W H Y H A SN 'T GOD LEARNED OUR LANGUAG E ? (continued) ing and witnessing among the Auca people. As the narrative unfolds, the open ing of each new field was attended by its own evidences of Divine working. Translators went into Guatemala in 1952 at the invitation of other mis sions and today collaborate with them, doing linguistic work in eight tribes. God’s leading was evident when Bolivia was entered in 1955, where a 1958 conference reported work in approximately twelve tribes. When the advance party went into Brazil in 1956, they found that al though approximately 70 tribes have become extinct since 1900, 186 tribes still roam the jungles. By January 1959 translators had settled in twelve of these tribes. The Philippines became a proving ground for translators going to other parts of the Pacific area. In 1956 Wyc- Wycliffe Translator Muriel Perkins with Terena Indian in Brazil. liffe entered tribal work in New Guinea. Within two years after the first group arrived, ten tribes were occupied. Later when Dr. Pittman made trips to Viet Nam and Indo nesia, a letter of introduction from President Magsaysay to his personal friend President Diem of Viet Nam proved invaluable. In 1958 the first contingent of translators, two couples, entered Viet Nam. By the end of a year Dick Pittman and sixteen new recruits had joined them. These young people are a dedicated army of Christian soldiers advancing into some of earth’s most treacherous places. They can only advance as they are backed by the prayers of God’s people. God will open the doors to the tribes only as His people pray. There are an estimated 2,000 tribes still asking. “Why hasn’t God learned our language?”—still crying in their souls for Him. W ill enough who are able — young, strong, trained — hear that cry? W ill they be obedient to God’s call—so that those in the for gotten places of earth may have Life through His Name? The book leaves one with the feeling that the task is not impossible.
