LLM in Professional Legal Practice

The LLM Professional Legal Practice is a course for law graduates and those who hold a Graduate Diploma in Law. It is designed for those looking to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination 1 and 2 (SQE1&2). The LLM is a practical course which focuses on developing the knowledge and skills required to complete the SQE and for success in legal practice. The LLM can be studied on a full-time basis over the course of one year, or on a part-time basis over two years.

LLM in Law and Legal Practice

The LLM Law and Legal Practice is a conversion course designed for non-law graduates looking to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination 1 (SQE1). The LLM can be studied on a full-time basis over eighteen months. It covers the foundations of law, core practice areas and skills required for the SQE1 assessments within a master’s level qualification that will be recognised and valued by prospective employers.

LLM in Legal Practice and Advanced Drafting

The LLM in Legal Practice and Advanced Drafting combines our Legal Practice Course (LPC) with an independent learning module, to enhance your legal skills and give you a valuable master’s level qualification. The LLM is a course for law graduates and those who hold a Graduate Diploma in Law. The LLM is a practical course, taught entirely by experienced solicitors and barristers, which focuses on developing the knowledge and skills required to be a successful trainee solicitor. The LLM can be studied on a full-time basis over the course of one year, or on a part-time basis over two years.

Legal Practice Course (LPC)

The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is a course for law graduates and those who hold a Graduate Diploma in Law. It is an essential step on the route to qualification as a solicitor in England & Wales for those who are looking to do so via a training contract. The LPC is a practical course, taught entirely by experienced solicitors and barristers, which focuses on developing the knowledge and skills required to be a successful trainee solicitor. The LPC can be studied on a full-time basis over the course of one year, or on a part-time basis over two years.

EXAMPLE TIMETABLE

The same learning strategy is implemented for all the professional legal courses; students gain legal expertise and practical experience to develop the knowledge and skills expected in the legal profession. Weekly hour-long large group sessions are an introduction to essential legal topics. Students then have the opportunity to explore these topics in practical exercises during the linked weekly 2-hour small group sessions (SGSs). SGSs are on-campus in-person sessions providing students with the opportunity to work through exercises which are complex and transactional in nature, and will develop progressively week-on-week to replicate the experience of developing a case in practice. For students following our professional legal courses with the aim of successfully completing the SQE, additional support and materials will be provided to enable students to go on to navigate external assessments.

CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY You’ll benefit from having access to our dedicated Employability and Placements Team, who offer support tailored to your personal requirements. From CV help to interview preparation, and assistance with organising events to put you in touch with key employers, the team offer an array of assistance that’ll help progress your career, which is available for up to 5 years after you graduate. You can also take part in our Placements Scheme, which enables you to gain invaluable experience with local employers. Bursaries are available to those who would benefit from financial assistance when undertaking their placement. We also have a flourishing graduate community, which is facilitated on our Swansea Connect platform. This welcoming community fosters the development of professional and personal contacts, and will allow you to keep up-to-date with employment opportunities after you graduate.

FACILITIES As a student at the School of Law, you’ll have access to a range of sector-leading facilities, across our Richard Price and Digital Technium buildings, which have both recently been refurbished to a high standard. TEACHING ROOMS Each of our teaching rooms are fitted with the latest in teaching technology, to include 70-inch touch screens, and lecture capture technology, allowing you you to revisit any of your lectures online at any point. MOOT COURT We have an authentic court room on site, filled with genuine court room furniture. This space is used for skills-based teaching, such as advocacy, and is also used for our mooting competitions, in which our students have enjoyed international success. LAW CLINIC The Digital Technium Building houses our award-winning Law Clinic, which provides opportunities for our students to volunteer and work with real-life clients on a variety of projects. The purpose-built space includes a reception area, client interview rooms, student collaboration spaces and staff offices. There is also a large space where our partners can collaborate in an informal, creative environment. STUDENT SOCIAL AND STUDY SPACE Both buildings have a range of open-plan spaces that can be used by our students to relax and socialise between lectures or for some quiet study time. Multiple electrical sockets and ports, together with WiFi throughout the buildings, aid access to digital resources.

CENTRE FOR PROFESSIONAL LEGAL PRACTICE The focus of the Centre is to ensure those who have decided to enter the legal profession as Solicitors continue to be educated and supported in a centre of excellence. The programmes for law and non-law graduates are built upon a well-established foundation of teaching aspiring solicitors for over 20 years. The Centre will continue to deliver well-established, student-centred education with the aim of supporting any student in achieving their goals in the legal profession.The experienced teaching team are all practising / non-practising lawyers with an extensive knowledge of teaching the solicitors of tomorrow. Developed from a network of connections to legal practice, the Centre’s work placement programme and employability events provide a launchpad for each student to maximise every employability opportunity both as current students and as alumni.

STUDENT SUPPORT

All of our students are supported throughout their studies by our Student Information Office, who are on hand to answer all academic and personal queries, either in-person or using digital channels. Private rooms are made available to facilitate confidential conversations.

Each student is also designated a Personal Tutor, with regular meetings organised to answer any detailed queries you may have, or to offer personal support and guidance on reaching your goals.

As a student of Swansea University, you will also be eligible for wider support across the university. This includes a host of financial, personal and welfare support on our MyUni platform, as well as access to social and academic events.

To support your studies, you can also access the Canvas Hub, which includes key learning resources, support, student events and announcements.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE The School has a varied calendar of social events and activities ongoing throughout the academic year. The Student Experience and Engagement Team works with the Students’ Union to arrange bespoke events for our students. Societies are a vital part of your student experience and joining a club or society is a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends. It can also give you valuable transferable skills for gaining future employment. Swansea University has over 150 societies, so there is plenty for you to choose from, including the student-run Law Society and Bar Society.

My experience at Swansea was second to none. I was fortunate to be a part of the work placement scheme and thoroughly recommend it. The teaching and support staff are incredible and I thank them for all their help and encouragement.

BURSARIES

WELSH PROVISION Students are able to submit assessed work (examinations and written skills) and sit live assessments in Welsh. Students studying any of the LLM professional legal programmes are able to undertake the drafting module entirely through the medium of Welsh and scholarships may be awarded for students who wish to do so. The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol will be able to provide more information on any scholarships which may be available.

There are a selection of bursaries available to both full-time and part-time students as follows.

Full time: • Swansea University LLB graduates: £2,000 • Alumni of a Welsh university: £1,500 • Swansea University GDL graduates: £2,000 Part time: • The same bursaries are available to part-time students, but 50% is paid in year 1 and 50% in year 2 STUDENT FINANCE Our 3 professional LLM programmes are eligible for postgraduate taught loans through Student Finance in England and Wales, depending on your home address.
