ON-CAMPUS SAMPLE SCHEDULE
BIOENGINEERING FOR GIRLS Focus Programs feature a rotating mix of on-campus work and field visits. Speakers and trips are subject to change year-to-year. Here’s an example of what a typical day spent on-campus could look like.
LAB: HEART FUNCTION + MEDITATION Work alongside Professor Laura Ekstrom to develop a hypothesis of the relationship between heart function and meditation, then test your hypothesis using EKG and a blood oximeter to calculate the pulse wave velocity (PWV) of blood traveling from your heart to your finger.
GUEST SPEAKER: MEENA SUBRAMANYAM, PH.D. Vice President and Global Program Leader in Gastroenterology Division at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Meena Subramanyam shares her work as a leader in therapeutic drug development over 20 years in the biotechnology industry. MAKERSPACE: PROTOTYPE A PROSTHETIC Begin to design, prototype, and test a prosthetic solution for hand function in the Wheaton College Makerspace. Hone your skills on the laser cutters, 3D printers, power tools, and more alongside Jessica Artiles — a designer, maker, and mentor who holds multiple degrees in engineering and technology from MIT. This is only the first of a number of times you’ll find yourself in the Makerspace.
THE ART OF NETWORKING Pitching your research and connecting with professionals can be as critical to your career trajectory as the lab work and solutions you develop. Practice your networking skills with industry professionals at an event designed specifically for Bioengineering for Girls participants.
YOUR CHOICE Unwind your day with an on-campus movie, s’mores at the Wheaton fire pit, a consult with your advisor, or badminton on the Quad. (Activities vary daily.)
