CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT JAMES R. LYDA Chief Master Sergeant James R. Lyda is the Command Chief Master Sergeant, 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. He is the principle advisor to the Wing Commander and staff on mission effectiveness, professional development, military readiness, training, utilization, health, morale, and welfare of the command’s 3,900 enlisted Airmen. Chief Lyda provides strategic leadership and direction for the Total Force supporting and performing global combat operations helping to sustain America’s deterrence capabilities. Additionally, he maintains host installation support for 6,000 tenet unit and family members including an Air Force Reserve wing, Missouri Air National Guard Bomb Wing, a reconnaissance squadron and a Missouri Army National Guard battalion. He supports flying assets in excess of $46 billion and a $147 million operations and maintenance budget. Chief Lyda entered the Air Force in July 1991. His background includes various air traffic and leadership positions at the squadron, group, and major-command levels. Throughout his career, he has filled a multitude of roles including Superintendent of a Combat Plans Division and the first-ever
Superintendent of Air Traffic Control at Spangdahlem AB, Germany. His assignments include bases in North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Virginia and Missouri. He has also served overseas in Germany and South Korea. Additionally, Chief Lyda has deployed to Al Udied AB, Qatar and Balad AB, Iraq in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.
