drive groundbreaking scientic discoveries and medical breakthroughs. “Events like the Scripps Clinic Golf Invitational raise critical funds to provide our physician scientists the means to catapult their research forward,” says James Mason, MD, hematologist and oncologist, Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center and Scripps Clinic. “Philanthropic contributions help us hone new techniques, develop drug therapies and advance patient care.” Research conducted at Scripps—roughly 100 projects per year—also helps attract top doctors and train the next generation of health care professionals through its graduate medical education, says Gary Williams, MD, chairman, Department of Medicine, Scripps Clinic. Recent research eorts have included work to better understand and treat COVID-19, to determine factors that inuence a patient’s response to transplantation, and gastroenterological studies on Crohn’s disease and inammatory bowel disease. Other studies have delved into how T-cells can be used to treat cancer, the results of implanted cardiac monitoring devices, whether articial intelligence can glean more information from EKGs, and developing an articial cartilage that may make joint replacement surgery unnecessary. “People should know that the money they're donating is making a dierence in the lives of patients now and in the future,” says Dr. Williams.
THE SCRIPPS INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT IS RETURNING THIS FALL. It's the rst in-person, outdoor event for Scripps supporters to enjoy on September 10. About 140 golfers are expected to tee o on the South Course at Torrey Pines, the site of the most recent U.S. Open, to benet research and innovation at Scripps Clinic. “is is the opportunity to enjoy the course and also do something for a really good cause,” says Hugh Greenway, MD, chair of the Bighorn Mohs Surgery and Dermatology Center at Scripps Clinic and program director for cutaneous oncology at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center. “One of the other great things about this tournament is that we have two scoring formats. It's set up in such a way that you can be a serious golfer or a fun golfer and still have a great time.” A lively awards reception featuring sweeping ocean views, elegant cuisine, cocktails and live entertainment by a steel drum band will follow the tournament. ose who don’t wish to attend but would still like to show their support can participate in the wine vault opportunity drawing; a virtual auction for experiences such as a week stay at a Lake Tahoe cabin, a private dinner for eight by a prominent chef and a concierge medical membership; or with a donation to directly support research and innovation through the online fund-a-need.
