والفرنسية واإليطالية واأللمانية. كانت مهتمة بالثقافات والبلدان، وسـافرت إلـى جـزر الهنـد الغربيـة وإفريقيـا، وكانـت تمتلـك نظـرة معينة ذات حس فني. كانت مارغريت قادرة على إيالء االهتمام لألشـياء والمسـاحات بينهـا، األمـر الـذي أزهر أفـكارا ورؤى. كنـا مهتميـن دائمـا بالنـاس. كانـت نصائـح مارغريـت بسـيطة لكنهـا مثاليـة بـكل مـا فـي الكلمـة مـن معنى، فقد اقترحـت علي أن أكتب هـذا الكتـاب إلرضـاء نفسـي أوالً، وألننـي سـأجد مـن خـالل كتابتـه ما إذا كان االقتراح صحيحا أم ال. األمر أشبه بلوحة، كالنا رسّامٌ، والرسـام عـادة مـا يجهـل كيـف سـتبدو لوحتـه إلـى أن ينتهـي منها. وجـاءت تجربتنـا مماثلـة مـع كتابـة هـذا الكتاب. موضـوع الكتـاب نفسـه لـم يكـن سـهال مـن حيـث تمثّــل مجموعـة أشــخاص تعتــرف بهــم الجمعيــة الجغرافيــة الملكيــة فــي جميــع القــارات والمحيطــات والبحــار. أردت أن أظهــر الفــرق بيــن رســم مشـهد مـا حـدث قبـل وصولهـم إلـى مـكان معيـن، ومـن ثـم الكتابـة عــن األفــراد وإنجازاتهــم. لقــد كان ذلــك تحديــا حقيقيــا وتجربــة مثيــرة للغايــة. ، وقيــود اإلغــالق، 19- وبعــد ذلــك، بالطبــع، جــاءت جائحــة كوفيــد ولـم أتمكـن مـن اسـتخدام مكتبـة الجمعيـة الملكيـة الجغرافيـة أو أي مكتبـة أخـرى، لكننـي كنـت محظوظـا جـدا بمكتبتـي الخاصـة.

A traveller’ travels for astonishment, for the joy of widening his or her horizons and to acquire knowledge about the place, whereas ‘an explorer’ has an objective in mind.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS
It took some time to complete “Exploring the World”, which took place during the Covid-19 Pandemic – how did you manage to put in such an amazing body of work during a lockdown? I owe everything that is in this book to my wife Margaret, who sadly died four years ago, and we have spent 50 years together. She was immensely gifted and spoke apart from English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German. She was interested in cultures and countries, travelled to West Indies and Africa, had a certain eye for an artistic sense. Margaret was able to pay attention to objects as well as spaces in between objects, which translated itself into ideas. We were both always interested in people. Margaret’s advice was prosaic in a way, but perfect in every sense, she suggested that I write this book to please myself and that I will find through the process of doing it whether it is right or not. It is a little bit like with a painting – we both painted, and, in a way, you never know what kind of painting you are going to create until it is finished, and it was a similar experience with writing this book.

يسافر “الرحالة” من أجل الدهشة، من أجل االستمتاع بتوسيع آفاقه واكتساب المعرفة حول المكان، في حين أن “المستكشف” لديه هدف محدّد في ذهنه .
