Freya Stark, and Wilfred Thesiger, I knew Wilfred, better than anybody. Together with Margret, we were interested in people, and especially those who travelled enhanced our lives immensely. I learned that all explorers had a great deal of personal courage, strength, integrity, and quiet determination. They also had a deep and enduring faith, it might have been Christianity, Buddhism, or Islam. Thank you very much indeed Alex for your trust and for allowing me to share such profound words and reflections with a wider audience. Many congratulations on “Exploring the World” - Two Centuries of Remarkable Adventures and Their Journeys. What is your message to the reader and in particular the younger generations, and the explorers of the future? In the context of the book, we were speaking about terrestrial explorations, but there could be extra-terrestrial explorations too. Whatever one would wish to explore whether it is art, music, architecture, deep diving, or mountaineering, I would say, if possible: ‘listen to your head and follow your heart, if your passion becomes your life and if your life can become a passion, then you are achieving something’. ‘Give it everything, all or nothing’. .

فباســتثناء إندونيســيا والقطــب الشــمالي وأســتراليا، كنــت قــادرا علـى العثـور علـى المـواد التـي أحتاجهـا بيـن الكتـب والمحفوظـات الموجـودة لـدي فـي المنـزل. تهانينـا الحـارة. هـال أخبرتنـا المزيـد عـن نمـوك الذاتـي وعـن االكتشـافات التـي حققتهـا عنـد كتابـة “استكشـاف العالـم”؟ شــخصيا قلّمــا ســافرت. لكنّنــي كنــت محظوظــا للغايــة وبشــكل اسـتثنائي ألننـي التقيـت بمستكشـفين مثـل أعضـاء بعثـة إفرسـت ، الســير روبــرت إريــك مورتيمــر ويلــر، عالــم اآلثــار 1953 للعــام البريطانــي، إريــك نيوبــي، وغافيــن ديفيــد يونــغ، وفريــا ســتارك، وولفريــد ثيســجر. كنــت أعــرف ولفريــد أفضــل مــن أي شــخص آخـر. وكنّــا، أنـا ومارغريـت، مهتميـن بالنـاس، وخاصـة أولئك الذين ســافروا، وأضفــوا جمــاال كبيــرا علــى حياتنــا. تعلمــت أن جميــع المستكشــفين لديهــم قــدر كبيــر مــن الشــجاعة الشـخصية والقـوة والنزاهـة والتصميـم الهـادئ. كان لديهـم أيضـا إيمان عميق ودائم، سواء أكان بالمسيحية أو البوذية أو اإلسالم. شــكرا جزيــال لــك أليكــس علــى ثقتــك، وعلــى الســماح لــي بمشـاركة مثـل هـذه الكلمـات والتأمـالت العميقـة مـع جمهـور أوسـع. وتهانينـا مـرة أخـرى علـى كتـاب “استكشـاف العالـم: قرنـان مـن المغامـرات الرائعـة ورحالتهـا”. مـا هـي رسـالتك للقــارئ وخاصــة األجيــال الشــابة ومستكشــفي المســتقبل؟ فــي ســياق الكتــاب كنــا نتحــدث عــن االستكشــافات فــي كوكبنــا، لكـن قـد تكـون هنـاك استكشـافات خارج األرض أيضـاً. وأيا كان ما يرغب المرء في استكشـافه، سـواء أكان فنا أو موسـيقا أو عمارة أو غوصــا فــي أعمــاق البحــار أو تســلقا للجبــال، أود أن أقــول، إن أمكـن: “أصـغ إلـى عقلـك واتبـع قلبـك، إذا كان شـغفك هـو حياتـك، وإذا كان يمكن أن تصبح حياتك شغفاً، فأنت تحقق شيئا عظيماً. . امنحـه كل شـيء، فإمـا كل شـيء أو ال شـيء”.

The subject of the book itself was not easy in the sense of representing a diverse range of people recognised by the Royal Geographical Society on all continents, oceans, and seas. I wanted to show the difference between setting out a scene on what happened before they have come to a certain place and then writing about individuals and their achievements. It was quite a game to do it. And then, of course, the Covid-19 pandemic happened, lockdown, and I was not able to use the RGS library or any other libraries, but I was very lucky to have my own library and except for Indonesia, Artic, and Australia, I was able to find the material I needed amongst books and archives I have at home. Congratulations, tell me more about your personal growth and discoveries you have made when writing ‘Exploring the World’? I hardly travelled myself, but I had the exceptionally good fortune and great luck to meet explorers such as the members of the 1953 Everest Expedition, Sir Robert Eric Mortimer Wheeler a British archaeologist, Eric Newby, Gavin David Young,
