ما نوع الورق الذي استخدمته؟ إنـه ورق فاخـر وخـاص للغايـة مـن عالمـة تجاريـة فرنسـية، يُصنـع ”. ال أعــرف دواعــي Ingres d’Arches فــي وســط فرنســا باســم “ استخدامه باألصل، لكنه مناسب جدا لأللوان المائية. ما يعجبني فـي الورقـة أنهـا تتفاعـل بنفـس الطريقـة التـي يتفاعـل بهـا الـورق اليابانــي. بمجــرد أن تبلّلهــا وتجــف، فإنهــا ال تمتــدّ، بــل تتقلّــص، لـذا فهـي تسـهم فـي تماسـك األشـياء معـا وتبـدو مسـطّحة، علـى عكـس الـورق اآلخـر الـذي يبـدو متذبذبـا للغايـة عندمـا ترسـم عليه ثــم يصبــح غيــر عالــق. تصفّحــت أنــواع ورق كثيــرة قبــل أن أجــد هـذا النـوع تحديـداً. لقـد قمـت بتحويـل الـورق من شـيء ثنائي األبعـاد إلى ثالثي األبعاد... نعــم، لكننــي لــم أصنــع الهيــاكل المعدنيــة بنفســي. بنــاء علــى رســوماتي، تولّــت إحــدى الشــركات تنفيــذ اإلطــارات المعدنيــة ووضعــت المصابيــح الكهربائيــة بالداخــل. فأصبحــت السلســلة بأكملهــا مضيئــةً. ما هي الوسيلة التي استخدمتها لتلوين الفوانيس؟ استخدمت حبرا من األلوان المائية أقوم بشرائه عادة من المتاجر المختصة باللوازم الفنية. اللون قوي جداً، وحصل معي تماما كما جـرى فـي سـياق البحـث عـن الـورق، اسـتغرق األمـر بعـض الوقـت للعثـور علـى الحبـر الصحيـح والـورق الصحيـح، ولكـن بمجـرد أن وجدت النوع المناسـب، اسـتكملت العمل عليه. كيف اخترت ألوان الفوانيس؟ كان مـن الواضـح أننـي أردت العمـل حـول درجـات اللـون البرتقالي ألنــه لــون هيرمــس، وأنــا أيضــا أحــب األلــوان بشــكل عــام. كنــت أرغـب فـي تنفيـذ ألـوان باهتـة ولهـذا السـبب بـدال من صنع سلسـلة
برتقالية بسـيطة، حققت تالشـي األلوان من البرتقالي إلى األصفر مـع بعـض الدرجـات الورديـة وحتـى األرجوانية. لقد أجريت بعض االختبــارات حــول كيفيــة امتصــاص الــورق لأللــوان المائيــة، وأنــا أحــب هــذا النــوع مــن التأثيــر الغائــم والطريقــة التــي تندمــج بهــا األلـوان معـاً. احتفظنـا كذلـك بنفـس درجات ألوان روابط السلسـلة خـارج المتجـر فـي المركـز التجـاري، والتـي صمّمناهـا انطالقـا مـن القمـاش بـدال مـن الـورق، علـى الرغم من أننـي أردت العمل بالورق، ولكن كان من الصعب جدا العثور على كمية الورق التي نحتاجها والعمّــال الذيـن يتمتعـون بمهـارات العمـل علـى األلـوان المائيـة. القــارب مســتوحى مــن ســفينة الســفّار التقليديــة مــن اإلمــارات العربيــة المتحــدة، لذلــك احتفظــت برمــوز األلــوان الخاصــة بهــذا القـارب. تنفّــذ هـذه السـفن عـادة انطالقـا مـن الخشـب، لذلـك يكون القـاع باللـون البنـي، ويبقـى مشـابها قدر اإلمـكان للنموذج األصلي. كمــا تالعبــت باأللــوان لجعلهــا تبــدو كمــا لــو أننــا نراهــا مــن تحــت المـاء، لذلـك بالطبـع فـإن قـاع القـارب يكـون أغمـق قليـال فيما يبدو القسـم العلـوي مـن القـارب باللـون األبيـض. تزيّن واجهة المتجر أيضا بأسماك فرس البحر؟ في الواقع، هي نصف فرس البحر ألن الرأس الخشبي هو لحصان هيرمــس ســمرقند، ألنّنــي أردت اســتخدام الحصــان بطريقــة مــا، لكننـي قـررت بالفعـل أننـي أريـد أن أجعلـه كمـا لـو كان تحـت البحـر مــع رمــز شــين دانكــر، لذلــك أصبــح واضحــا أنــه يجــب أن يكــون فــرس البحــر. فكــرت، “دعونــا نجعلــه مزيجــا مــن فانــوس ورقــي ملـون أصنعـه هـذا هـو الذيـل، وهـذا الغرض مـن هيرمس يكون هو الـرأس الخشـبي”. كمـا زينـت أسـفل الواجهـة بأصـداف بحرية، من الجانبيـن األيسـر واأليمـن. يحتـوي بعضها علـى لؤلؤة مثل المحار، بينمـا لألصـداف األخـرى وسـادة يعلوهـا سـوار.
What kind of paper did you use? It’s a very specific prestigious paper from a French brand made in the middle of France called “Ingres d’Arches”. I don’t know what people use it for, but it’s very good for watercolour. What I like about the paper is it reacts in the same way as Japanese paper. Once you wet it and it dries, it doesn’t stretch, but shrinks, so it holds things together and looks flat, unlike other paper that looks very wobbly when you paint on it and then becomes unstuck. I looked through a lot of paper before I found this one. You turned paper from something two-dimensional to three-dimensional… Yes, but I didn’t make the metal structures myself. Based on my drawings, a company made the metal frames and put the light bulbs inside. The whole chain is illuminated. What medium did you use to colour the lanterns? This is watercolour ink that I buy in art supply shops. The colour is quite strong, it was the same as my paper research; it took some time to find the right ink and the right paper, but once I found them, then I continued with them. How did you choose the colours of the lanterns? It was obvious that I wanted to work around orange tones because it’s the colour of Hermès, and I also love colours in general. I wanted to do some fadings and that’s why instead of making just a simple plain orange chain, I made a fading from orange to yellow with some pink and even purple tones.

I did some tests of how the watercolours are absorbed by the paper, and I love this kind of cloudy effect and the way they merge together. We also kept the same tones for the colours of the chain links outside the store in the mall, which were made in fabric instead of paper, although I wanted to work with paper, but it was too difficult to find the amount of paper we needed and skilled workers who knew about watercolour. The boat is inspired by the traditional Saffar vessel from the UAE, so I kept the colour codes of this boat. Usually they are in wood, so the bottom is in brown, and it stays as similar as possible to the original model. Also, I played with the colours to make it look as if we see it from under the water, so of course the bottom of the boat is a bit darker and the top of the boat is white. You’re putting seahorses in the window display as well? Actually, they are half seahorses because the wooden head is the Hermès Samarcande, as I wanted to use the horse somehow, but I had already decided I wanted to make it as if it’s under the sea with the Chaîne d’Ancre, so it became obvious that it should be a seahorse. I thought, “Let’s make it a combination of a painted paper lantern that I make that’s the tail and this Hermès object that’s a wooden head.” There are seashells at the bottom of the window, on the left and the right. Some have a pearl like an oyster, while others have a cushion with a bracelet on top.
