The selected yachts must have been built before 1939 or be extremely faithful replicas of such yachts and the minimum size to enter is 10 meters length at the waterline. Amongst them, boats designed by William Fife will be part of the line-up, including the Moonbeam IV , one of the few large classic gaff cutters still sailing. Designed by the renowned William Fife III, it was the last and the biggest of the “Moonbeams” to be built. It is today considered as one of the most beautiful classic yachts in the world, not just for its exterior but also for its luxurious details. Winner of the prestigious British King’s Cup in 1920 and 1923, it will sail alongside other Fife beauties like Mariquita, Moonbeam 3, Altair, Tuiga and The Lady Anne, as well as other classic yachts including Mariette, Atlantic, Kelpie and Thalia. It will not only be the yachts that will be wowing the crowds. The trophy for the winning vessel is so opulent that it may even steal the show. Standing at a metre high and commissioned, from Garrard, who are jewellers to the British Royal Family, the sterling silver monumental sculptural trophy was inspired by the elegance of the yachts. With several planed elements, made to resemble the patterns of sails at sea, the trophy is also a perpetual award, meaning that each winner will receive a smaller replica to keep. Garrad’s have a long history of designing sports trophies such as the first America’s Cup 170 years ago. Commenting on the symbolism and size of the trophy itself in the context of the race, Richard Mille said that it shows the “level of involvement and intent that our brand has in this cup. It is an experience we wish to renew every year and we are committed to the long term. For now, we do not have a watch to celebrate this event but no doubt, in time we will also add that to our collection.” .
in Falmouth, in Cornwall on June 10, participants will be offered three days of coastal regattas by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. On 14 June, they will set sail for Dartmouth, where the Royal Dart Yacht Club has been an institution since 1866. On 16 June, they will set sail for Cowes and be joined by the mythical Royal Yacht Squadron which has ruled the world of yachting for over 200 years. The last stage will be at Le Havre in France and its deep-water port, where the Société des Régates du Havre [SRH], oldest sailing club in France created in 1838, will welcome the sailors. “It is our intention to get back to the origins of the sport and to do so in authentic conditions upon rough seas and in traditional vessels,” said Richard Mille. “I have always ensured that the brand takes an original approach to all our endeavours and enter different universes whether that be sports, lifestyle or art. In sports, in particular, we are aggressive in the way we enter.” The event was created from a desire to create a challenging sporting event but in a classical vein. Richard Mille is already associated with classic car racing such as Le Mans Classic and this unique sailing race will present an opportunity for the most beautiful classic yachts and their owners to express themselves on the seas. The selection criteria are along the similar strict lines as an automotive elegance competition.
