Horology aficionados might choose a Tank Normale timepiece in yellow gold or platinum, with a 70s-inspired satin and polished finish and a bracelet made of the same materials as the case. Alternatively, it’s possible to acquire an even more radically reinvented version of the Tank that comes with a skeleton movement and a 24-hour complication marked by a sun and crescent moon. While the minute hand turns around the dial in one hour, the hour hand completes a cycle in 24 hours instead of 12 hours. As a result, daytime hours appear on the upper part of the dial, which has a lighter, golden appearance. The lower part, where the night-time hours are marked, has a darker tone. It’s possible for a lucky few collectors to purchase a version of this timepiece in yellow gold on a brown and green alligator strap with a blue sapphire cabochon on the winding crown and in platinum on a burgundy and grey alligator strap with a ruby cabochon. A version set with brilliant-cut diamonds completes the ensemble, in a limited edition of 20 numbered pieces, featuring an alligator strap in two shades of blue with a brilliant-cut diamond on the winding crown. There are many other features that are nods to the original Tank, such as hands that are vivid shade of sapphire blue. The Santos-Dumont is another Cartier watch with an even longer history. I t was a record year for visitors at this year’s Watches and Wonders horology event in Geneva this spring, and the Parisian jewellery house Cartier unveiled one of the most anticipated new collections. While the timepieces on display varied in style, with references as disparate as aviation and punk music, there was a theme loosely linking them: the idea that time moves forward in a spiral rather than a line. By reimagining the great inventions of the past, it’s possible to continually evolve into the future, and Cartier has a storied history to delve into for design inspiration. World War I tanks are part of the design heritage of the classic Cartier Tank, a masculine watch launched by Louis Cartier himself in 1919, which has been reimagined several times since then. One such reimagining is the Tank Normale: this years choice for the Cartier Privé collection, which is reserved for only the most exclusive, historic models that are coveted by collectors. The Normale borrows many of iconic features of the classic Tank, such as the beveled sapphire crystal in the same shape as the original glass crystal, the Roman numeral dial with inner railroad tracks, the 1917 date hidden in the VII numeral, and the satin-brushed case.
