the early 1970s. Together, these farms produce about 156,000 tonnes of vegetables and 200,000 tonnes of fruit annually, according to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment [MOCCAE]. This output is impressive for a desert country that only receives between 140 and 200 millimetres of rainfall per year, based on World Bank data. The progress made so far is also in line with the national food security strategy, which aims to increase domestic production so that half the food consumed in the UAE is produced locally by 2051, compared to 20 per cent today. Directly supporting this strategy is the Agriculture Innovation Mission [AIM] for Climate, a joint endeavour by the United States and the UAE that is working to increase investment in climate-smart agriculture and food systems over the period between 2021 and 2025. As expected, the economy is considerably benefitting from the sector’s progress. In 2021, agriculture contributed AED 15.3 billion to the UAE’s GDP and this contribution is expected to increase by 28 per cent by 2025 to reach AED 19.3 billion, according to HE Rashed Abdulkareem Al Blooshi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development.

آالف مزرعــة فــي مطلــع 4 مــا يمثــل زيــادة اســتثنائية مــن نحــو 156 سـبعينيات القـرن الماضـي. تنتـج هـذه المـزارع مجتمعـة نحو ألـف طـن مـن الفواكه سـنويا وفقا 200 ألـف طـن مـن الخضـروات و لـوزارة التغيـر المناخـي والبيئـة. وهـذه الحصيلـة مثيـرة لاهتمـام فـي بلـد صحـراوي يتـراوح المعـدل السـنوي لهطـول األمطـار فيـه ميليمتـر بحسـب بيانـات البنـك الدولـي. 200 و 140 بيـن ينسـجم التقـدم الـذي أُحـرز حتـى اآلن مـع االسـتراتيجية الوطنيـة لألمن الغذائي التي تهدف إلى زيادة اإلنتاج المحلي بحيث يغطي مقارنــة 2051 نصــف الغــذاء المســتهلك فــي الدولــة بحلــول العــام بعشـرين بالمئـة حاليـاً. وتحظـى هـذه االسـتراتيجية بدعـم مباشـر مــن “مبــادرة االبتــكار الزراعــي للمنــاخ”، وهــي مبــادرة مشــتركة بيــن الواليــات المتحــدة واإلمــارات، تعمــل علــى زيــادة االســتثمار فــي الزراعــة الذكيّــة مناخيــا وأنظمــة الغــذاء مــا بيــن العاميــن .2025 و 2021 كمـا هـو متوقـع، فاالقتصـاد يجنـي فوائـد جمّــة مـن تقـدم القطـاع. مليـار درهـم فـي الناتـج 15.3 بــ 2021 فقـد سـاهمت الزراعـة فـي المحلي اإلجمالي للدولة. ومن المنتظر أن تزداد مساهمتها بنسبة مليـار درهـم وفقا لراشـد 19.3 لتبلـغ 2025 بالمئـة بحلـول العـام 28 عبـد الكريـم البلوشـي، وكيـل دائـرة التنمية االقتصاديـة - أبوظبي. أثمرت هذه الجهود الجماعية عن تبوؤ اإلمارات العربية المتحدة المرتبـة األولـى فـي منطقـة الشـرق األوسـط وشـمال إفريقيـا فـي قياسـا بالمرتبـة الثالثـة عـام 2022 مؤشـر األمـن الغذائـي العالمـي . وحققــت المرتبــة الثالثــة والعشــرين علــى مســتوى العالــم 2021 نقطـة عـن العـام السـابق. ومـع أن ذلـك 12 مسـجلة تحسـنا مقـداره يُعد تقدما ملحوظاً، غير أن جعبة اإلمارات حافلة بخطط طموحة .2051 لتبـوء صـدارة هـذا المؤشـر بحلـول العـام بينمـا تلـوح فـي األفـق الـدورة السـنوية الثامنـة والعشـرين لمؤتمـر األطـراف فـي اتفاقيـة األمـم المتحـدة اإلطارية بشـأن تغيـر المناخ عام االستدامة في اإلمارات 2023 ، وفي ضوء اعتبار عام COP28

F ood security has always been a focus of government attention in the UAE. As a water-scarce nation where less than one per cent of the land mass is arable, it’s not surprising that the UAE imports as much as 80 per cent of the food it consumes. Supply chain disruptions in the last couple of years coupled with wider geopolitical issues have only emphasised the urgency of having secure access to food.
