أطلقت شركتك االستشارية “فنتاستك”، منذ أكثر من عقد مـن الزمـان. هل غيـر ذلك طريقة عملك؟ فــي األعمــال المعماريــة قــد تصبــح ضحيــة لنجاحــك. إذا حققــت منجـزا جيـداً، فسـيعود العمـالء إليـك مـن أجـل ذلـك المنجـز، علمـا أن الهــدف األســاس للعمــارة هــو أال تقتصــر علــى نــوع واحــد مــن المباني. إذا نظرت إلى مستشـفيات السـبعينات والثمانينات مثالً، تراهـا مستشـفيات وظيفيّــة تمامـاً؛ مجـرّد مبـان لخدمـة المرضـى، فيهــا الســتائر مغلقــة دائمــاً، والديكــورات الداخليــة قاتمــة للغايــة. أمـا فـي الوقـت الحاضـر فالمستشـفيات أشـبه بالمنتجعـات، فيهـا ردهة استقبال مشرقة، ويتدفق إلى فضاءاتها الكثير من الضوء. قـد تُطلـب منـا مشـروعات يريـدون تشـييدها بـذات الطريقـة، فـي حيـن يمكـن تجسـيدها بطـرق مختلفـة مـن خـالل تقنيـات جديـدة وبأفـكار جديـدة، وباتّبـاع طـرق وأسـاليب تنفيـذ جديـدة. إذ علينـا أن نتكيـف باسـتمرار مـع التغييـر. هل كانت هناك لحظات مهمة أخرى في مسيرتك المهنية؟ ظننـت بعـد دبـي مـول أننـي سـأظل أعمـل فـي مجـال مراكز التسـوق، لكن بعد ذلك بفترة وجيزة، تم تعييننا في مشروع مطار في أبوظبي حيـث كنـا مديـري التصميـم المشـرفين علـى جميـع عمليـات تجهيـز المسـاحات التجاريـة. كانـت تجربـة العمل مـع أصحاب المصلحة في
هل استمرت المساحة في التطور منذ أن تم بناؤها؟ عـدت إلـى هنـاك قبـل أسـبوعين والحظـت أنـه يتطـور باسـتمرار. كان أحد أجزاء المول عبارة عن موقف سـيارات متعدد الطوابق، ولكــن تــم تغييــر الغــرض منــه وتحويلــه إلــى قســم جديــد اســمه “تشـايناتاون”. يزور الكثير من السـياح الصينيين دبي مول اآلن، لذلــك فــإن المتاجــر توظــف موظفيــن يتحدثــون لغــة الماندريــن لخدمتهم. زاد في اآلونة األخيرة عدد السياح الناطقين بالروسية، وبالتالـي ظهـرت متاجـر وموظفون ناطقون بالروسـية. إنه يتطور باسـتمرار لتلبية تجربة العمالء، ألنه من المفهوم جيدا أن العميل السـعيد ينفـق المزيـد. إنــه ألمــر رائــع أن تكــون جــزءا مــن هــذه التجربــة ألنــك تتعلــم منها باستمرار. فيها تُستخدم المنصات الرقمية بشكل أكبر أيضاً. هنــاك مثــل يقــول “تســوق حتــى تســقط”. اآلن، يمكنــك التســوق ومـن ثـم توصيـل مشـترياتك إلـى غرفتـك بالفنـدق، لكـي تتمكـن مــن مواصلــة التجربــة. إذا كنــت ترغــب فــي الذهــاب فــي جولــة علــى األفعوانيــة، يمكننــا االحتفــاظ بأشــيائك أو توصيلهــا إلــى فندقــك. كمــا أن كل شــيء مرتبــط إلــى حــد كبيــر بالنقــل متعــدد الوسـائط هـذه األيـام؛ فهنـاك متـرو يصـل إلـى عتبـة بابكـم تقريبـا فــي كل مــكان، إلــى هــذا المــدى تقدمــت البــالد.

On any particular day, there could be 100,000 people on site: more than the size of an audience watching a football final at Wembley. Has the space continued to evolve since it was built? I returned there a couple of weeks ago and can see that it’s continually evolving. One part of the mall used to be a multi- storey car park, but it’s been repurposed and turned into a new Chinatown section for the mall. A lot of tourists from China are visiting Dubai Mall now, so shops are employing Mandarin-speaking staff to cater to them. Recently, there are also a lot of Russian-speaking tourists, and so Russian- speaking retailers and staff are also popping up. It’s constantly evolving to cater to the experience of the customers, because its well understood that a happy customer will spend more. It’s wonderful to be part of this experience because you’re constantly learning. Digital platforms are being used more too. We used to say “shop ’til you drop.” Now, you can shop
and then have your shopping delivered to your hotel room, and the experience can go on. If you want to go on a roller coaster ride, we can keep hold of your things or deliver them to your hotel. And also everything’s very connected with multimodal transportation these days; there is a train that arrives on your doorstep almost to everywhere, that’s how much the country has progressed You launched your consultancy, Funtastic, more than a decade ago. Did this change the way you worked? The architectural business is one whereby you can be a victim of your own success. If you do something very well, the clientele will keep coming back to you for that product. Whereas the whole purpose of architecture is that you don’t want to be stuck with one type of building. If you look at the hospitals of the ‘70s and ‘80s, for example, they are totally utilitarian; they are just there to serve the unwell, and the curtains were always drawn, and the interiors were quite gloomy. Nowadays hospitals are like resorts, with a welcoming lobby, lots of light coming into the space. While we may be approached
