QUALITY ACADEMY Creating Quality Improvement Leaders Across the System

NYC Health + Hospitals Application for Quality Academy 2023 – 2024 Cohort

OVERVIEW OF QUALITY ACADEMY Quality Academy is a voluntary training program that gives clinical and non-clinical staff the knowledge, skills, and tools to lead quality improvement within their units and settings. The goal of Quality Academy is to help develop emerging leaders in quality improvement across NYC Health + Hospitals. Quality Academy provides participants with a six-month training program that has three main components: (1) Participants will learn the fundamentals of quality, how to initiate and lead a team-based performance improvement project, and how to use tools and data to overcome challenges and improve care/experience through eight in-person teaching sessions, over six months. (2) Participants will lead a performance improvement project in their work setting/unit to get hands- on experience applying the concepts and skills learned in the teaching sessions. Participants will receive one-on-one mentoring for their project throughout the program. (3) Participants will complete pre-session teaching assignments and homework to support their learning. In addition to the teaching sessions and leading a hands-on project that is mentored, participants will have the opportunity to network with colleagues from across the system, receive leadership training, and obtain access to expert faculty and colleagues in quality improvement. Most importantly, they will learn how to become more effective change agents, knowing not just how to spot issues in the health care setting, but also how to use quality improvement tools and techniques, as well as data and an equity lens, in efforts to improve care. Quality Academy Curriculum Quality Academy aims to provide participants with the following knowledge and skills:

• Fundamentals of quality, performance improvement and AIM statements • Quality tools, change management strategies and interdisciplinary teams • Overcoming barriers and planning, designing and engaging in quality • Using data in quality • Introduction to Root Cause Analysis • Sustaining improvements • Presenting performance improvement projects Performance Improvement Project

The participant-led performance improvement project will enable participants to apply the concepts, skills, and knowledge gained through the Quality Academy teaching sessions with support from an assigned mentor. Quality Academy Eligibility Criteria Quality Academy is open to all NYC Health + Hospitals staff interested in developing their leadership skills in quality.
