DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA AWARD LELA FOLKERS
Lela Folkers was born and raised in Reedley, graduating from Reedley High School and Reedley College. She got a BA in Education from Fresno State and earned a California teaching credential. After a spiritual awakening, she dedicated herself to a life of serving others. Her journey started in India, where she taught at an international boarding school. Later, she returned to work in Nepal and decided to further her professional life by earning a Master's Degree in Public Health. Lela spent the rest of her forty-year career in public health, which provided opportunities to work in California, with the World Health Organization in the South Pacific, and at the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She returned to California, retiring from California’s Department of Public Health. After her retirement, she continued to travel and volunteer her services. Her vision loss made it necessary for her to move to the retirement community where she currently resides.
