Entrepreneurs At CalBox Invest In Equipment, People BY DAN BRUNTON Although the age-old adage suggests that good things come to those who wait, people in the box industry know customers do not always buy into this philosophy. When technology and markets improve, so does the expectation for increased box quality and reliable delivery times. It then follows that the plant that can deliver both of these value propositions will get the most business and customer satisfaction.

So, when California Box in Southern California purchased an EMBA Ultima FFG and increased productivity by 15 percent within one year, the desired outcome was achieved. Business increased with the ability to deliver high quality product in shorter time periods. Although there are many Ultima installations around the world, Cal- ifornia Box is one of the first plants to be awarded for its commitment to fast set-up technology with their four EMBA Ultima set while run machines purchased. In total, California Box Group has purchased six EMBAs since its inception in 1984. Now, with EMBA’s newest platform, they are poised to be running four Ultima machines in three of their five plants covering Southern California, Arizona and West Texas. The only company in North America with four EMBA Ultima machines in their arsenal is a testament to the reliability and productivity of these machines. AICC Partners With The Packaging School On Certificate Program AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, in collab- oration with The Packaging School, announced the launch of the Business Management in Corrugated Packaging (BMCP) Certificate Program, a first-of-its-kind professional development opportunity crafted for professionals in the corrugated industry. Enrollment is now open for the inau- gural cohort, beginning Fall 2025. This immersive, 12 to 18-month program blends core MBA-level business principles with specialized instruction in corrugated packaging, empowering participants to lead in today’s marketplace confidently. Through a rigorous combination of in-person instruction, online coursework, and real-world application, professionals will gain the fi-
nancial, operational, and strategic insight essential for driving meaningful results in their companies. Participants will: • Master Business & Packaging Strategy – Develop lead- ership, finance, and operational skills tailored to the corrugated industry. • Customized Learning Experience – Participants choose course paths aligned with personal and professional objectives. • Engage with Industry Experts – Learn directly from in- dustry professionals and connect with peers in a small, collaborative cohort of 5-10 participants. • Solve Real-World Challenges – Apply classroom learn- ing to real industry issues through a comprehensive capstone project. The BMCP program, facilitated by Julie Rice Suggs, PhD, begins with an in-person kickoff at The Packaging
School in Clemson, South Carolina, where participants meet their cohort and facilita- tor, establish personal learning goals, and work with an advisor to select their cours- es. Next, they will complete the Clemson Corrugated Packaging Seminar—a two- day immersive event focused on emerging industry trends, material innovations, and cutting-edge packaging design. Participants will then move into the pro- gram’s core, selecting two courses from each of the five modules: Leadership & Strategy, Operations Management, Mar- keting & Sales, Finance & Business Acu- men, and Packaging Design & Innovation. These modules cover topics ranging from corporate strategy and project manage- ment to lean manufacturing, safety compli- ance, financial forecasting, and more. The capstone project is a signature el- ement of the program. Participants will ap- ply their learning to a real-world challenge in the corrugated industry, culminating in a formal presentation of their solution to a board of industry leaders, AICC execu- tives, and representatives from their com- pany. Finally, participants will celebrate their success and be recognized at the AICC Annual Meeting, where they will receive their certificates. “The BMCP program is a unique edu- cational experience,” said Mike D’Ange- lo, President of AICC. “It’s designed not only to build business acumen but also to deepen packaging-specific knowledge in ways that matter most to independent con- verters and their future.” Applications are now being accepted. Momentum In Motion: PPC’s 2025 Spring Outlook Sets A New Standard BY THE PAPERBOARD PACKAGING COUNCIL With momentum as both the theme and the driving force, more than 200 leaders from across the paperboard pack- aging industry came together in Indianapolis for the Pa- perboard Packaging Council’s (PPC) 2025 Spring Outlook & Strategies Conference. Held April 23–25, the event de- livered three days of fresh thinking, bold leadership, and industry-defining conversations, ranging from workforce engagement and cybersecurity to sustainability and the evolving economic landscape. From the moment attendees arrived at the Indianapolis Zoo for a one-of-a-kind Welcome Reception at the Dolphin Exhibit, it was clear this meeting would be something spe- cial. New ideas sparked, old friends reunited, and an un- mistakable energy carried through every session. “This Spring Meeting embodied the best of PPC: com- munity, candor, and collaboration,” said PPC President Ben Markens. “The conversations we had about talent, AI, sustainability, and the economic forecast weren’t just the- oretical. They were practical, honest, and deeply relevant to the challenges and opportunities our members are nav- igating right now.” Opening remarks came from Eric Frank, SVP of Koenig & Bauer and PPC’s Diamond Sponsor, who reminded at-
tendees that while AI and emerging tech are transforming how we work, human creativity, storytelling, and ingenuity remain irreplaceable. His message was echoed by PPC Board Chair Steve Scherger, EVP & CFO of Graphic Pack- aging International, who encouraged members to lead with clarity and confidence even amid uncertainty.
“Momentum isn’t something we passively receive,” Scherger said. “It’s something we build. It’s what happens when we stay focused, rise to the occasion, and lead with purpose.” Lisa Pruett, President of RRD’s Packaging and Label Segment, opened with a compelling case study on cul- ture-driven transformation. After stabilizing operations, PPC members reconnect and kick off the conference with an unforgettable Welcome Reception at the Indianapolis Zoo’s Dolphin Exhibit.

From a global Culture Scorecard to plant-level roundtables and service projects, RRD’s shift resulted in double-digit improvements in both revenue and retention. Jessica Rosen, Esq., Partner at Greenwald Doherty LLP, delivered a legal roadmap for navigating emerging risks related to AI and DEI programs. Sustainability expert Paul Nowak, Executive Director of GreenBlue, came to the stage to emphasize that “collab- oration is no longer optional—it’s a responsibility.” From the impact of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws to the potential of eco-modulation to reshape costs, Paul offered a candid look at what lies ahead—and how the pa- perboard packaging industry can lead. Chris Kuehl, Managing Director at Armada Corporate Intelligence, offered a high-energy economic forecast, urging companies to stay agile, double down on work- force development, and lean into capital investment. De- spite geopolitical tensions and a looming labor shortage, Chris reassured attendees that the fundamentals of retail, manufacturing, and consumer spending remain strong. The Spring Meeting also celebrated the achievements of PPC members through two signature awards. The Chair’s Safety Award went to Graphic Packaging Inter- national’s Queretaro Plant for achieving the most hours worked in a year without a recordable OSHA incident. The
Volunteer Leader Award was presented to Andy Johnson of Graphic Packaging International for his outstanding ser- vice, mentorship, and leadership in PPC’s sustainability initiatives. “This was more than just a meeting,” said Scherger. “It was a moment. A moment of learning, listening, and lead- ing together. We proved once again that this industry is full of momentum—and it’s ours to carry forward.” During PPC’s interactive breakout sessions, attendees dive deep into timely topics like sustainability, safety, workforce de- velopment, and cybersecurity.

plants could not reach their maximum potential. When CalBox moved into running E-flute, a more difficult sheet convert, this needed to be addressed. John Widera, the company’s Chairman recognized the problem and took
cess. California Box Group has prioritized short production runs since its founding over 40 years ago. Chris Widera, President, insists on and enforces the standard that speed will not compromise quality. “We always strive for total quality,” said Widera. “We believe in satisfied customers. We are all in the customer service business. Our success is eventually determined by the reaction to our service attitude. Superior responsive- ness allows us to be competitive. It also complements the throughput of the EMBA machines.” Throughout their time in the business, CalBox has moved from serving light industrial end-use markets to the high-tech sector, in which customers are extremely critical of the boxes they receive. Thus, meeting stringent qual- ity and reliability demands became the company’s forte. These quality control requirements set standards for sus- tainability and waste reduction due to the environmental specs of tough broker and distributor customers. Only boxes that conform to these regulations will ship. The idea of ‘good enough’ does not apply with production off the EMBAs. EMBA’s full non-crush technology throughout the machine ensures we always produce a better box. Demand began to outweigh the supply several years back and CalBox, so adept at producing high quality box- es, needed to change. The plant was running two shifts a day, six days a week. Even with additional hours, the
a solutions-oriented approach as written in several of his books. “Unfortunately, a fact of the corrugated business is that sheet suppliers are not always able to conform to min- imum TAPPI standards as far as flat sheets are concerned. From our industry standpoint, we can either do nothing or we can look for a solution,” Widera said. The EMBA allows sheets to be controlled from the pat- ent EMBA feeder all the way to the counter ejector with

full vacuum transfer. Full vacuum transfer even controls the sheet through the patent Magna Vacuum slot/score section eliminating the need of the slotting heads to pull the sheets though, producing a better box for the custom- er and causing less issues for the crew. “A smoother pro- duction process has allowed line crews to function more efficiently. It made the crews’ job easier, and those are the

people you first need to satisfy for increased production,” Widera said. According to Nick Widera, Vice President of Manufac- turing, the purchase of the EMBAs did more than increase productivity by 15 percent. It also helped maintain quality production standards with improved print registration. The EMBA is equipped with full servo technology and direct drive print cylinders for improved print capability. With the
new feeder technology and elimination of a feed roll a stronger box is also produced. This also allows for lighter weight materials to be utilized without loss of box integrity. Everyone benefits from reduced set-up times: customers, management, production and maintenance crews. CalBox has invested in several new machines over the last several years, digital printers and cutting tables, flat bed die-cutters, a 90”x220” press, and several specialty gluers. The company also has BHS Corrugated lines to supply flat sheets to their five converting operations. “Part of our value statement is learn, risk, grow and serve. This means the organization must invest in its peo- ple as well. A successful mix comes from integrating the best of both: “great equipment along with a total pro- ductive maintenance program only works if you have the right people as well,” Widera said. “You need to have your team members properly trained and you have to keep the equipment in the best possible condition so crews can meet and adhere to all customer requirements. These are also part of our business model.” For the California Box Groups five companies, investing in people means creating a cohesive team atmosphere in

which every team member can feel confident in having a say in overcoming issues, improving productivity process- es and achieving operation excellence. The team concept runs throughout the company and is taught and continually practiced within the CalBox Group. Management believes continual improvement is everyone’s responsibility and in everyone’s best interest. Each machine center holds inter- active team meetings. The plant sponsors machine center and shift bonuses to help keep the crews motivated. Goals are established and when they are met, employees are rewarded and performance is celebrated. For the EMBA crews these goals are consistently being raised as pro- duction continues to thrive. Widera stresses the importance of supporting employ- ees, especially for a job well done. “It’s becoming very dif- ficult to find talent in the industry who have the knowledge of new machine technology and ideas of where a compa- ny can grow in the future. Once you find them, they’re truly worth holding onto,” says Chris Widera. Practicing what it preaches, CalBox has already demon- strated their commitment to EMBA with the most recent purchase for a machine for its Santa Fe Springs location focusing on the EMBA’s capabilities for customers with high-graphic products requiring problem solving ideas. The philosophy of continuous learning and adaptation has treated the company well. It seems that good things can come using the on time, with quality and no excuses practices.
