CHILDHOOD WAKE-UP CALL HOW I DISCOVERED THE DANGERS OF WALKING TO SCHOOL CellinoLaw.com October/November 2024 Advisor

When I was growing up, I walked to school on my own. It was not the 7-mile trek through snow or rain up a hill that many older people joke about but a decently short mile-and-a-half walk. The walk was no big deal back then, and I thought nothing of it for years. However, when I was 14, I had a fateful trip home that would forever change my perception of walking to school and how kids should travel, especially in the city. DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE My path to and from school involved walking along the side of the road. Not any road, though — it was a busy two-lane highway where cars were traveling at least 40 mph. These days, as a personal injury attorney, how I view pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists is

completely different. I am more critical of people allowing their children to navigate high-traffic areas unsupervised, especially when that means they are walking on the side of the highway on their way to school. So, needless to say, my path to and from school as a kid would horrify me if I saw it today, but it horrified me back then for an entirely different reason. DIRE DISCOVERY While making my way home after class, I saw a strange puddle on the gravel shoulder on the side of the road. The puddle did not seem full of water; it had not rained that day, and the liquid was brown, thick , and strange. Being a kid and wondering what the hell it was, I picked up a rock and tossed it into the puddle. The colors changed. What was once brown began to appear red, making the liquid appear like blood. I was thoroughly weirded out at that point and thought it best to ignore it and keep going. Once I arrived back home, I heard that one of the twins who lived down the road — whom I used to hang out with regularly — was hit by a car on the side of the road and killed. I am thankful I stopped “investigating” after throwing that rock. Because what I had unwittingly done was disturb the site where my friend had died earlier that day. It shocked me and continues to affect my thinking to this day. That experience, more than anything, is why I didn’t want my kids riding their bikes on the side of the road and why I am critical of my grandkids commuting in high-traffic areas. Whenever bad things happen, we always instinctively think, “That could never happen to me.” But it can, and it does. To compound my fears, although people are not supposed to text and drive, many do, putting their lives and the lives of others at risk. Many are so distracted while driving that the effect is similar to driving while intoxicated. Think carefully before putting your life, or the lives of your children and grandchildren, in harm's way; do not commute carelessly, be careful out there, and stay safe.

Make no bones about it; our skeletons are a real rib-tickler of fascinating facts! From the impressive strength of our thigh bones to the tiny marvels of the inner ear, your bones are the unsung heroes of your body. So, rest your bones in a comfy chair because we are about to dig up some of the most shocking skeletal secrets. BABIES HAVE MORE BONES THAN ADULTS. Although babies are tiny, their bodies have many bones in a pudgy, little package. Human babies have about 300 bones compared to an adult’s 206. Many extra bones are entirely or partly made of cartilage, allowing the baby to stay flexible in the womb. Over time, the bones fuse and decrease in number. Fracture rates are highest when kids are around ages 11–15, the critical time for significant growth spurts thanks to growth plates that close as we age. HALF OF OUR BONES ARE IN OUR FEET AND HANDS. Did you know that many of our bones are in the smaller extremities of our body? Nearly half of our 206 adult bones are in our hands and feet! Each foot has 26 bones, and our hands both have 27 bones, which is 106 bones. Our hands even have a bonus bone called the pisiform, located on the outside edge of our wrists. THE FUNNY BONE IS A NERVE. Have you ever hit your funny bone? Well, you are not hitting a bone at all. This area on the body is part of the ulnar nerve, which goes from your neck to your hand. Bone, muscle, and fat typically protect nerves, but a small portion of this nerve on the back of your elbow is more exposed. So, when you hit your funny bone, named for its location near the humerus bone (a homophone of “humorous”), you’re really bumping into the ulnar nerve. So, now that you’ve “boned up” on the most fascinating fossil facts, give your skeleton a little nod for the incredible things it does to support you and keep you moving! ‘Bone’ Voyage EXPLORING THE MARVELS OF YOUR SKELETAL SYSTEM!

CRASH COURSE What to Know About Insurance Claims in Uber and Lyft Accidents

once the driver has accepted a ride and continues until the passengers are dropped off and the ride is completed.

After a collision with a rideshare vehicle, it's important to follow the same protocol as you would after any other car accident. Call 911 to have the police come to the scene and file an official report. Be sure to take photos and videos of the damages, the accident scene, and any relevant signage or conditions that may have contributed to the incident. If you’re injured, you should immediately seek medical care from an urgent care center. If you delay in seeking immediate medical treatment, the insurance company can claim you were injured in some other incident other than the rideshare accident. Since Uber and Lyft accidents typically involve dealing with a third-party insurance provider, seeking advice from a skilled personal injury attorney can be beneficial. An attorney’s involvement signals to the insurance company that you are serious about obtaining the compensation you deserve for any injuries sustained in the collision. When recovering from injuries sustained in an Uber or Lyft accident, the last thing you want to worry about is facing large insurance companies alone. At Cellino Law, our experienced legal team understands the complexities of rideshare accidents and insurance claims. We are dedicated to advocating for your rights and pursuing the best possible outcome for your case. Contact us at 888-888-8888 for a free case consultation with a member of our legal team.

Navigating the aftermath of a car accident can be overwhelming, especially when it involves a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft. If you’ve been injured in an accident with a rideshare vehicle, understanding how the insurance coverage works is essential to ensure you receive the compensation you deserve. In accidents involving rideshare drivers, the insurance claims process depends on whether the driver was "on the clock" at the time. If the driver was not logged into the app, their personal auto insurance will be the primary coverage. When the driver is logged into the app and waiting for a request, the rideshare company’s insurance provides limited liability coverage. The most comprehensive coverage is available

Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., a prominent scientist with a 40-year career in federal service, argues that water fluoridation is outdated due to concerns about its impact on brain development and lack of proven benefits from ingesting fluoride. As the former director of the National Toxicology Program (NTP), she initiated a review of fluoride’s neurotoxicity, despite facing resistance from political and dental groups who support fluoridation. The NTP’s 2024 review found consistent evidence linking fluoride exposure to lower IQ in children. They analyzed 547 studies, including 167 human studies from various countries, covering over 7,000 children. Of the 19 high-quality studies, 18 showed that higher fluoride exposure was associated with lower IQ scores. This strong evidence suggests that U.S. water fluoridation levels (0.7 mg/L) may be contributing to reduced IQ in some children, as these levels often exceed safe limits. There were also signs that fluoride might be linked to other neurodevelopmental issues, like ADHD. Experts Weigh In THE FACTS ON FLUORIDE

Additional research supports these concerns, showing that prenatal fluoride exposure is linked to behavioral problems and potential harm to developing brains, including changes in fetal proteins related to oxidative stress and inflammation. This suggests that even low levels of fluoride considered “safe” could have unintended effects on fetal development. To minimize these risks, consider using a high-quality water filter that removes fluoride, and choose fluoride-free dental products. Typical toothpaste has a warning label on the tube that states, “If swallowed, call the poison control center.” But toothpaste manufacturers also produce bubble gum flavors that encourage children to swallow the toothpaste. Effective fluoride removal methods include reverse osmosis, while common carbon filters and water softeners are not sufficient. Evaluating these options can help you choose the best approach to reduce fluoride exposure for your family’s health.
