Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., a prominent scientist with a 40-year career in federal service, argues that water fluoridation is outdated due to concerns about its impact on brain development and lack of proven benefits from ingesting fluoride. As the former director of the National Toxicology Program (NTP), she initiated a review of fluoride’s neurotoxicity, despite facing resistance from political and dental groups who support fluoridation. The NTP’s 2024 review found consistent evidence linking fluoride exposure to lower IQ in children. They analyzed 547 studies, including 167 human studies from various countries, covering over 7,000 children. Of the 19 high-quality studies, 18 showed that higher fluoride exposure was associated with lower IQ scores. This strong evidence suggests that U.S. water fluoridation levels (0.7 mg/L) may be contributing to reduced IQ in some children, as these levels often exceed safe limits. There were also signs that fluoride might be linked to other neurodevelopmental issues, like ADHD. Experts Weigh In THE FACTS ON FLUORIDE
Additional research supports these concerns, showing that prenatal fluoride exposure is linked to behavioral problems and potential harm to developing brains, including changes in fetal proteins related to oxidative stress and inflammation. This suggests that even low levels of fluoride considered “safe” could have unintended effects on fetal development. To minimize these risks, consider using a high-quality water filter that removes fluoride, and choose fluoride-free dental products. Typical toothpaste has a warning label on the tube that states, “If swallowed, call the poison control center.” But toothpaste manufacturers also produce bubble gum flavors that encourage children to swallow the toothpaste. Effective fluoride removal methods include reverse osmosis, while common carbon filters and water softeners are not sufficient. Evaluating these options can help you choose the best approach to reduce fluoride exposure for your family’s health.
