Eight of us, everyone wearing thier fin - est outfits, suits and ties for men, and dresses for women. As a tourist I had few choices of what to wear, but nor - mally a painting class means old cloth- ing. We had a few people monitoring us, and a few providing support. I was told we are to paint two coats of green and one of orange for the hair and mouth. I had no idea we were painting a diety. “I said, I am a painter can I paint it howev - er I would like?”

The response was no way. You can’t make any changes. As an artist I was upset. As a guest I was polite and followed the program. In the end I realized this was a class in conformity and perhaps soleminity, too becuase I can’t under- stand the religion. One of the biggest take-a- ways I learned form my Japanese experience is how noce these people are at every age group. I felt safe always.
