COVER STORY

Like Father, Like Son

In 1999, Scott Sinkinson and his father Jon started a business building and installing kitchen cabinets. Both being skilled woodworkers and cabinet-makers, they set off with their business and soon were working seven days a week throughout Georgia and Florida. Early on, they realized that neither the Dodge 1500 Scott drove, nor his dad’s Jeep Cherokee were going to make it in this business. They needed much higher load capacity and better fuel economy. As a Mopar family, the choice was obvious: Ram Turbo Diesel trucks. Their unanimous decision to upgrade to the Ram Turbo Diesel trucks would prove to have far-reaching consequences for their lives beyond the cabinet business. Over the next years they happily ran their father and son business, each running their own full-time crew. During that time, they had a total of four Ram Turbo Diesels: a 1997 3500, two 1999 2500s, and a 2003 2500. All were black, 4X4s. Ultimately, they closed the business when the housing market declined in 2007. Jon has enjoyed retirement, and as you may know, Scott works here as our head tech guy (see sidebar)!

What About the Truck? Of the four Ram Turbo Diesel trucks they owned, Scott kept the 1999 2500, which is featured on the cover of this catalog. The truck has gone through notable changes over the past 17 years with multiple swaps and upgrades.

These changes started with a rebuilt 47RE transmission, larger turbo, upgraded injectors and more. This ultimately translated to a solid 420 hp and 890 ft-lb of torque on a dyno until the 53 block cracked, which was fixed with Lock-N-Stitch* until the fix began to leak. Then, being totally committed, Scott put the truck through another major overhaul. The engine was pulled, and he added a second turbo; larger injectors; a ported, polished and o-ringed cylinder head; and engine block. He then did a P-7100 injection pump swap with a camshaft and new injectors, and a full suspension rebuild including a Spyntec hub conversion; 2002 front and rear axles; and 2003-2008 brake rotor and caliper upgrades. We’ve got the full story on his truck restoration in our Shop Talk blog post: Catalog 126 Cover Story: Scott and Jon Sinkinson

*That the 53 block began leaking after the fix was no reflection on the repair product Scott used. He takes full responsibility as he admits he is far from easy on his trucks. For the full story on Scott’s experience with the Lock-N-Stitch repair, see Turbo Diesel Register magazine #62 (November 2008).

“WHAT ABOUT ME?” Since Scott and his father did all of their truck maintenance themselves, early on they discovered our warehouse was local to them. Over the years, they became not just loyal, local customers of ours, but genuine friends whose judgement we could trust. So, when we were looking to add to our tech staff, Brandon Parks called Scott to ask him if he knew anyone he could recommend for the job. “What about me?” was his reply. Scott just celebrated his 17 th work anniversary with us!
