A CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC HERITAGE
As you know, September marked the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Between Saturday, Sept. 15, and Monday, Oct. 15, there are countless events and celebrations across the U.S. commemorating Hispanic and Latino heritage. In the last edition of the newsletter, we highlighted a few of those events. With the South’s incredibly rich Hispanic past, you can be sure there will be events just about every day throughout September and October. With all of these events, it’s an opportunity for the whole country to really celebrate Hispanic Americans and the many contributions they’ve made to this country over the years. In many ways, Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder that people of Hispanic and Latino descent play a huge role in making the U.S. great. “No matter the industry, no matter the profession, you will find a Latino individual making a difference. The Latino community is incredible!”

To say “Hispanic” or “Latino” doesn’t do these folks justice. There are so many countries that share in the Spanish language, but all of these countries and their people have their own identities. To bring this diversity of heritage into the mind of the public is beautiful. It’s an opportunity for both Latino and non-Latino people to come together to celebrate that diversity. Hispanic Heritage Month began last month on Sept. 15 in commemoration of the momentous day in 1821 when five Latin American countries declared independence from Spain. The countries were Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Mexico had previously declared its independence from Spain on Sept. 16, 1810. Two other countries — Chile and Belize — also declared independence in the month of September. Specifically, Chile declared independence from Spain on Sept. 18, 1810, while Belize declared independence from the United Kingdom on Sept. 21, 1981 — a more recent development. At the Solano Law Firm, a majority of our clients are from Spanish-speaking countries. We’re proud to be able to work directly with the Latino community, and we’re proud that we’re able to contribute to the diversity of this country and help Latino families achieve their dreams, adding their names to the long list of immigrants who have helped make this country what it is.

Como deben saber, Septiembre marca el inicio del Mes Nacional del Patrimonio Hispano. Entre el Sábado 15 de Septiembre y el Lunes 15 de Octubre, hay incontables eventos y celebraciones por todos los Estados Unidos conmemorando el patrimonio Hispano y Latino. En la última edición del boletín informativo, resaltamos algunos de estos eventos. Con el pasado Hispano increíblemente rico del Sur, pueden estar seguros que habrá eventos casi todos los días durante Septiembre y Octubre. Con todos estos eventos, es una oportunidad para todo el país de celebrar realmente a los Hispano Americanos y todas las contribuciones que han hecho a este país con el paso de los años. How Military Families Can Benefit From This Immigration Law
Military families have an additional option when it comes to obtaining a green card. Called the Parole in Place program (PIP), this option was first implemented in 2013. Since then, it has given undocumented family members of U.S. military personnel the option to apply for a green card without leaving the country. At its core, the PIP program keeps families together. The immediate families of U.S. military members, active or veteran, may be eligible. In order to be eligible for PIP, the current U.S. citizen and member of the military must be one of the following: • An active-duty member of the U.S. armed forces • A current member of the Selected Reserve of the Ready Reserve • A person who previously served in the U.S. armed forces or Selected Reserve of the Ready Reserve The immediate family member who is seeking parole in place must be related in one of the following ways to the military member: In order to apply for PIP, you must fill out the Form I-131 Application for Travel Document. You will also need the following documentation: • Evidence of family relationship to the U.S. citizen military service member (copy of a birth or marriage certificate) PAROLE IN PLACE Cómo las Familias de Militares pueden beneficiarse de esta Ley de Inmigración Las familias de militares tienen una opción adicional para obtener la residencia. Llamado el Programa “Parole In Place” (“PIP”), esta opción se implementó por primera vez en 2013. In honor of Veterans Day in November, we want to help as many military families as possible. If you are undocumented and part of a military family, give us a call.
