I n infancy there are two things that evoke fear and damage the secur­ ity of an individual, declares Dr. John D. Frame, noted Christian psychiatrist. In his book, Personality Development in the Christian Life , he gives these as the sound of a sudden loud noise and the sensation of falling. As a child grows and develops he becomes more aware of his surroundings and the peo­ ple that make up his world. Then it is that other things become important to his security. His parents who provide food, the members of his family who provide love and a sense of belonging, and his social surroundings which yield a feeling of being needed and wanted. Anything that happens to damage any of these relationships, damages the feeling of security that is so important to good emotional development.

Some psychologists say that one cri­ teria for determining mental health is the degree to which an individual feels secure; loved or unloved, wanted or unwanted; and whether he is afraid of being harmed or abandoned. Our Lord Jesus Christ attached much importance to these very things in His own ministry. These problems of life were dealt with in a very definite way. For instance, the Word of God deals much with the matter of security. Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spir­ it states with great certainty, “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound unto every good work” (II Cor. 9:8). “My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in (continued on next page)
