was very young. By some strange fate of the law, he was placed in the hands of a woman who, not only was a drunkard, but also treated him very harshly. She sent him out. to beg in the bitter cold of the sea son. The only pleasure he found in toys was in looking at them through the window of a store. He knew they were not meant for him, for a glass always separated them. A set of tiny toy soldiers held his partic ular fancy, and he would love to look at them imagining what it would be like to own them. Then one day, while searching for a few more pennies, he was struck down by a cat. Taken to a hospital, the nurses and doctors showed him the first love he had known. He spoke in his unconsciousness of the toy soldiers, and when he awoke, he discovered that they had gone to gether and purchased the set for him. He quickly sat up in bed, and with wonderment in his heart and eyes, touched the toys that before he had only seen through the window. His first exclamation was to say in- crediously, “Look! Look, there?s no glass between!” A beautiful sto ry, and yet for us, too, my friend, there is the realization that these things of life which seem so strange, when we awaken in glory, w ill be fu lly revealed to us. “We’ll catch the broken thread again, And finish what we have begun; Heaven w ill t^e mysteries ex plain, And then, ah, then, we’ll under stand.” “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known!” (I Cor. 13:12). 30
