Meet Philip Nimmo
Philip Nimmo grew up in the seaside town of San Clemente in Southern California. The beach was his backyard, and nature was his muse. Today, you can see echoes of those organic influences in his choices, from the agates that mark his fire screens to how he layers shadows and light.

Although Nimmo was a gifted student who enjoyed all subjects, he has always had a penchant for art and immersed himself in art electives in high school. In one leatherworking class, he made a satchel accented by hand-hammered copper detail. Nearly 50 years later, he has held true to those early instincts, and you can see echoes of those same design elements in his furniture today.
Nimmo attended the University of Southern California to study business management, but he transitioned to join staff at the then-newly formed Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, where he studied under the legendary Horst Schulze.

“A result of that training was, although we may not consciously recognize that things are perfect, our subconscious knows it. All those small details add up and give our brains peace. Why does this room feel so good? There are so many dynamics we have to pay attention to that you can’t learn in school. The more I can surrender to my natural talent, the more I can feel it.”

Eventually, Nimmo began working as an interior designer, and soon he was attracting big- name clients, such as singer-songwriter Randy Newman. It was Newman’s fireplace that sparked Nimmo’s product line. When Nimmo couldn’t find the right screen for Newman’s odd-shaped fireplace, Nimmo decided to create his own. But a happy accident led to the fire screen being made in the wrong size. A West Hollywood showroom offered to carry the extra screen — it sold instantly off the floor. The showroom wanted more, and the Philip Nimmo line quickly grew to include representation at multiple showrooms across the country.
Newman Sofa Soon, Nimmo was designing other fire screens and iron tools, and he began to expand his designs into other forms: sofas, cabinets, tables, lighting. The full line was born. Today, a staple in Nimmo’s furniture line is the Newman Sofa, originally custom-designed for the Newman household.

Inspiration

“I want to give my clients what they want in a way that allows it to be tasteful and timeless, that reflects who they are.”
– P H I L I P N I MMO
Philip Nimmo is inspired and motivated by his clients, first and foremost. The better he connects with a client, the better he can channel their style, desires and needs. His goal is to create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing and practical. Spaces that create moments that effortlessly flow and feel good. For Nimmo, it’s not just about the appearance — it’s deeper. It’s an experience.

“What excites me is the satisfaction of a job well done. I really am motivated by my clients being happy.”
– P H I L I P N I MMO
Nimmo’s design process includes taking time to truly understand his clients: asking questions and listening. “First, I try to find their truth. What is their absolute truth in who they are?” he says. “Then, I want to understand their aspirations. The person’s core is the foundation for the room, and their aspirations are what we project into that space.” In other words, Nimmo’s design extends beyond just what the clients like and into their why. In that, Nimmo’s design is co-creation with the clients. “By participating in the outcome, it can lift them up to new heights,” he says.

Interior Design Projects
Here is a closer look at a few of Nimmo’s interior design projects.

Five Shadows This is a contemporary home in Jackson Hole inspired by a sleek mountain getaway. The goal was to make this a family house, while staying clean and slick. The design incorporates classic Italian furniture to seemingly transport you into the Italian Alps. The home includes five different pavilions, connected via glass corridors that blur the boundaries between inside and outside.

“I’ve been gifted with the talent of design discernment. I can look at something and know yes, that’s correct. Not right or wrong, but correct in the emotion. In its vibration. In how it feels.”

Resort Living This is a contemporary craftsman home with Asian flavor that mainly used two materials: French limestone and exotic wenge wood. The challenge was being oceanfront in Laguna Beach with many restrictions. The inspiration was to create a unique Asian-inspired beach home with plenty of indoor-outdoor living that was great for entertaining.

Resort Living
The design is sinuous and sexy, with reflecting pools, Buddha statues and fire and water combinations. This beach house was designed for drama, totally sublime. No matter what corner you turn, there’s a new wow factor.

Coastal Villa
This is a Malibu hilltop home done in the style of a Tuscan farmhouse with a commanding, 360-degree view. The design needed to incorporate the clients’ outstanding art collection and seamlessly blend vintage and antique pieces from different periods.

FIRE Fire Screen
Nimmo’s ironwork is the heart of his line and encompasses iron, brass and bronze in various finishes (gilded or painted, oxidized or polished, oil rubbed, hammered, textured, plated, you name it). The woodwork (typically walnut, sycamore and oak, although Nimmo can work with any wood) is bespoke — it’s truly benchmade with no compromises. Every piece of furniture is handmade around the Los Angeles area
and comes signed and numbered. The majority of his line showcases metal accents that pay homage to Nimmo’s iron roots. These are the kinds of pieces you pass onto your kids to keep in the family for generations to come. Nimmo’s line is the antiques of tomorrow.

This four-door cabinet made out of walnut features a bronze “Cruz” pattern — one of Nimmo’s signature designs. The hand-hammered detailing is a direct descendant of Nimmo’s first design nearly 50 years ago.
