Remembering the Y2K Meltdown That Wasn’t All That Panic for This?

2026 JAN

Every time a new year rolls around, I’m reminded of a

I don’t know whether my mom forgot or fell asleep. All I remember is that I woke up after midnight had already passed! It was almost 1 a.m., and I had missed it! I remember being so upset. “I can’t believe you didn’t wake me up! I wanted to see this one!” I said. “I’m not going to be around for another 1,000 years to see the next one!” My mom felt bad, but I’m sure she had already seen reassuring news from elsewhere in the world. In Australia, where Y2K was hitting more than a half-day earlier than in the Eastern U.S., nothing catastrophic was happening. The only thing I remember from my first moment awake in the new millennium was waking up and realizing I had missed it. I don’t think it was more than 30 minutes after midnight. I did stay up for another hour to watch the replays, though. (We weren’t recording events as we do now, and I couldn’t just rewind the DVR.) The turn of the century turned out to be kind of anticlimactic, but in a good way. All my dismay about missing the passing of midnight seemed kind of silly, in retrospect. We don’t have any special plans for this New Year’s Eve with Bennett. We’ll consider the evening a success if we get him to bed by 8 p.m., as usual. He definitely won’t be staying up to welcome the New Year.

lesson I learned one New Year’s Eve when I was very young: Don’t get too excited about things that might happen. I was about 11 years old when all the global excitement and apprehension erupted over the approach of Y2K. People were concerned about how

computers would respond to the change of the calendar year, and anticipation was running high. The thought was that the transition would disrupt everything. Many programs from that era recorded dates in two digits only, eliminating the difference between the years 2000 and 1900. Would the millions of computers we had come to rely upon be able to flip smoothly

from 1999 to 2000? Or would they all ratchet 100 years back in time to 1900, or melt down, or something worse? Some forecasters predicted that crashing computers would inflict hundreds of billions of dollars of economic damage. And some people were stockpiling food, water, and firearms and buying backup generators as if the apocalypse were at hand. My family wasn’t into all the doom and gloom. We weren’t thinking the world was going to fall apart. Nevertheless, people were partying extra hard that year, and I wanted to be sure to be awake when our clocks passed midnight. My parents typically let me stay up for New Year’s Eve. For Y2K, I decided to catch a nap early, but asked my mom to make sure she woke me up. I didn’t want to miss seeing what happened at midnight!

But Marah and I will be looking back at the year, and looking ahead to the New Year. And from our house to yours, we wish

you a pleasant New Year’s celebration … with realistic expectations for the future, enriched by lots of fun!

HOW YOUR DIET IMPACTS YOUR CANCER RISK Is That Hot Dog Worth It? Around 40% of Americans develop some type of cancer in their lifetime. That’s a staggering number! You’ve likely known many people who have been treated for cancer, and it’s almost always a surprise when you learn of anyone else getting the diagnosis. Even as we learn about new carcinogens and take action to cut obvious risks, such as quitting smoking or cutting down on alcohol, cancer diagnoses remain steady. This has led many to wonder what they can do to further reduce their risk of developing cancer.

HOW CH EARN MO

Leading a chiropractic clinic can feel like running an obstacle course, from processing payments and managing staff to finding new ways to grow.

As seen with many other aspects of health, what we eat directly affects how we feel. Recent research shows just how instrumental diet is in cancer prevention. A steady diet of hot dogs, bacon, deli meat, and other processed meats can increase your risk for cancer. Even red meat can play a role, so limiting your consumption is important.

Amidst rapid increases in competition and new technology, many chiropractors are seeking ways to reduce costs and streamline their operations. Those are challenges that NCMIC, a provider of insurance and financial services to chiropractors, helps some 42,000 members manage every day. “Many chiropractors lack experience in managing credit card processing, for example, leaving them vulnerable to for-profit vendors that might sell them expensive programs with large margins and hidden fees,” says Ahmed Ibrahim, director of sales and business development for the merchant processing division of NCMIC.

However, while no food can completely prevent the development of cancer, some can help fight against it and reduce your risk. You want to look for foods with a high concentration of phytochemicals, a natural plant compound that helps prevent disease. It contains berries, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, grapes, grapefruit, leafy greens, pears, oranges, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. And you can take it even further by pairing your fruits and vegetables with healthier protein options, such as fish, lean chicken, turkey, tofu, chickpeas, and eggs.

NCMIC offers standard credit card and ACH processing services, but often at a lower markup, with the added benefit of specialized customer service by a dedicated staff that understands chiropractors and their needs. And as a mutual company, NCMIC is owned by its policyholders and returns dividends to them, rather than distributing profits to shareholders. “Maybe we can save them a few dollars on merchant processing, but they’re also going to get a team that is familiar with the industry, picks up the phone, and is very concerned about taking care of any issues that they have,” Ibrahim says.

If you worry about getting cancer and want to take action to reduce your risks, one of the best things you can do is plan your grocery shopping. Make a comprehensive list that includes healthy options while avoiding cancer- causing foods. As grocery prices soar, consider looking for the less expensive options, which is perfectly okay, as long as you make healthy choices. Compare labels and choose options with the fewest ingredients. The more complicated the ingredients get, the less likely you are to know what you’re consuming. You are what you eat, so make sure to eat healthy food! It may help you live the longest, most fulfilling life possible.

NCMIC can also conduct an analysis of a chiro’s current credit- card processing system and the technology “to see if we can save them money … and we typically can,” Ibrahim says. On the other hand, he adds, “If they’re getting a good deal, we’ll tell them they are.” NCMIC helps some chiros save money by integrating payment processing into other technology platforms.

Additionally, Ibrahim suggests the following strategies to further reduce costs.

VETTING SERVICE PROVIDERS Make a concerted effort at least once a year to review all your vendors. Look for ways to save money and cancel unnecessary subscriptions. As part of this process, consider outsourcing admin tasks you don’t want to do, or don’t know how to do, such as human resources, payroll, or accounting tasks. Partnering with a provider of good recordkeeping technology can help maintain the kind of accurate, detailed patient notes and records that reduce chances of malpractice claims, Ibrahim says. NCMIC’s website has webinars on recordkeeping and other topics to help chiros reduce risk. EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY An interactive website tied to your practice’s social media accounts and offering online payment options can make your services more attractive to potential patients and more welcoming to current ones. A growing number of marketing services companies are well- equipped to assist clinicians in acquiring new patients and retaining

the ones they have, Ibrahim shares. NCMIC’s website offers a webinar on using social media analytics to grow, in addition to other marketing resources. NCMIC was founded by four chiropractors in 1946 to offer insurance to chiropractors, and today serves about 60% of the nation’s practitioners. The company also invests millions of dollars in research to benefit the field, supports chiropractic universities and colleges, and offers consulting and training services to newcomers to the field.

MAKE WINTER BONFIRES YOUR NEW TRADITION DON’T LET THE FIRE DIE

Many Americans invite their friends and family for a bonfire throughout the summer and fall. Nothing beats making s’mores, sharing stories, and enjoying the flickering flame under the moonlight. As temperatures drop and winter weather appears on the radar, some cover and ignore their bonfire area until after the cold and rainy seasons. However, you can still create an awe- inspiring bonfire during winter if you put together a plan. Winter bonfires can quickly become a regular part of your seasonal traditions, and these strategies will help ensure your bonfire is a hit with everyone who attends. HELP PEOPLE STAY WARM. Nobody wants to sit outside in the dark and freezing cold. Encourage everyone attending to dress in warm clothes appropriate for the

frigid temperatures, but be prepared to help out if someone starts to feel chilly. Have extra blankets and coats within reach so you can easily pass them to anyone in need. PROVIDE TOASTY TREATS. Sometimes, clothes alone are not enough to protect us from winter’s chill. During these moments, it can help to eat or drink something that fills your whole body with

warmth. Thankfully, you’ll have a bonfire to help you toast and warm some delicious treats. S’mores are usually the go-to, but you can also warm up hot dogs, sausages, or even corn on the cob. And don’t forget the drinks! Hot chocolate, warm apple cider, or even tea can help everyone stay comfortable and in good spirits. ADD GAMES OR FUN ACTIVITIES. Some may grow bored with traditional bonfire activities, which is why you should have an extra activity or game up your sleeve. Depending on the lighting, you could play a card or board game. If the lighting is too dim, you can incorporate other activities requiring more movement and adventure. Kids and adults alike will have fun playing a game of flashlight tag or participating in a scavenger hunt. Plus, the extra movement will help everyone stay warm!
