THE MENTORS THAT MAKE US

Certainly that was the case with me. I remember, in particular, my guidance counsellor, Mr. Byerly. We talked often in high school about all kinds of things. He was a hilarious guy — so quirky and goofy — but most importantly, he was one of those people who recognized my potential and encouraged me to pursue a more challenging direction than I might have otherwise. Years later, he’d stop by my parents’ nursery to check in on my family, and he would always ask about what I was up to in my life, where I’d gone, and what I’d accomplished. “It’s funny how many of us often can’t imagine the possibilities right in front of our faces until someone else takes the time to point them out.”

Last month, I went back to Wisconsin, saw my family, and attended my 30-year high school class reunion. Frankly, I couldn’t believe that a whopping 30 years had passed since high school, but my classmates were pretty firm on the matter. When the people in charge of the event asked each of us to share some of our favorite memories of teachers from our past, all I could think of was the first day of kindergarten, staring wide-eyed at my new teacher, whose pretty, long, blond hair mesmerized me as a little girl. I realized that, from that very first day, I loved school, undoubtedly because of her. It got me thinking: The influence a teacher or a mentor can have on their students is really incredible. Not only do they make or break the classroom environment — the determining factor for whether a kid loves science for the rest of his life or avoids it like the plague — but they can mold a child’s self-perception, creating positive changes that will reverberate far into their future.

Mr. Byerly, and dozens of other engaged and motivated teachers, always kept me interested in school. I was one of those kids who always liked school, probably because I liked my teachers. It’s difficult to point to any specific one because they all touched my life in their own unique way. Nearly all of them were incredibly encouraging to me, cultivating a passion for learning. I ended up valedictorian of my graduating class and went on to be the first person in my family to go to college. It’s funny how many of us often can’t imagine the possibilities right in front of our faces until someone else takes the time to point them out — an act that

Back toSchool =BigSavings AUGUST’S BEST DEALS

Vehicles According to USAA, August is a great time to start shopping for a new vehicle. New-year model cars and trucks are trickling onto lots around the country, and dealerships are slightly more motivated to get rid of last year’s stock. Use this time to do research and browse dealer selection. For even more potential savings, USAA suggests visiting the dealership on a Monday or Tuesday and later in the day. School Supplies It goes without saying, but August is the best time to stock up on all kinds of school supplies, from pens to notebooks. But as Lifehacker.com notes, it’s not just school supplies

On August 9, we celebrate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples to promote the rights, culture, and land of descendants of pre-colonial times. Unfortunately, there are still many mysteries surrounding the history of America’s indigenous people. However, Wichita State University personnel have discovered one of the Wichita Native Americans' greatest mysteries: the city of Etzanoa. In the early 1600s, Spanish explorers stumbled upon the city of Etzanoa, and were intimidated by its size. Spanish documents indicate that the town was home to 20,000 Wichita Native Americans and spanned 5 miles, making it the second-largest settlement of Native Americans found in the United States. Experts deemed all documents describing Etzanoa as exaggerated until a high school student, Ziegler, discovered a half-inch iron cannonball in an area between the Walnut and Arkansas rivers in Kansas. Donald Blakeslee, Wichita State anthropologist, realized that Ziegler’s discovery could be Etzanoa, and began August is back-to-school season, and that means you’ll find plenty of items on sale — everything students and families need to start the new school year right. Retailers, both online and off, are vying for your dollar this month, and they know just how much families love to save. Here’s a sample of the items you’ll find on sale in August. Laptops Finding the perfect laptop for yourself or your kids might take a little research, but it’s research that will pay off in the form of big savings. You’ll find discounts at most retailers that offer laptops, including the manufacturers themselves. Apple, HP, Dell, and others typically offer incentives on top of discounts (such as gift cards), so it’s in your best interest to look around to find the deal that works for you. Storage Containers With millions of college students getting ready to head off to school, many retailers are taking advantage of the fact that these kids need a place to store all of their stuff. You, too, can take advantage of these sales to stock up on storage bins and boxes for just about any purpose, from food to clothing storage. In addition to storage containers, you’ll find many home organization products on sale.

that are on sale. It’s also a great time to stock up on general office and stationery supplies for work or the home. And as CBS MoneyWatch reports, you’ll save

big on dorm and office furniture.

to compare the Spanish documents with the land near Arkansas City, Kansas. Blakeslee says the archeological findings in the area, combined with the descriptions in the Spanish documents, confirm where Etzanoa once stood. Smallpox and other diseases killed most of the Wichita population after 1600, and relocation forced survivors to Oklahoma reservations. The tribe subsequently lost most of its culture. Modern-day Wichitas number about 3,000 and are now based in Anadarko, Oklahoma. Now that Etzanoa has been identified, Blakeslee strives to bring awareness to the culture of the Wichita Native Americans. He hopes that the Etzanoa site can be turned into an educational, interactive replica of the town, which could promote awareness of the Wichita culture. With approval and funding, Blakeslee may have the town replica up and running in time for next year’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

Are You Brushing Off the Benefits of Good Oral Hygiene? THE BEST INTENTIONS

It’s pounded into your head your whole life, you need to brush your teeth and gums regularly if you want to have good oral health. It’s a great habit to have. However, what you don’t always hear is how too much of a good thing can be a real problem. Dentists estimate that between 10 and 20 percent of the population have damaged their teeth or gums because of overbrushing. In the world of dentistry, overbrushing is also referred to as “toothbrush abrasion,” and it can actually lead to sensitive teeth and receding gums. Are you diligent about your oral hygiene? If so, the irony is that you may be at the greatest risk of damage from overbrushing — although there’s also a genetic predisposition, and the risk is higher for those who clench or grind their teeth. The fact is, plaque doesn’t require a lot of aggression to remove. It’s a common misconception, which is why you may not realize that brushing hard doesn’t provide any additional benefit to your oral health, and can actually be dangerous if you aren’t careful. You may be overbrushing if you’re being too vigorous each time you do brush or even if you’re brushing too frequently. The real key to successful

brushing is time: Rather than brushing hard for 30 seconds, brush gently for a few minutes using proper technique.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available if you already have severe damage from overbrushing. Ask us for more information at your next appointment! AVOCADO AND CUCUMBER Cold Soup Ingredients • Olive oil • 2 medium ripe • 1 lemon, juiced • ½ cup cold water • 1 clove garlic

definitely doesn’t only apply to teachers. I remember one time during college. I was in a four-year dental hygiene program, studying to be a hygienist. That was just the plan. One day, my mom asked me, “Why don’t you go on and become a dentist?” When I thought about it, I didn’t really have an answer. I just hadn’t considered that possibility before. Years later, here I am running my own dental practice. Looking back, it’s clear to me that I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today without the support of dozens of teachers and mentors. From my blond-haired kindergarten teacher to my lovely mother, I’m grateful for them all.

2. Coat halved avocados with lemon juice to avoid browning. Brush olive oil over avocados, cucumber, spring onions, and jalapeno. Oil grill while hot. 3. Grill vegetables until everything is grilled or slightly charred. Once grilled, remove and place on platter to cool. 4. Chop grilled veggies and puree with lemon juice, cold water, garlic, salt, and black pepper. 5. Once smooth, portion soup into bowls and refrigerate to cool before serving. 6. Garnish with toasted cubed bread, avocados, spring onions, chives, lemon zest, or a drizzle of olive oil, if desired.

On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! In the last 100 years, only 14 solar eclipses were visible from the U.S., and none have occurred in the new millennium. This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called the Great American Eclipse. If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence. Columbia, South Carolina Need a place to watch the eclipse in the southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South Carolina! The state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality, with the duration of totality lasting a full 2½ minutes. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those who don’t want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have a lot to do even when the eclipse is over. Sandhills, North Platte, Nebraska In the heartlands, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western VIEWOF A LIFETIME

Nebraska. The August weather in this area has a reputation for ideal conditions for watching the eclipse, so there’s less of a chance cloudy skies will block your view. With wide-open skies,

low rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot. The Museum of Idaho, Idaho Falls, Idaho Why not view the eclipse from an official NASA broadcast station? The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations, and special exhibits as you prepare to watch the total eclipse with NASA scientists. A total solar eclipse is an event like nothing you’ve ever witnessed before. Be sure to visit the official website of the Great American Eclipse at greatamericaneclipse.com for everything you need to know about this once-in-a- lifetime sight!
