Meet Philip Nimmo Philip Nimmo grew up in the seaside town of San Clemente in Southern California. The beach was his backyard, and nature was his muse. Today, you can see echoes of those organic influences in his choices, from the agates that mark his fire screens to how he layers shadows and light.

About Philip Nimmo
Although Nimmo was a gifted student who enjoyed all subjects, he has always had a penchant for art and immersed himself in art electives in high school. In one leatherworking class, he made a satchel accented by hand-hammered copper detail. Nearly 50 years later, he has held true to those early instincts, and you can see echoes of those same design elements in his furniture today.

Nimmo attended the University of Southern California to study business management, but he transitioned to join staff at the then-newly formed Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, where he studied under the legendary Horst Schulze. Nimmo quickly worked his way up to become the corporate director of banquets.

Nimmo began working as an interior designer, and soon he was attracting big-name clients, such as singer-songwriter Randy Newman. It was Newman’s fireplace that sparked Nimmo’s product line. When Nimmo couldn’t find the right screen for Newman’s odd-shaped fireplace, Nimmo decided to create his own. But a happy accident led to the fire screen being made in the wrong size. A showroom in West Hollywood offered to carry the extra screen — it sold instantly off the floor. The showroom wanted more, and the Philip Nimmo line quickly grew to include representation at multiple showrooms across the country. Soon, Nimmo was designing other fire screens and iron tools, and he began to expand his designs into other forms: sofas, cabinets, tables, lighting. The full line was born.
Today, a staple in Nimmo’s furniture line is the Newman Sofa , originally custom- designed for the Newman household.
It comes in all wood, with iron accents, as a sectional and as a chair.

Nimmo’s ironwork is the heart of his line and encompasses iron, brass and bronze in various finishes (gilded or painted, oxidized or polished, oil rubbed, hammered, textured, plated, you name it). The woodwork (typically walnut, sycamore and oak, although Nimmo can work with any wood) is bespoke — it’s truly benchmade with no compromises. Every piece of furniture is handmade around the Los Angeles area and comes signed and numbered. The majority of his line showcases metal accents that pay homage to Nimmo’s iron roots.

This fire screen was inspired by iron gates Nimmo saw in Italy. He was enamored by the mesmerizing circles and elegant black design.
The word “fire” stands out red hot and stylish on this unique fire screen.
This fire screen taps into Nimmo’s organic, primitive design roots. Consider it tribal herringbone, with imperfect spacing to create a handcrafted, artistic feeling.
This fire screen is sinuous and sultry. As the name suggests, the natural inspiration for this creation was a snake, or serpent.

Beautiful, multi-colored agate slices adorn this stone-centric companion inspired by the Goccia Fire Screen. Fittingly, pietra means “stone” in Italian. Each stone is hand- selected, making every fire screen unique and always one-of-a-kind. This is one of Nimmo’s signature pieces.
The Forte Andirons were designed to be strong and solid enough to stand on their own, making them the ideal accent for a glass firescreen or a fireplace without a screen.
The design of these andirons will transport you to Morocco. The arabesque designs were inspired by Nimmo’s time in Marrakech.

This four-door cabinet made out of walnut features a bronze “Cruz” pattern — one of Nimmo’s signature designs. The hand-hammered detailing is a direct descendant of Nimmo’s first design nearly 50 years ago. This cabinet is fresh, unique and couture, and the metalwork is reflective and flashy — but naturally so.
You can see Nimmo’s signature drops (Goccia means “drop” in Italian) accenting this stunning cabinet. Unique agate slices highlight the front of this stunning cabinet. For added drama, you can illuminate this cabinet from the interior, which makes it appear to magically glow.

The signature Forma Dining Table, with a gold gilded interior, was the first dining table Nimmo created. It seems to magically glow from within; when people see it, they often ask where the light is coming from. It has a free-form sculpture base, with organic shapes that play with positive and negative patterns. The iconic table comes in various sizes.
The initial vision was simple: a dining table with a bronze lip. But then Nimmo spiced up the design with several different embellishments. The asymmetrical, rounded version of the Eau Dining Table provides a slightly softer feeling than the Cruz option.

Inspired by an antique table, Nimmo echoed some of its best elements and then mixed them with new concepts. Crafted out of iron with a walnut top, this table feels both timeless and fresh. The Nato Coffee Table also comes in bronze, which shimmers from the hand-hammering of the metal. When the light catches this table, it glows as if there is a light inside.

The Brazo’s arms are an exaggerated design taken from the Dante Chair. Then, inspired by his Cruz (cross) design, Nimmo added a stunning, hand-hammered bronze accent on the back — like jewelry for furniture. This chair is aesthetically pleasing from all angles.

The Martin chair was inspired by a 1940s French chair that Nimmo discovered in an antique shop. His version is larger and includes metal work; the bar in the back of the chair is hand-hammered bronze. This comfortable chair is meant to embrace guests for long dinner parties.

The Ellittico design is one of Nimmo’s signatures. While designing, he was envisioning interlocking circles — like a loose chain. The side table comes in a variety of finishes. Also available as a focal table.

Nimmo’s best-known piece, the Newman Sofa, has a ’70s organic feel. While the body of the sofa is walnut, what sets this piece apart is the juxtaposition of the bronze base. From every angle, this sofa is truly a piece of art.
In Philip Nimmo style, the metalwork makes the Dante Sofa stand out. Its magic is in the beautiful, bronze legs, as well as the wood trim detailing where the cushions hit the back of the piece. This sofa’s swooping arms add a graceful curve to the otherwise masculine design.

The asymmetrical shape of the Equis Bench gives it a unique, sculptural effect. And the detailing adds to the artistry. Notice the white piping on the upholstery of the seat. It creates a cross shape, in honor of Nimmo’s signature Cruz (cross) design.
Notice how the x-shaped base of this bench is not centered. The Torino is an extension of Nimmo’s play with triangles and his own unique spin on the obvious.

This wooden barrel chair was inspired by the Italian word for “book.” It is the quintessential library chair, perfect for cuddling up with a book. Notice the elegant curved details on the base. They create an optical illusion; where the back hits the floor, it acts as a third leg.
The bronze metalwork on the base is key to the Dante Chair. Note the beautiful wood trim detailing where the cushions hit the back of the chair. This chair’s swooping arms add a graceful curve to the otherwise masculine design. Also available as a high- back and a swivel chair.
This is a bed meant for lounging. Nimmo wanted to create a bed with arms on it, similar to a sofa. It gives “falling asleep on the sofa” a whole new meaning.
Une, which means “one” in French, was named after its single back leg that is casted in bronze. With leg detailing, the Une Chair is just as beautiful to view from the front as the back. It’s also extraordinarily comfortable.

Inspired by a stack of stones of various sizes, the Ramona feels nature-inspired but also artistic. The Filo, which can be used as a focal or dining table, has free-form legs with a glass top. Every table is different from the next. Artisans bend each metal piece individually to create a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art. The Filo design also comes as side tables and an ottoman.
A fascination with curves motivated the design of the Cali Lounge. Outdoor furniture is often hard-edged and angular, but the Cali Lounge Chair feels softer and graceful. This comfortable chair is available with or without arms.
The Opio Side Table matches the Opio seating options. These tables have silver travertine tops with exquisite hand-hammering details.
Nimmo was looking for handmade outdoor furniture when he designed the Opio line — and his signature, hand-hammered iron is the perfect detail on this graciously scaled chair. These pieces feature a great amount of beautiful workmanship. The Opio line can be mixed and matched to fit your space and needs. It spans a sectional, lounge chair, bench and chaise, all of which can be accented by one of three different patterns: the Cruz (cross), Goccia (raindrops) and Ramona (ovals). The details are applied to the back of the chairs, so they’re beautiful from every angle. The Ramona design, shown here, was inspired by stacked stones in a river. The details are applied to the back of the chairs, so they’re beautiful from every angle.
