9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get. thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou «halt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, be hold, angels came and ministered unto him. LESSON T E X T : Matt. 3:13 to 4:11. GOLDEN T E X T : “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matt. 4:10). DEVOTIONAL READING: Luke 4:16-21. Outline and Exposition . I. His B a p t is m (3:13-17) S HE TIME'note in verse 13 is roused the entire country. In »this ministry John the Baptist was closing the Old Testament economy, for “the law and prophets were until John” (Lk. 16:16). The event of Jesus’ baptism marked His entrance into His public ministry. He had waited eight een years at Nazareth for this hour to come. Now the testimony was com plete; and the One promised by the law and prophets was at hand. Thus it was inciimbent upon John, as rep resenting the whole Old Testament, to introduce'the One promised; and it was incumbent upon Jesus, as being the One whom John heralded, to en ter upon His saving work. E v e r y thing was ready; then came Jefeus to be baptized. The baptism of Jesus was “ to fulfil all righteousness” (v. 15). That is, Jesus came to dedicate ’ Himself, to formally accept the offices for which He had been divinely chosen; pro phet, priest, and king. These offices demanded complete self-surrender to God and identification with sinners. His self-surrender was immediately followed by the Father’s acceptance of that which was surrendered, and by His consecration of Jesus to the of fices named. There came the ex pression of God’s delight in Him, for He was the first man upon whom God could look with complacency and say, “I am well pleased.” There was. also the equipment for His service, by the coming upon Him of the Holy Spirit

(cf. Isa. 61:1, 2; Acts 10:38). Finally there was God’s acknowledgment of sonship: “Thou art my beloved son” (cf. v. 17). II. . H is T e m p t a t io n (4:1-11) "Then was Jesus led . . . to be tempted” (v.l). Here again the time note is important In Jesus’ baptism, His own purpose was being revealed. In His temptation, the purpose of the Holy Spirit was being accomplished. From the moment of His baptism when the Holy Spirit came upon Him, and throughout His life on earth, thè Lord Jesus was wholly under the control and guidance of the Spirit. It is not meant that Christ did not have the Holy Spirit before His bap tism. But, in a new capacity, He be came submissive to H im f o r the purpose of man’s redemption. In His baptism, the Lord Jesus . yielded Himself for God’s service, be lieved the declaration of His own sonship, and accepted the offices God had prepared for Him. In the tempta- ' tion, Satan attempted to stop the service, destroy the assurance of sonship, and dispute the moral right of Jesus to the office. Satan could not disputé Jesus’ legal right, nor His personal right, but he could and did challenge His moral right. . The first attack was concerning the Word Of God; Jesus was invitéd to act independently—a temptation to unbelief or doubt. The second was- concerning the ways of God; the Son was urged to act by sight—to test God, a temptation to presumption. The third was concerning the will of God; and Jesus was asked to act ahead of God—a temptation to take an apparently easy way to the throne. The result of these temptations proved beyond all question the moral right of Jesus to the offices He as sumed. He stood victorious where the first man had failed. Every test was placéd upon Him. He felt the weight of all that His people ever would bear. In it all, He was the sinless One, not only in the sense that He did not sin, but in the sense that He could not sin. If He could sin then, He could sin now, and some day He might sin —thus destroying confidence in the ■efficacy of His atonement. The secret of His victory is to be ours also today. He had one weapon, the sword of the S p i r i t. He had one method: full dependence on, con fidence in, and obedience to' God. Following Him, we also will be triumphant. Points and Problems 1. "Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteous ness” (3:15). Why did Jesus insist on

important: “Then c o m e t h Jesus...to be baptized.” The preaching of John the- Baptist had
