than things material. Our Lord has been speaking about the Father’s care for the material needs of His children. The assurance now comes that they who give God His rightful place in the life will have their material needs met. Many have reversed the order of the text. Material things are considered first. It is not the teach ing of Jesus that it is wrong to be concerned about the provision for our homes, and the welfare of our bodies, but His teaching is that the things of God should occupy first place. 2. "For this is the law and the prophets" (Matt. 7 vl2). What is the law and the prophets as referred to here? The so-called golden rule as the context reveals! Hence we see that the golden rule is not the gospel. It is. hqt the way of salvation. The fundamental facts of the gospel are. not to be found in it at all (cf. 1 Cor. 15:1-4). It is rather the summary of the Old Testament law and the pro phets regarding righteousness. Our Lord , gives this exhortation to be lievers because in Him they have the necessary love by which alone this rule can be kept. The golden rule therefore does not save, but its opera tion shoiild be witnessed as the fruit of the redeemed. 3. "Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Matt. 7:16). The •preceding verse makes it clear that the reference here is to f a l s e teachers. False teachers sooner or later will reveal their true character in the fruit they bear. An application may be made also tp all Christians. For our Lord says, “Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit’’ (v. 17). Those who are bom again will naturally bring forth good fruit. This is so because they have the nature of the good tree within them. We are plainly told what is the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. A truly born-again soul will bear'this fruit. Not all Christians bear the fruit in fhe same measure. Some Christians need more cleansing and a fuller dedi cation that they may bear more fruit. But every disciple of Christ bears some fruit. The question is: How mu,ch? Golden Text Illustration M atthebl -6 t )3 A Christian master in Paris, offered his four employees the choice of a Bible or of fifteen francs as a New Year’s gift. The first three took the money,- but the fourth, a lad of thirteen or fourteen years of age, said, “As you say the Book is good, I will take it and read it to my mother.” When he opened the Book, what was his surprise to find inside it a forty franc piece!
