JUNE 2020

MY FAMILY’S TRADITIONAL SUMMER TURKEY DINNER

One of the meals I absolutely love and request whenever someone asks me what I want to eat is a traditional turkey dinner. Since I was a kid, my family has cooked up the entire meal all year, but we especially enjoyed this dinner during the summer. Growing up, my family always went up north during the summer to visit my great aunt who lived in a cottage by a lake. She was my grandma’s sister and didn’t have any kids of her own, so we’d go almost every 2–3 weeks and sometimes for the major holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the Fourth of July. As we grew older and had summer sports and other activities, we went less frequently. Then, my parents moved into a house on a lake down here, and we stopped going altogether. While we didn’t have our turkey meal every single time we went to the lake house, we would save it for special occasions and holidays — sometimes for the Fourth of July or a last hurrah just before school started up again in August. My dad would go buy a turkey, fire up the Weber charcoal grill, and cook the turkey whole, which took about three hours. Meanwhile, everyone else would prepare the mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing — the whole shebang. My favorite part of the meal, apart from the turkey, was the mashed potatoes. Once the turkey was

finished, we’d sit down and enjoy the meal together, no matter how hot it was at the time. We cooked it the same way for all our holidays. Having grown up with it my whole life, I thought having a turkey dinner was just part of the summer experience and figured everyone did, too. As I became an adult, I found it’s entirely not “normal.” A few times I’ve mentioned cooking a turkey on the grill, everyone looked at me strangely. I didn’t know there was any other way to cook a turkey until after I was married. Over the years, several people have made speculations about our turkey tradition, such as “You must use a pretty large grill.” Actually, I’ve always thought we use a regular-size grill. It’s not a contraption a crazy uncle threw together with scraps from the backyard; it’s just a grill anyone can pick up at the store. After my wife and I got married, my family used my next birthday as a chance to give me my very own Weber charcoal grill, and I still have it. It’s sitting in the garage, but I only use it to cook turkeys. Even though this is my favorite meal, I can’t make it on my own. I haven’t taken good notes and I’m not that great of a cook, but my dad is always willing to come over and help me the dinner whenever

we’re planning it. Over the past few years, I’ve done it a couple of times for the holidays but not on my own just yet. Dad came over a few hours early so the two of us could get the turkey on the grill and get everything else ready. Since I’ve been married, I’ve had oven- cooked turkey, but I think grilled turkey still tastes the best. The grill makes the meat more flavorful, and while we might all think our way is the best, in this case, I know I’m right.

A Voyage for the Sounds of Earth RECORD YOUR OWN AUDIO TIME CAPSULE

PROMOTING SAFETY AND HEALTH DURING THESE TROUBLED TIMES

In 1977, a NASA committee led by esteemed astrophysicist and author Carl Sagan set out to record images and sounds from around Earth, which were then enshrined in two copper records that included music, languages, and natural sounds from around the world. The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft carry these records, and since the ‘70s, they have explored space and routinely sent transmissions to Earth about what they have encountered. As Sagan said of the Voyager mission, “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced spacefaring civilizations in interstellar space, but the launching of this ‘bottle’ into the cosmic ‘ocean’ says something very hopeful about life on this planet.” We may still not have definitive answers about extraterrestrial life, but that doesn’t prevent us from thinking about what we might want to tell others about life on Earth. So, why not make your own recording? RECORD YOUR OWN MESSAGE Take inspiration from the Voyager mission by setting out to create a recorded message with your family that can serve as a time capsule for others to enjoy for years to come. As a starting point, ask your kids what they would want to tell future generations or interstellar travelers. What does life on Earth look like to them? Your messages don’t have to be solely futuristic, either. You can record a message to loved ones and have fun sharing it with them. Think of a family member or friend who could use a pick- me-up and create a recording just for them. KEEP IT SIMPLE Most phones and computers have an audio recorder app, and this should be all you need to make a recording. Start by creating your message. You can improvise or write a script beforehand. Then, use your phone or computer to record it. This file can be shared on different platforms and sent to the people you’d like to hear your message.

We can all agree that the last few months have been incredibly hectic here in Michigan. Not only did many businesses close for a few weeks due to a stay-at-home order but people also had to practice social distancing and self-isolation. Things were hard, and our team at Janet Davis Cleaners were no strangers to this. Although we were labeled as an essential business, we decided it would be better for our team and our customers that we voluntarily closed our doors for a couple of weeks in March and April, so we did. Our hope was to reduce the number of times people came in contact with each other, promote safety and health, and encourage others to do the same. By the time mid- April came around, we reopened but only with a small crew. Since opening our doors again, we’ve been working hard to continue giving our customers the quality service they’ve come to expect. In a situation like this, being stuck in our homes all day, every day, it’s normal for things like laundry to slip our minds. However, you might be surprised how pulling on a fresh T-shirt improves your mental state. Having freshly laundered clothes stirs your motivation, improves self-confidence, and just makes you feel better. Now that things are returning to normal somewhat, give us a call or come right in. As a fifth-generation family-owned business, we understand the importance of safety, cleaning, and sanitization. The cleaning process we use is effective against viruses as confirmed by both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute (DLI). So, get caught up on your laundry with our help! Our services are open to you and your family. If you know anyone who wants to freshen up with the best cleaning services in Michigan, send them our way. Whether they need their work clothes or household items cleaned, we are here to help.

Have fun with this project and think of it as your chance to tell others what life on Earth means to you.

The long-awaited summer is finally here! As we slowly but surely return to our normal lives, people can’t wait to put on their favorite summer wear and get out of the house more than ever. However, before you pull out your sleeveless tops, short-sleeved knits, shorts, and capris, take some time to store your winter wear properly. SUMMER IS COMING TIME TO PUT AWAYWINTER ATTIRE

STORE IT PROPERLY

When it comes to storing your clothes, you can do this effectively in a number of ways. We recommend you stay away from using cardboard boxes for storage as they are susceptible to water damage and can attract bugs. Instead, use sealed plastic totes or clear bins as these can be tightly sealed and allow you to see what you’re storing. Additionally, store similar clothes together and make sure to label each bin to help you stay organized and find things easily when fall and winter come again. One of the best storage methods is a cedar chest or whole cedar closet, though it isn’t necessary. If you have either of these, and you haven’t already, make sure to lightly sand the sides of it to release its earthy aroma, the phenols that repel moths and other troublesome pests. If a cedar chest sits untouched for a year, it won’t do anything for your clothes.

PUT IT AWAY CLEAN

Your first step is to clean everything . To keep your clothes in pristine condition, your items should not be worn once before being placed in storage so moths don’t go after it. Contrary to popular belief, moths don’t like the taste of fabric of any kind; instead, they like — this is gross — the dead skin particles and food debris left on the clothes. If you eliminate, not just reduce, this lure with a thorough cleaning, your clothes will be safe. So, before you store sweaters and put your suits away, make sure they go away clean. Try to remember the last time you had your business wear and other winter attire cleaned — before all the chaos of the spring. If you’re not sure when the last time was, now is a great time to bring it in to ensure the moths don’t feast on your items over the summer.

With all that taken care of, you’re ready to enjoy the summer!

TURN YOUR VACATION INTO A STAYCATION

CREATE A ‘FAMILY MUSEUM’ Many vacations include an educational aspect in order to enrich our understanding of the place we’re visiting, and museums are a great way to accomplish that. If you’re confined to the house, then teach your kids about your own knowledge and interests and encourage them to get creative and make their own contributions, too. Have everyone create art, take photos, or write about their prized possessions. Display these masterpieces around your home and let their creators take you on a tour. Learning more about one another builds meaningful bonds. BRING YOUR TRIP HOME You probably chose your original vacation destination in order to experience new and different cultures and activities. But just because you’re no longer traveling to that location doesn’t mean you can’t

Vacations provide opportunities for families to spend time together in a relaxed environment, get away from the routines of everyday life, and create meaningful memories. If you’ve recently had to cancel a trip but still want to create the experience of a vacation for your family, then a staycation is just what you need. TRANSFORM YOUR BACKYARD When you’re trying to recreate a vacation, the outdoor areas of your home present a variety of possibilities. You can turn a sandbox into a relaxing beach, complete with a kiddie pool “ocean.” If you have trees, then set up a zip line or obstacle course. You can even stimulate summer brains with a scavenger hunt around the backyard with hidden clues in the dirt or bushes. The ultimate prize can be something you would have purchased on your original vacation, like a souvenir you can find online.

experience some of what it has to offer! Research popular local cuisine, activities, and history of the area, then create ways to experience them with your family. Cook a traditional meal, recreate a scenic location through photographs, or share a story about local lore and history. Your changed plans will no longer feel like a missed opportunity. Staying at home doesn’t mean your family can’t have the fun of a vacation. All it takes is a little creativity and innovation to build an experience that will bring your family closer together.
