So along come October and November, and with them, the prospect of cooler temperatures and less humidity. For many (this writer included), it’s one of my favorite times of year.

We may not be big city yet (which we may never be nor want to be), but we’re in no way a ghost town anymore. We’re growing up, hip and cool in so many ways — making us an even cooler place to live, work and play, as individuals or families or yes, even companies — as this month’s articles on the amazing Marcus Jansen, the awesome downtown “Walks” and the interactive, evolving Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge all demonstrate. Can flip flops, shorts and t-shirts coexist in peace and harmony with designer fashions, stretch limos and buzzworthy nights out? I say yes — and how cool would that be?

When you hear Marcus Jansen speak, you’re immediately struck by his calm, almost peaceful and genuinely friendly tone. The more you listen to him, the more you sense a man who wears words like warmth, grace and humility quite comfortably. Nowhere in his language, or attitude, or demeanor

professional artist, with paintings that currently sell for up to $100,000, Marcus Jansen has arrived. “What’s happening now is really the height of my career,” he quietly states.
“You labor all these years to get your work seen and discussed, and suddenly you’re on a huge, huge platform,” he says. “These Jansen solo shows are my first, and for any painter that’s a highlight — most don’t get solo shows in museums until they’re dead. Yes, I’m pretty excited about this.”
The “now” Jansen speaks of is something of a perfect artistic storm. This December, SKIRA

Jansen’s artistic career began at the age of six, when his painting of a lion was selected from a student competition to appear in an exhibit at the Lever House in Manhattan. Something of a world traveler with a German father and West Indies mother, Jansen returned to New York in his teens and was immediately drawn to the graffiti art movement of the 80s when he met celebrated graffiti artist WEST ONE. He served in the first Gulf War in the Airborne Units in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before it was back to Europe — then back to the U.S. permanently in 1999 where, in New York City, he sold his art on the streets.
who were living here. “We loved the area, we loved the beaches and we were attracted to it all immediately,” he recalls. He works out of Unit A Studio in downtown Fort Myers, and is a regular stop on the monthly Art Walk event (read more about Art Walk later in this issue). According to Jansen, things really began “happening” for him in 2007, when his work appeared at the Art Basel Festival in Miami, one of the world’s top modern and contemporary art showswhere approximately 300 artists and galleries from around the world exhibit. “That’s when I was launched if you will on the international scene,” he says, “when I started doing my very large works” that often exceed 10 feet in height or width.

But what really sets Marcus Jansen apart is not the size of his art, but the style. Some have called it urban expressionism, others neo-expressionism, but if you ask Jansen, he tries “to shy away from labeling my work. Labels are interpreted differently by different people. I just like the fact that people are insecure in where to place me. That must mean I’m doing something interesting; it’s good not to fit.” And although you may not be able to typecast Jansen’s art, he’s clearly got things to say with it. “My message, if there is one, is more commentary on the global climate we’re in — politically, socially, economically — and the impact is has on our global environment. There’s no dictating in my paintings. I like to challenge people on what “I like to challenge people on what they believe or might not believe. That’s what being an artist is all about, communicating with the audience.”

Bud Nocera is a Florida tourism professional with a resume that few can rival. Following a three- year stint as Director of Sales for the Greater Jacksonville Convention & Visitors Bureau to launch his career, Nocera was chosen in 1983 to be the first Executive Director of the Lee County Tourism Development Council and the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau. Some 13 years later, Nocera became part of an executive team of travel and tourism marketing leaders who created VISIT FLORIDA, the state’s official destination marketing organization, where he served as both Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer for the next 11 years. Today, Bud Nocera is Executive Director of the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, a position he’s held since 2012 and one that he obviously enjoys greatly. Each issue, “Take Five” poses five questions to a community leader or personality that have not been shared in advance. Here, Bud Nocera discusses the joys of travel, tourism and hospitality marketing in the State of Florida — on a macro scale, and one-on-one with visitors.

1 How’s business? Fort Myers Beach has had a remarkable two years — peak season, summer season, shoulder seasons have all been very strong. Lots of smiles, but the trick now is to keep it going. 2 3 4 You were part of a group that helped create VISIT FLORIDA, arguably the most respected destination marketing organization in America. What were those early days like? Back at the time we were building VISIT FLORIDA, I had an analogy that worked well: We were designing and building a jumbo jet while at the same time we were navigating it at 30,000 feet with 400 passengers in the back who needed to get to their destination. You also led the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau. You must be proud of the contributions you’ve made to both organizations. I’m very proud of both organizations and it’s much like being a parent. It’s wonderful to be able to sit back and watch what your kids accomplish now that they’re grown. And now you’re the champion for Fort Myers Beach. How is that? This is perhaps the most fun job of my career. It is absolutely wonderful to be part of a small community and to be able to make a difference with an organization like this Chamber of Commerce. It’s one-on-one with business owners who are truly owner- operators. It’s being able to be in a position where I can sit in the information trailer and talk to visitors and provide them with good information on the destination. It’s the ability to be hands on, rather than pushing paper; it’s nowhere near the stress of running a corporation with an $80 million budget and 120 employees. It’s actually very fun and I enjoy it immensely. Pitch me on vacationing on Fort Myers Beach. You’re gonna love it a lot. First of all, it’s an absolutely gorgeous beach, nice and wide with sugar-fine sand. There are accommodations to suit all budgets from large resorts to bed and breakfasts. We offer a wide variety of great dining experiences, from fine dining to pubs right on the beach. At sunset it’s pretty easy to find an outdoor restaurant with live music and great margaritas. And did I mention the dolphin cruises and fishing? We are lucky to have Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel-Captiva to offer visitors a wide variety of both things to do and rest and relaxation. You’re going to have a great vacation here. 5

For downtown Fort Myers, the term “T.G.I.F.” has taken on a whole new meaning thanks to Friday’s fun-tastic walks. As you enjoy an evening walking the streets of downtown Fort Myers today, there’s an energy in the air that’s almost palpable. Restaurants are buzzing, watering holes are hopping, shops are cha-chinging and people from all walks — young or old, couples or large groups — are loving it. It may be hard to believe, but less than 10 years ago, downtown Fort Myers was almost a ghost town after hours. The amazing renaissance has been led by the Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency and Don Paight, Executive Director, points to three decisions that mark today’s success: the downtown street scape project; partnership with the River District Alliance; and the creation of a calendar-year full of special events, most notably Art Walk and Music Walk — each held on a specific Friday night of the month. “Collectively, the estimated attendance for the 50 events the River District Alliance markets annually is 175,000,” he notes. “The Walks have been a huge success, generating crowds and revenue on a year- round basis. Since we began, we’ve had over 65 new businesses move into downtown — retailers, restaurants, entertainment. What’s also unique is that with the exception of three chains, all of our

downtown businesses are locally owned and often owner operated. People love it, and keep coming back, and that generates more growth.”

Following the success of Art Walk, Music Walk was established in 2010 and has proven to be another huge hit for the River District Alliance. Patsy French, Chairman of the Committee for Music Walk, explains that the third Friday of every month is filled with the sounds of “almost 40 musicians, and my goal is more — more musicians, more genres, and more younger children involved, too. I want music everywhere!” The fact is, there’s already a lot of music to enjoy — amped electric guitarists, a tight band covering classic rock and doing it well, two young girls on violin, a 50s-era
Now in its eighth season, Art Walk was the first walk created by the River District Alliance. Claudia Goode, Curator for Arts for ACT and RDA member, believes it was the “catalyst that launched the rebirth of downtown.” Art Walk consists of 13 studios to visit by foot or free trolley (6 PM–10 PM) and attracts an estimated 3,000 fans each month. Goode explains that what makes this Walk so popular is that “you have the unique opportunity to meet the actual artists whose work hangs on the walls. It’s the only time really you can talk with them in one night.”
