Sunnyside Shines Sunnyside Shines e ff orts have focused largely on business recovery, including access to loans and grants, and have also worked to build the online presence of their businesses. Sunnyside Shines celebrated their merchants and their neighborhood, and that brought neighbors safely together. They are especially grateful that these activities were largely in observation of the Latino community. These activities brought hope and vibrance to their neighborhood when it was needed most. These activities included a pop-up market featuring 15 local

artisans and makers, a food court o ff ering foods from various Latino traditions from three di ff erent vendors, live music entertainment and dance demonstrations, arts workshops, including an ojo de Dios workshop for all ages, and samplings of foods from four local restaurants specializing in Latino foods. Lastly, they also hosted a tabling event where four neighborhood organizations, sta ff ed by personnel fluent in both English and Spanish and o ff ering assistance on housing issues, immigration issues, access to cultural programming, and 2020 Census information.

Theatre For a New Audience

With the Foundation’s generous support, the Theatre provided its in-classroom programs that introduce classic drama and the art of playwriting in New York City Public Schools to more than 1,200 students and teachers. Many thanks to The Ponce De Leon Foundation for helping to make this work possible.

In the 2022-2023 Season, Theatre for a New Audience continued its nearly four- decade-long partnership with the New York City Department of Education by providing its two 13-week arts in education programs—World Theatre Project (WTP) and New Voices Project (NVP) —to students and teachers throughout New York City. The programs served 1,232 students and 41 teachers in 47 classrooms at 13 public schools. Schools were located in neighborhoods that are home to diverse student populations in the Bronx (Belmont), Brooklyn (Bay Ridge, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bensonhurst, Canarsie, East Flatbush, Greenpoint), Manhattan (Chelsea, Lower East Side, Upper West Side, West Village), and Queens (College Point, Long Island City). According to the most recently compiled data by the Department of Education, student demographics at the schools the Theatre served in the 2022-2023 Season were 30%Hispanic, 30% White, 25% Black, 10% Asian, and 5% Multiracial/Other.
