UMEZ/BRISC The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation undertook broad outreach and promotion to bring awareness of the UMEZ Hybrid Microloan Program.Funding was used to o ff set expenses for advertising and content development of the programs to reach residents of Upper Manhattan. The UMEZ Hybrid Microloan Program assists Upper Manhattan small
businesses and nonprofits whose normal operations were disrupted by COVID-19. Small businesses and nonprofits that are approved for a hybrid microloan can obtain a five-year term loan equal to up to 20% of gross annual revenue (or 20% of annual operating budget in the case of nonprofits) or $50,000, whichever is less. UMEZ will convert into a grant 25% of the loan amount for borrowers meeting the loan-to-grant conversion requirements. The advertisement campaign for the UMEZ Hybrid Microloan program is targeted in Central Harlem,Washington Heights, and Inwood, using local papers to promote the program.
Union City Music Project
Union City Music Project (UCMP) is a bilingual educational organization that uses music as a vehicle for social change for low-income, primarily Latinx, children and youth in Hudson County, NJ through low-costafter- school instrumental and vocal instruction and regular
public performances of UCMP's Children’s and Advanced Orchestras and Chorus. Through orchestral music training, UCMP’s After School Program is improving their students’ school attendance, classroom behavior, and reading and math scores so they can move through each grade, graduating from high school.
UCMP has continued to provide 130 students with six hours/week of music classes. UCMP has not only retained 100 pre-Covid students ages 3-to-18-years old and 14 teachers (97% retention), but also added 30 more students from their waiting lists to their Jan – June 2022 pre-school Paper Orchestra and school-aged After School Programs.To improve UCMP students’ social skills and academic performance through music education and thereby encourage them to do well and stay in school.
