Mainau Birch Panel by EGGER
Words Brett Winchester Photography Tim Allen
Offering a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to birch plywood, EGGER’s Mainau Birch is made in Austria and supplied through ForestOne. The classic light wood- grain look is a versatile choice that caters to many contem- porary design needs. Aligning ForestOne and EGGER’s sustainability goals, Mainau Birch panels boast numerous benefits including a negative carbon footprint (-13.8kg CO 2 /m 2 ), Blue-Angel low VOC certification and anti-microbial properties as standard. This beautiful décor mimics the characteristics of Birch Plywood right down to the realistic look and feel of EGGER’s multiplex edging. For additional versatility, Mainau Birch is offered with various substrate options including Eurodekor® panels, Flammex fire-rated panels and lightweight Eurolight® panels, each with their own properties to suit specific design needs. The Mainau Birch Eurodekor® range is available in three different thicknesses (12, 18 and 25 millimetre) for the appropriate application. It's consistent in colour, defect-free and will not cup or bow, making it the perfect solution for all joinery requirements. Unlike plywoods, the Mainau Birch Eurodekor® is a pre-finished MFC board that requires no additional coating or treatment.
As an extension to the range, Mainau Birch is also available in a Flammex option, which is fire-rated for use in wall and ceiling linings where Group 1 is required. Seen in the Centre for Adult Education by Individual Design and Construction (review the project case study on page 54), the Mainau Birch Flammex creates a modern aes- thetic while complying with public space regulations in accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC). Whether Eurodekor® or Flammex, the larger sheet size allows all panels to cater for floor-to-ceiling installations and offers a more efficient use of material. Where a thicker panel is required, Mainau Birch is also offered as a pre-finished panel in EGGER’s 50- millimetre Eurolight®, providing the width without the weight associated with thicker panels. Or, for a more cus- tomised option, the Mainau Birch laminate matches per- fectly in finish and colour to the Eurodekor® panels, adding flexibility in design where curved panels may be required. Regardless of the substrate used, Mainau Birch offers increased design flexibility and a classic look that replicates the look and feel of natural birch plywood. Extremely cost- effective, sustainable and easy to use for any design aes- thetic, EGGER Mainau Birch ticks all the boxes.
