CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF OUR RICH HISTORY, VISION ACHIEVEMENTS

GLLF moves into a new facility in Chamblee with an on-site clinic and optical lab, where eyeglasses begin in-house production. Special thanks to community partners like Georgia Optometric Association for providing funding to make this possible.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), Georgia Lions District 18-I, especially Eric Lu & the Chinese American Lions Club of Atlanta donate $100,000 for state-of-the-art vision equipment in Chamblee’s Harrell Vision Clinic. Thanks to Kia’s financial support, 1,724 children in Atlanta Public Schools & YMCA’s are given vision screenings - 377 are referred for exams and given VSP Vouchers courtesy of LCIF. Atlanta Business Chronicle presents Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc. with the Healthcare Hero Award.

Tom Bingham founded Georgia Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.

Lions of Georgia establish a $75,000 endowment for Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, and The Georgia Lions Eye Bank is founded at Emory.

Atlanta, Albany, and Moultrie Lions Clubs team up to donate $1,000 each to create the Foundation. The second executive director, Jim Corbett, also blind, operated the non-profit from an apartment in his building for 23 years!

A hearing aid bank is established.

Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation moves to Clairmont Road in Decatur, GA.

A mobile eye clinic is purchased, greatly increasing the number of Georgians served annually.

Name officially changes to Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc.

Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation funds the Georgia Lions Hearing Research Lab at Emory for $50,000.

Gary Stokan is named CEO and President of the Peach Bowl.

First statewide tele-optometry program launches. During “Evening in the End Zone” Peach Bowl donates $100,000 to Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation.

The State of Georgia House of Representatives honor Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation’s 75 years of service. On Oct. 8, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation announces partnership with Lions Clubs International Foundation and Johnson & Johnson, to address the growing need for vision care services for children in some of the most populated counties in Georgia through Sight For Kids.

The Peach Bowl is founded by Lion George Crumbley as a fundraiser for Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc.

The recycling eyeglass program is founded by Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation Board President Ken Massingale, a Decatur Lion. Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation now recycles more than 100,000 pairs of glasses every year.
