Eatwell! What makes a good plate?
BALANCE On the last day of Autumn 1, Year 3 were visited by nurses who talked to them about the ’Eatwell Guide’. We have been studying healthy eating during our Topic this term - ‘All About Me’. The Eatwell Guide shows how much of what we eat overall should come from each food group to achieve a healthy, balanced diet. The nurses explained that you do not need to achieve this balance with every meal, but try to get the balance right over a day or even a week. The nurses said that most of us still are not eating enough fruit and vegetables. They should make up over a third of the food we eat each day. We should aim to eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and veg each day. Choose from fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced. Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals and fi bre. We learnt about the correct portion sizes. We talked about how carbohydrates give us energy; protein helps to repair our muscles and fi sh has omega 3, which is good for our brain. Dairy food is a sources of calcium, which is good for our bones and teeth. We need some fats in our diet – but not too much!
