Did You Know?
When did littering start? Litter awareness began as early as the 1930s if not before. Actually, litter was first seen as a national problem in the mid-1950s, just as the domestic manufacturing industry began to bounce back after the Second World War. The mass production of disposable goods also produced a growing mountain of waste. When did littering become illegal in the US? According to the website of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, littering was identified as a crime in 1972. Pennsylvania was relatively early to criminalize the act, but many other states recognized it as illegal by the late seventies. Individual communities have also made efforts to control littering.
How long have humans been littering? Litter has been with humans as long as we have existed. Early man simply discarded his (or her) waste products in the countryside with no concern to their eventual fate. The word litter can be used both as a noun and as a verb. Litter is defined as something that has been disposed of improperly or without consent. Where did littering come from? Littering — or what littering means to us today — is actually a rather modern problem. It wasn’t until roughly the 1950s that manufacturers began producing a higher volume of litter-generating products and packaging made of materials like plastic.
