Let’s Talk Trash! MAY/JUNE 24
I would like to share with the kids what my Dad taught us every day: 1. It doesn’t matter if someone has $1 or 1 million, always treat them the same. 2. You are Never above any job. 3. Surround yourself with good people, work hard, put your worries in God’s hands and everything will work out. Auston & Dalton were once a kid just like you!
we have, we are the neighborhood gathering spot. As far as advantages, you can run the business the way you want without corporate pressures. All of our people are part of the HOME TEAM. However, the disadvantages, I am not sure I would call it disadvantages. I would call them challenges to be met with positive results. We have a partnership with managers who run their respective restaurants and follow our TEAM CONCEPT. Do you hire Teenagers? Absolutely! We look for go getters who can take on a project from start to finish. Who was the greatest influence in your Life? What words of wisdom would you like to share with the kids? My DAD OF COURSE. He taught us everything we needed to be successful in life.

your own restaurant, you have to first do a lot of research to find a good location, what the community wants, and more important have working experience in this business. FRANCHISE RESTAURANTS HAVE ONLY A SLIGHTLY HIGHER SUCCESS RATE THAN INDEPENDENTLY-OWNED RESTAURANTS. HAVING CHOSEN THAT LATTER OPTION, WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF OWNING YOUR OWN PLACE? Having it your way! You don’t have to answer to a big corporation who more than likely does not know what your community needs and wants. We are not a cookie cutter business; we remain flexible to meet our customers’ needs. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? Seeing a business develop from an idea into a reality. I started out with my first restaurant in 1998 named for my oldest son, Dalton’s. After seven years of a family operated restaurant, I found a growing opportunity to expand our
philosophy to additional locations. What I really love is the ability to recognize talent and promote our employees within. WHAT IS THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? When I see young people not taking their job seriously, it makes me sad that they are missing a huge opportunity to learn. 1/3 OF BUSINESSES THAT CLOSE THEIR DOORS DO SO WHILE THEY’RE STILL PROFITABLE; OWNERS OFTEN WANT OUT BECAUSE THE PRESSURE AND THE TOLL ON THEIR FAMILY LIFE IS TOO GREAT. IN FACT, A STUDY HAS SHOWN THAT A RESTAURANT OWNER’S ABILITY TO GIVE HIS BUSINESS ADEQUATE
ATTENTION WHILE BALANCING THE NEEDS OF HIS FAMILY IS A MORE IMPORTANT FACTOR IN SUCCESS THAN EVEN LOCATION. SO WHAT’S THE WORK/FAMILY/LIFE BALANCE LIKE FOR YOU? In the early years, I worked night and day until I discovered that I was micro managing. After 20 years, I have learned to trust my team and provide them with the tools to become successful! DO YOU HIRE TEENAGERS TO WORK IN YOUR RESTAURANTS? We sure do! We look for go-getters who listen and trust the process and do not take short cuts. They become part of our restaurant family!
ANY OTHER ADVICE AND TIPS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE KIDS? Always do your best and enjoy being a kid! You have a lifetime ahead of you. Be open to constructive criticism as it will help you form character and strength. Learn how to be part of a team to work together!
