It’s the reason we encourage our team members to follow their dreams through continuing education. Our paralegal, Patrick, is in the process of applying to law school, and our marketing director, Natalie, has just started her MBA program.

We also recognize that a college education is a privilege not accessible to everyone. Two years ago, this realization was the impetus for starting our scholarship program, which was inspired by three very important people. We want to give back to our community and foster learning within our neighborhoods. As you read last month, we gave out these scholarships to two deserving young people in 2018, and we look forward to continuing the tradition this year. The Frances & Earl Perry Memorial Veterans Scholarship supports aspiring veterans — and the children of veterans — who wish to further their education at the college or university level. Our hope is to enable returning soldiers or their children to pursue their educational goals. We want to help position them for success in civilian professions.The scholarship is named after my Uncle Earl and Aunt Frances. I would not be where I am today without the support and guidance of these two kind, caring people. While my mom was putting herself through law school, Uncle Earl and Aunt Frances raised me. Uncle Earl served in the military and was discharged as a disabled veteran. While I lived with him and my aunt, I saw the challenges he went through trying to get his disability insurance.That experience made me want to become a disability lawyer and represent people like Uncle Earl. The Flora Marie Jenkins Memorial Disability Scholarship awards money to aspiring individuals with disabilities who wish to further their education. It is named after my mother-in-law, Marie Jenkins. Marie died when my wife, Tina, was only 18.Though

she passed away at a young age, Marie had a positive impact on her friends, family, and anyone else she encountered throughout her lifetime. We remember her though this scholarship. As the director of marketing and intake at Marc Whitehead & Associates, Natalie focuses her talents on finding the best ways to connect with our clients. Having developed her skills while studying advertising in college and then honing them in at agencies, she’s well-versed in her role and enjoys the blend of art and science that is marketing. It’s a field Natalie has been interested in since she was a kid. “In elementary school, I’d watch TV and tell my parents that I wanted to be the person who was behind the commercials,” Natalie says. Today, she’s putting her knowledge to use and helping our clients connect with people who can help them. She says that when she saw the posting pop up at our firm, it struck her that “it fit everything I’ve ever done. Here, I get to see the whole timeline of the process. When a client comes in, I enjoy learning more about them, their struggles, and how we can help them. I see the human side of it.” Outside of work, Natalie enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, Veronica, who’s a budding gymnast. The family loves traveling and the outdoors, especially adventures that combine the two. “Our favorite place by far is Big Bend National Park in West Texas, about 10 hours from here,” Natalie says. “It has a stunning, pristine beauty. There’s no cell service, so we just get to unplug and spend time together.” In fact, when the floods hit Houston over Memorial Day weekend in 2015, the family was camping, and she says, “It took us until our drive back — when we were about two hours away and finally got cell service — to find out what had happened. We had about twenty missed calls from concerned family and friends.” When they’re not off having adventures in nature, Natalie and her family are probably watching Texas sports, especially TCU Horned Frog football. Georgia Dome was rocking after two Eddie George touchdown runs, and a field goal brought the Titans level at 16–16, with just over two minutes of play remaining. In response, Warner dropped back and found receiver Isaac Bruce for a 73-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 23–16 with 1:54 left on the clock. But the Titans weren’t done fighting. Quickly moving the ball down the field, Titans quarterback Steve McNair found himself with a third and 5 inside the Rams 30-yard line with 22 seconds left. Scrambling around and fighting off two players trying to pull him down, McNair threw the ball to Kevin Dyson at the 10-yard line. A quick timeout left six seconds on the clock, and the Titans were one play away from tying the game. What proceeded was a play that will be forever known as “the tackle.”McNair found Dyson on a quick slant, and when he caught the ball at the 4-yard line, it appeared a touchdown was imminent. Suddenly, linebacker Mike Jones wrapped the receiver up at the hips. As he fell to the ground with the ball in his hand, Dyson extended his arm, but when he hit the AstroTurf, he was 1 yard short of the goal line.The Rams had pulled off the impossible, earning their first Super Bowl title ever.
Going into the 1999 NFL season, no one expected anything from the St. Louis Rams. When starting quarterback Trent Green went down with a gruesome knee injury in the preseason, ESPNThe Magazine slated the Rams to be the worst team in the NFL that year. With few options, coach Vermeil named a virtually unknown player as his new starting quarterback, humbly stating in a press conference, “We will rally around Kurt Warner, and we’ll play good football.” Five years before his start, 22-year-old Kurt Warner was stocking shelves at a Hy-Vee grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for $5.50 an hour. However, he had amassed a whopping 16 snaps in the NFL prior to taking the reins for the 1999 season, and what proceeded to transpire on the field was utter pandemonium, giving the Rams the nickname “The Greatest Show on Turf.” This improbable season and the resulting MVP award for Warner set the stage for one of the most dramatic games in Super Bowl history. After going up 16–0 against the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, Warner and the Rams looked poised to coast on their way to the Lombardi Trophy, but the late Steve McNair and the Titans had different plans.The
