FFAC "Field & Forest" Catalog May 15, 2022

pandemic was a Zoom class offered by noted artist and art historian Leigh Culver. I have never been much interested in history of any kind, let alone art history —yes, I know, it’s a fault— but Leigh’s classes are so compelling and inspirational that even I was fascinated. This painting is both an homage to Andrew Wyeth and to Leigh’s lecture on the art of looking down on a subject. I was intrigued and excited by Wyeth’s painting The Hunter . I adore the tree and the subtle figure of the hunter. So, in my own way, I copied it. Yes, artists do that with some frequency. When I asked if I could possibly show the painting, Leigh assured me that it was appropriation in the best sense of the word and acceptable. In fact, it inspired a later lecture on appropriation, and I learned that I am in good company. I am in no way comparing myself to Wyeth. I mean, Wyeth , duh. But I like to think we share an appreciation for a beautiful, mysterious tree and a crisp fall day."
