Have you ever had that sense that a “new idea” seemed more like an “old idea” after you thought about it? Many older adults smile when they hear younger generations talking about new trends that may, in one form or another, actually have beginnings at an earlier time. Such is the case with the concept of Home Sharing, another housing option to help older adults age in place in their homes and community. As you read this article, consider if this is a new idea or something that has really been around for a long time. Home Sharing involves homeowners choosing to share and rent their homes with compatible home sharers. For home owners, sharing their homes may be a great way to continue living in their home, to enjoy companionship and receive additional income through rent. For the home sharer, there is also an opportunity to enjoy companionship along with possible financial savings. It is a win-win situation! You may be thinking at this point—so this is like an earlier time in my life when I enjoyed living with roommates? Yes! There is no reason that sharing a home is an opportunity limited to younger adults. Many older adults want to stay in their homes, yet the home is too large for one person and the house maintenance is getting to be too much. Other older adults may want to sell their homes yet wish to stay in their neighborhood and community. In either case, home sharing speaks to the comfort and familiarity of staying in a community while also branching out and trying something new through home sharing. Social connection is a substantial benefit to many engaged in home sharing. Pima Council on Aging (PCOA) is proud to announce a new program, HomeMatch Pima , a Home Sharing program made possible through the generous support of the Pima County Board of Supervisors and the City of Tucson. The program is currently under development and will officially

To assure your safety and that of others, depending on the situation with COVID-19 in our community, an event may be canceled or changed from an in-person event to a virtual event. Once registered, you will be notified regarding any such changes, should they occur, and provided with information about how to join the virtual event and additional options. Now that you have read this article, think about whether this is a new idea or something that has really been around for a long time. What do you think about trying something new yet something that is familiar in 2022? If you are not interested in home sharing at this time, perhaps you can share this information with others. The program will match interested homeowners with interested home sharers. At this time, we are asking homeowners interested in learning more about the program to complete a brief interest form. (That form can be accessed through HomeSharing.pcoa. org). Please note that homeowners must be age 60 or older to participate in our HomeMatch Pima program. We will then follow up with interested homeowners and provide more information about the next steps. Please note that HomeMatch Pima is not an emergency or crisis housing program.
