The Best Fans in theWorld A Tribute to the Patriots and Their Supporters

I know I’m not alone in savoring every season we have left with those two. At this point, their status as football legends is secure, but I don’t think they’re done writing their story just yet. Speaking of the NFL, did you know that all 32 NFL teams use the very same LightForce Class IV Deep Tissue Medical Therapy Laser that we have at the Professional Physical Therapy offices? Pretty cool, right? You know a technology works when professionals who need to recover quickly are using it. In pro football, the difference between a star player missing two games or four could decide whether or not a team makes the playoffs. With stakes that high, it’s no wonder that team therapists, physicians, and trainers having taken advantage of the laser’s ability to expedite the healing process. There are few aspects of our lives that resemble those of NFL players. But the way you recover from injury doesn’t have to be one of them. Today, at our office, you can receive the same cutting-edge treatment that the best athletes in the world do. Laser therapy may not result in you taking the field on Sunday, but it can surely help you get back in the game of enjoying daily life.

Given how dominant the Brady-Belichick era has been, it’s easy to forget that the Patriots weren’t always the most envied team in football. Before the magical 2001 season, which ended with Boston’s first major championship in decades, the Patriots were middle-of-the-road at best. In fact, they were often far worse than that. I think those hard times made our eventual success all the sweeter. As a die-hard pro football fan who’s been a Pats fan since high school, I try to keep those leaner times in perspective when people get up in arms about one regular season loss. I remember a few years ago when the Patriots lost to the Chiefs and naysayers were predicting the end of the Patriot dynasty. When we went on to win the Super Bowl that season, those proclamations rang hollow. So much about the Pats has changed over the years in addition to results on the field. The old Foxboro Stadium was nothing to write home about, especially in winter. Those old bleachers were so cold that you were in trouble if you didn’t bring something to place over them. There was certainly none of the gourmet food and family-friendly experiences offered by Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place. These days, a trip to Foxboro for a game is unrecognizable from a decade ago. Of course, a lot of the credit for that goes to the most successful quarterback and head coach tandem in football history. I know that high expectations have been the standard for over a decade in New England, but we really shouldn’t take for granted how lucky we’ve been. I mean, how many coaches and quarterbacks have the Bills and Jets burned through while we’ve had (barring injuries) no turnover whatsoever? Eventually, we’ll have to reckon with a life after TB12 and The Hoodie, but

Happy football season, everybody. Go Pats!

One of the hardest challenges of aging isn’t coping with the physical changes or new limitations associated with getting older; it’s finding new groups of people with similar interests, especially for empty nesters. Many adults build their peer networks around their children, making them the focal point of conversations with other parents in similar situations. But as children grow older and eventually leave home, parents are forced to adjust to their dwindling social lives. While some adults thrive in meeting new people, many struggle to find ways to connect with their peers. Fortunately, there are apps for that. EASY FACEBOOK FOR SENIORS The mother ship of social media can sometimes be more of a maze than a way to connect with others. Facebook took notice of this and created a simplified version of the app specifically designed for those who want to avoid all the distractions. Ease of use makes the opportunity to connect with others who have similar interests simpler than ever. OURTIME Dating in your 50s can be tricky, especially when many singles are looking for specific requirements in a partner. Some are seeking casual relationships, How to Rewind Life’s Clock Using Social Media

while others are looking for someone to grow old with. OurTime is a dating app that allows seniors to find partners with similar values, priorities, and passions. It’s a great way to find new people to share the golden years with. SKYPE You don’t have to wait for the holidays for your next group gathering; Skype allows you the opportunity to have video chats with anyone who has a smartphone. Maybe your conversation about the football game got cut short at church, or maybe you never finished your discussion at book club. Whatever the occasion, Skype gives you the option to connect with the people around you, even when you don’t feel like leaving the comfort of your house.

How to Make Halloween Healthy Any holiday centered around candy will never be a nutritionist’s dream. Think about how many calories and grams of sugar a trick-or-treater totes home, and your head might start to spin. That being said, encouraging your family to participate in a healthier Halloween doesn’t have to include secretly throwing away some of your child’s stash. A little candy in moderation never hurt anybody, so here are a few tricks to help you ensure that your children have a healthy candy intake this season. COUNT STEPS, NOT PIECES OF CANDY Any parent who’s relied on the phrase “I’ll time you” knows that children will do just about anything if they think it’s a game. Most kids make Halloween a contest based on who can get the most candy, but why not flip that competition on its head this year? Instead of counting pieces of candy, count the steps required to get them. Every smartphone includes a pedometer, so it’s very easy to track. You can even include some rewards for step milestones. DON’T ENCOURAGE A SUGAR FRENZY Once the candy has made it home, you have to decide the best way for it to be consumed. When left to their own devices, most kids will only stop

eating candy when their tummy starts to ache. It’s up to you to make sure that they eat their rewards over time rather than in a couple of marathon sessions. You may encounter some resistance at first, but your kids will be very happy when all of their friends have run out of sweets, but they still have some in reserve. OFFER A TRADE Garnishing your children’s candy is a dubious, unfair tactic, but that’s not true of asking them to trade you some. You can offer them a toy or other prize for every dozen or so pieces they are willing to part with. It allows them to earn something while limiting the junk food intake. Many dental offices also run candy buy-back programs that give the youngsters something in return for the candy they don’t want. As a bonus, this candy often goes to needy children or troops overseas.

SUCCESS STORIES

“After having surgery, I was unable to put pressure on my foot and do

everyday activities. PT helped my foot regain the strength it had lost. I owe a lot to the laser therapy I did during therapy. The laser healed the scar on the bottom of my foot, removed the numbness and sensitivity, and allowed me to bend my toe comfortably. I’m grateful that my surgeon recommended Professional Physical Therapy. The staff

“I came in for a very sore lower back that was not getting better with medication or a chiropractor. I was hoping my physical therapy would get me back on track in a limited amount of time, as I was moving out of state within six weeks of starting treatment. From Dr. Patt’s initial evaluation until my last session, I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome. I would definitely recommend Professional Physical Therapy to anyone needing physical therapy services!” –Thomas Wagstaff

COOKING OILS DECLASSIFIED

AVOCADO OIL When you need an oil to withstand high temps, this is your oil. It has a smoke point of 510 degrees, making it perfect for grilling and stir-frying. What makes avocado oil particularly unique is it can also be used as a finishing oil, like EVOO. It’s light yet resilient.

CANOLA OIL/VEGETABLE OIL A good option for high-heat cooking, baking, and frying, these utilitarian oils are completely neutral in flavor, but they’re not heart-healthy. Vegetable oil is a generic mix of oils, including soybean, canola (rapeseed), and palm oils, making it the most inexpensive cooking oil. PEANUT OIL Great for high-heat cooking, frying, and deep- frying, peanut oil has a neutral flavor, so you can easily use it in just about any dish that needs a

Not all cooking oils are created equal. Some cooking oils have distinct flavors, while others are suited for high temperatures. Every oil is unique. Here are six common oils and their best uses. EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL An often misused oil, extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) should not be used for cooking or frying. It’s simply too delicate and cannot withstand high temperatures, which can damage the flavor, ruining dishes. Instead, use it as a finishing oil — drizzle it over pasta, salad, or bread. OLIVE OIL Unlike EVOO, standard olive oil can be used for cooking and frying. It can withstand temps up to about 460 degrees. In many cases, you can use it in place of other cooking oils — just be sure you’re using plain olive oil and not EVOO. COCONUT OIL Better for baking than cooking, coconut oil is generally solid at room temperature. It can be used for some cooking, but like EVOO it doesn’t play well with high temperatures. Keep it at 350 degrees or below and use it as a butter substitute.

cooking oil. It’s also a more heart-healthy option than canola and vegetable oils.
