Message from Chris
Happy New Year!
2022 has been an incredible year for both facilities, and I am proud of you, our dedicated employees, for all you do to improve the health and well-being of our patients. Most notably, I am incredibly proud of NCB for receiving the Top Teaching Hospital designation from the Leapfrog Group. Also, Jacobi is the first public hospital to receive ACS QVP verification with the American College of Surgeons. The U.S. Navy has once again designated Jacobi as a Primary Recompression Chamber to treat U.S. Navy personnel with diving injuries. 2023 is off to a great start! I am grateful to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, U.S. representative for New York's 14th congressional district, for securing Community Project Funding. Her $845K investment will help the Stand Up to Violence program at Jacobi hire more staff and broaden the reach of the social and mental health services provided to New Yorkers affected by violent trauma. I'm excited to announce that many capital projects are coming down the pipeline to modernize the facilities and extend the continuum of quality care we provide for the Bronx residents and New Yorkers. These upcoming projects at JMC include a Wellness Center in Building 4, with a test kitchen, gym, and event space. Renovation of our postpartum units, updated ambulatory surgery suite, and an upgrade to the existing hyperbaric chamber. At NCB, the freight elevators are almost finished being updated, refurbishment of 4 ORs is in design phase, and new sprinkler systems will be installed in critical areas allowing us to expand services, to name a few of the items. I am happy to share that my 2023 New Year's Resolution is to collaborate with all of you to increase equitable access to high-quality patient-centered care for the Bronx communities we serve. Thank you all for your steadfast commitment to healthcare. I wish you health, happiness, and resilience this New Year!
Chris Mastromano

Welcome Joseph A. Borges, MD, MHA Associate Executive Director, Care Management/Utilization Review
Dr. Joseph A. Borges has a diversified working experience as a healthcare professional in various academic health systems in the New York region. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Saint Louis University, a Medical Diploma from The Autonomous University of Guadalajara, and a Master of Healthcare Administration from Iona College. He has had progressive leadership experience in multiple areas of healthcare delivery. Dr. Borges has worked for The Visiting Nurse Service of New York as a Continuum Care Specialist in the year 2000. Lenox Hill Hospital contracted its Outcomes Management Team to redesign Utilization Management and Case Management. He and some of his team members eventually became Lenox Hospital employees when their contracts expired approximately two years later, in 2002. He assumed the role of Assistant Director of Patient Care Management. At this time, Dr. Borges also obtained a Master's Degree in Health Services Administration at Iona College in 2006. Three years later, Dr. Borges joined the Utilization Management Team at Montefiore Medical Center and managed all campus sites in 2006 as the Assistant Director of Clinical Care Management. That same year he was allowed to develop and implement a new case management program at Westchester Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, as the Director of Case Management. The new program was highly successful, as efficiencies decreased hospital length of stay by 0.5 days. Six months later, he was promoted to Vice President, Clinical Care Management. Additional progressive administrative responsibilities included the following: Acute Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Speech and Audiology, Bed Management, Transfer Center, Aids Care Center, Ambulatory Clinics, and general oversight over the Allied Health Professionals consisting of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. Simultaneously, he became a Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College. Serving as a board member for the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services allowed him to connect with his community. After five years, Dr. Borges decided to join the North Shore-LIJ Health System (Northwell Health) and was based at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2011. As the Senior Administrative Director of Clinical Operations, he was responsible for Case Management, Social Work, and Medicaid Eligibility Unit. Six months later, he also became the administrator of the Ambulatory Care Unit. Approximately three years later, in 2014, Dr. Borges became a subject matter expert for Care Management/Population Health Management for Philips Healthcare. He was the clinical lead for care management redesign projects across the continuum of care for various health systems in North America. He established strong working relationships with client sponsors and became their trusted advisor. In 2017 he crossed the Hudson River to develop a Triad Model as the Executive Director of Care Coordination at University Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center in Newark, New Jersey. This model significantly reduced payer denials and reduced inpatient length of stay. Dr. Borges continues to explore opportunities for professional growth and ways to make a meaningful impact on human-centric healthcare delivery systems.
Welcome

Employee Resource Groups PROMOTING EQUITY
NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi created the Jacobi Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee in 2021. The committee’s focus is to advance racial and social justice by integrating an equity lens into Jacobi’s operations. Specifically, the committee is dedicated to providing staff spaces to foster inclusiveness for employees. When employees feel safe to socially identify, this will impact employee satisfaction and support recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups. Who is JEDI?

WELCOME TO OUR PATHWAY TO PLANETREE
Year in Review
Happy New Year! We want to share some exciting projects and events with you that we hope will raise your spirits and renew your energy! Thanks to our Planetree Steering Committee and key partners from Quality, HR, SW, BH, Medicine, Public Relations and Marketing, and our PFPC, we have identified opportunities that look closely at ways towards achieving the highest standards of safety and quality. The work is built from information gathered by 3 core elements- Staff, Patients, and Community, all of which we will use to illustrate our journey. Our application submission for designation will take place in January 2023 and an on-site assessment will commence in Spring 2023. A Planetree designation is simply an acknowledgment of all the great things we do at Jacobi that makes us proud to be who we are. Here are highlights of some of the projects we have launched in partnership in 2022 with
our collaborative partners: CARING FOR OUR PATIENTS
Jacobi's whiteboard, now named the "Communication Board" project was co-designed by both patient council members and staff and will help build a 2-way communication standard between patients and staff. Patients share their desired goals and personal preferences which will help staff interact with them as individuals rather than by an identity common to HCWs (healthcare workers) such as their “medical condition” (i.e. diabetic patient in Bed 1) Staff provides important info that will help patients understand their care plan more clearly. This will help put our patients at ease so that they are able to relax more and focus on their healing. Proud winners of the Systemwide unit challenge in 2022 for increasing our nurse communication scores by 65%. Congratulations to 5D for their compassionate care and commitment to our patients!
CARING FOR OUR STAFF
Person-centered Leadership training- Middle managers often find themselves “sandwiched” between carrying out directives from their leaders and ensuring staff needs are met so that they can do their jobs. The sessions offered tools that improve communication, build relationships and work toward a resolution. Facilitator training for Connecting to Purpose- Staff will soon provide training for all staff on building communication with empathy and compassion, which will give staff tools to interact with patients, families, and colleagues in a more meaningful way. Caring Culture Survey for Staff- How do we feel about the way we care for each other and our patients, and how we are cared for by others? Results from this survey will take a look at how far we have come since our 2021 survey and what we need to do to stay on track.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | January 2023
Schwartz Rounds- a healing forum facilitated by Jacobi staff and provided for all Jacobi staff with open dialogues around a patient or staff event that may have potentially made staff feel emotionally vulnerable. Emotional reflections are supported and encouraged as this is the intention of our conversations. APEX Rewards and Recognition program - Created and driven by staff, this program has captured the hearts of leaders and staff across the campus! Based on 3 tiers of Bronze, Silver, and Gold, staff may be recognized by any staff member and receive a buck, which can be redeemed from one of our pop-up APEX Swag Shoppe events. Intended to recognize staff who rock at what they do and beyond, our committee will look to possibly incentivize wellness programming, performance improvement projects, and other areas where growth is targeted. The H3 (Helping Healers Heal) program remains steady and strong with progress and growth! Our newly hired Wellness Program Director Lara Mc Davit, LCSW has joined Care Experience to help expand our H3 programming and continue outreach efforts to staff experiencing compassion fatigue, stress, and burnout. Our continued Music, arts, dance, exercise, and relaxation/meditation activities will offer staff additional ways to inspire joy and promote healing. Our H3 members will continue to collaborate with facilities and department leads on creating more healing spaces for staff who are not often able to leave their workspaces due to the needs of our patients. In collaboration with our Wellness committee, members will be looking more closely at the unique needs of the many different department teams and activities that may arise from the discussion s. Stand Up to Violence (SUV) Peace Walk- Starting as the first hospital-based gun violence prevention program in New State, its members address gun violence occurring in our local community consisting of credible messengers, Social Workers, and Behavioral Health professionals. This vital program continues to save countless lives and includes youth mentoring for those at risk of violence in their neighborhoods. This wonderful program is a lifesaver for many and is at the core of what it means to reach out and help our community. Night Out Against Crime- Peaceful walk with participating Jacobi leaders, staff, and NYPD that build on community partnership and promote safety. Back-to-school event- a popular program for all visitors at Jacobi with music and activities for all! Musical Magic-a fun event for patients, families, and staff in partnership with Ronald McDonald House. Many giveaways are to be had by all who attend. CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY
Our Planetree Intranet Page is now live and more program development is underway. Please look out for us and have a safe, healthy, and productive New Year!

Health Benefits of Oatmeal
January is National Oatmeal Month, which is the perfect time of year to choose oatmeal for breakfast. Not only will a piping hot bowl of oatmeal warm you up on an icy morning – you’ll also reap the health benefits that are packed into a bowl of oats. For starters, oatmeal is great for heart health because oats have a special type of fiber called “beta glucan” that helps to reduce cholesterol. Having low cholesterol keeps your arteries healthy and can help prevent heart disease. The fiber in oats can also help control blood sugar by slowing down food digestion and absorption. In fact, research shows that eating more oats can lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Third, the fiber in oats helps to prevent constipation. Plus, diets high in whole grains (like oats) have been shown to lower the risk of colorectal, colon, gastric, pancreatic and esophageal cancers. Be aware, however, that not all oats are created equally. Instant oats can be more processed and higher in salt and sugar. They may not have the same benefits for blood sugar control as less processed oats, like rolled or steel cut. Instant oats can still be a healthy choice, but check the ingredients list first to avoid the sugary, salty versions. And remember that while instant oats might sound more convenient, old-fashioned rolled oats take only five minutes to cook on the stove. One of the best things about eating oatmeal is the variety you get through the different toppings you can add. Mix in your favorite milk, nuts, nut butter, seeds, berries, and fresh or dried fruits for extra flavor and nutrition. Frozen and no-sugar-added canned fruits also work great in oatmeal. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, or other seasonings to spice things up. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even make savory oatmeal with toppings like black beans, sautéed vegetables, onion, garlic, olive oil, or cumin.
Easy Oatmeal Recipe (2 servings) 1 ½ cups of water or milk of your choice 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats ½ tsp of cinnamon ½ tsp of vanilla extract ½-¾ cup frozen blueberries 2 tbsp peanut butter A handful of pumpkin seeds
INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a medium pot or skillet, bring the water or milk to a boil.
2. Add the oats. Reduce heat and cook over a gentle boil until the liquid is completely absorbed. 3. Stir in the cinnamon and vanilla extract. Then add the frozen blueberries. Cook until the blueberries have thawed (about 1 minute). 4. Remove from heat and serve. Add more milk if desired and the peanut butter and pumpkin seeds. 5. Add whatever other toppings you’d like! Try other fresh, frozen, canned, or dried fruit for flavor, plus other nuts and seeds for a hearty crunch.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi has been named a Surgical Quality Partner by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The designation means that Jacobi has met the highest standards of surgical care by minimizing complications, improving outcomes, and saving lives. "Jacobi is widely known in the Bronx as the Level 1 Trauma Center for our region," said CEO, Christopher Mastromano , "What this ACS designation means is that Jacobi is providing the highest possible level of surgical care." Mr. Mastromano congratulated the Jacobi Surgical Department, led by Dr. John McNelis , for their hard work in achieving this distinction. "This is a huge honor for Jacobi," said Dr. McNelis . "This certification identifies Jacobi as one of 25 hospitals internationally and one of only three in New York State that can meet these requirements." ACS measures facilities in how they credential and train their medical staff, measure quality improvements and collect data. Jacobi received special commendations for their Surgical and OB-GYN departments. For more than 100 years, ACS Quality programs have enhanced the care of surgical patients. Participation in these programs shows that a hospital is committed to surgical quality and has met rigorous external standards confirmed by an outside verification process. "ACS Quality programs are grounded in a century of experience and are an important measure of a hospital's surgical quality. As an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi has shown a commitment to three things. We provide the best possible patient care, rigorously evaluating that care, and dedicating themselves to continual self-improvement," said ACS Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer Patricia L. Turner, MD, MBA, FACS. "Being an ACS Surgical Quality Partner means a hospital is truly dedicated to continuous improvement by using data and ACS standards and resources to deliver the best possible care," said Clifford Y. Ko, MD, MS, MSHS, FACS, FASCRS, Director, ACS Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care. NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | January 2023

A study of emergency care involving victims of severe brain trauma is to be performed in this area. NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi is conducting a research study to learn if either of two strategies for monitoring and treating patients with severe traumatic brain injury in the intensive care unit (ICU) is more likely to help them get better. Both of these alternative strategies are used in standard care. It is unknown if one is more effective than the other. In one strategy doctors concentrate on preventing high intracranial pressure caused by a swollen brain. In the other strategy, doctors try to prevent high intracranial pressure and also try to prevent low brain oxygen levels. This study will discover if either strategy is safer and more effective. Because the head injury is a life-threatening condition requiring immediate treatment, some patients will be enrolled without consent if a family member or representative cannot be rapidly available. Before the study starts, we will consult with the community. We welcome your feedback and questions. For more information or to decline participation in this study, please visit boost3trial.org or contact our study staff at (646) 816-3333.

Here's Why It's Never Too Late to Start Exercising
NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | January 2023
Helps prevent or manage some health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes Improves strength, balance and flexibility Increases stamina and energy levels Helps manage weight Reduces stress and improves mood May keep your brain sharper Provides an outlet for socializing Being physically active can help you stay healthier as you age. It can also provide a host of other benefits, from allowing you to do the things you love to do to keep you more independent. Even if you haven’t exercised in the past, it’s never too late to start. Of course, before starting any type of physical activity, you should always check with your doctor first. HERE ARE SOME BENEFITS EXERCISE MAY OFFER OLDER ADULTS: Different types of exercise provide different benefits. Try to incorporate a variety of physical activities into your life, including: Aerobic exercise: Exercises that make you breathe harder and faster are good for your heart, lungs, and circulatory system. Walking is a great aerobic exercise for older adults, but it’s important to find something you enjoy doing – you can dance, play with your grandkids, or garden to get similar benefits. Try to get 150 minutes of aerobic activity weekly. Strengthening exercise: Keeping your muscles strong helps you stay stronger, allows you to maintain independence, and helps prevent osteoporosis. You can lift weights, use resistance bands or pick up everyday objects, like cans of food. Aim to do strengthening exercises twice a week. Balancing exercise: Adding in some balance exercises can help you reduce your risk of falls. Tai chi helps improve balance. So does standing on one foot or walking in a straight line heel-to-toe. Stretching: Staying flexible as you age will help prevent pain and stiffness. It can also improve agility and balance. After warming up your muscles by doing other types of exercise, take a few minutes to gently stretch your arms, shoulders, back and legs. Yoga can also help you maintain flexibility.
