Florence Beatrice PRICE (1887–1953) Organ Works First Sonata • Suite No. 1 Passacaglia and Fugue Tom Winpenny, Organ Florence Price had worked for some years as a silent film organist before she won admiration in 1932 for her Symphony No. 1 in E minor . Works for organ form one of the largest parts of her output; the Sonata attests to her virtuosic command, as does the Passacaglia and Fugue which, while clearly indebted to Bach, reveals personal ideas of her own. Price’s gift for writing miniatures is also obvious – Adoration has heartfelt melodic beauty, and the dainty Caprice exemplifies light music at its best. Variations on a Folksong is a tour-de-force and her only organ work to be based on a pre-existing melody, a spiritual. A digital EP featuring four additional miniatures for organ is also available for streaming and download (9.70389).

Key features: • This release follows on from a number of Mark Fitz-Gerald’s work on Shostakovich’s music for film and theatre, including The Bedbug (Naxos 8.574100), which proved to be ‘a delight’ for Limelight , and The Girlfriends (8.572138), a treasure trove of rarities with no fewer than four world premiere recordings. • Mark Fitz-Gerald is regarded as ‘one of the indispensable Shostakovich interpreters of our time’, with enormously successful performances all over the world. He has made this new recording with the Malmö Opera Orchestra and Chorus , all veterans of numerous recordings for Naxos, including an acclaimed DVD of Puccini’s La Bohème (Naxos 2.110385), and an ‘excellent’ ( Fanfare ) album of works by Faure and Poulenc (8.574570). Shostakovich was known for his fun-loving attitude during his early years as a composer. The colourful incidental music for The Shot – reconstructed by Mark Fitz-Gerald from the original piano scores – vividly evokes the raucous life of experimental youth theatre in Leningrad during the late 1920s. This carefree world had changed dramatically by 1934 when Shostakovich completed his music for The Human Comedy – a work that creates a charming atmosphere of Parisian escapism. Discarded movements from his first opera The Nose form an entire orchestral suite. The programme concludes with Mark Fitz-Gerald’s reconstruction of the March of the Anarchists , transcribed by ear from the film The Vyborg Side . About Mark Fitz-Gerald, Conductor Mark Fitz-Gerald has performed the Trauberg/ Shostakovich classic New Babylon (1929) to great critical acclaim, in particular at the Japanese premiere of the work (opening concert of the Tokyo Summer Festival in 2000) and the Rotterdam Gergiev Festival 2001. With the help of Mrs Irina Shostakovich and Krzystof Meyer he restored the complete score to another Trauberg/ Shostakovich film, Odna (1929), and conducted the world premiere (the first Shostakovich premiere for over twenty years) in Holland and later in Paris, with enormous success. From 1989 to 1993 he was associate conductor of the Orquesta de Porto (Orquesta Classica do Porto, Portugal). He was assistant conductor in Strasbourg both at the Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Opéra du Rhin from 1997 to 2002. In 2012 he made his debut with the London Philharmonic, and gave the Swiss premiere of Debussy’s The Fall of the House of Usher . In 2016 at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival Fitz-Gerald conducted, to wide acclaim, his reconstruction of Mortimer Wilson’s vast 1924 score for the Douglas Fairbanks film The Thief of Bagdad . Still Glides the Stream Contemporary Works for Euphonium and Piano David Childs, Euphonium Christopher Williams, Piano

This programme showcases the euphonium’s warmth, emotive quality and astonishing agility with a vibrant tapestry of contemporary chamber music that amply demonstrates its unique character. From the jazz-inflected grooves of Simon Parkin’s Skunk to meditative reflections such as Einaudi’s renowned evocation of sunsets in Due Tramonti , this collection brings together composers from diverse backgrounds whose works reimagine the sonic potential of this versatile instrument. Whether exploring nostalgia or joy, virtuoso fireworks or serene tranquillity, each piece contributes to a compelling narrative of the euphonium’s modern journey. David Childs is the best ambassador one could imagine for his instrument, and this excellent new album follows on from his work with the Black Dyke Band in Virtuoso (Naxos 8.574683) released in April 2025 and with 4barsrest.com regarding Childs as ‘a performer blessed with the gift of exceptional creative alchemy… Accompanied with equally respectful relevance by Black Dyke Band, it makes for a recording that is the complete, masterful sum of its ingredient parts’. • Key features: • Pianist Christopher Williams has a keen interest in the performance and recording of works by undeservedly neglected composers, culminating in the release of three albums of world premiere recordings by the composer Semyon Barmotin on the Grand Piano label (GP799, GP865 and GP866).

Franz Joseph HAYDN (1732–1809) Piano Trios, Vol. 9 Nos. 17, 18, 20, 34 and 36 Stefan Tarara, Violin • Eun-Sun Hong, Cello Josu de Solaun, Piano Haydn’s Piano Trios were intended for domestic use but the composer was typically inventive in subverting expected norms, bringing striking changes of mood, the use of unusual keys, and rich ornamentation to the supposedly placid world of the trio. Haydn also had a fondness for dance patterns, as his use of the polonaise in this volume shows; and he exploits the technical prowess of his pianist dedicatee, Maria Theresa née Hohenfeld, Dowager Princess Esterházy in Trio No. 20 in B flat major . The Trios are played by the three First Prize winners of the prestigious Enescu Competition (Bucharest, 2014) who bring a fusion of historical insight and Romantic sensibility that offers a fresh perspective on Haydn. Vol. 8 is on 8.574391 played by the Aquinas Piano Trio. Gramophone wrote that ‘These still little-known works are delightful, subtly crafted music, and the Aquinas deliver them with verve, affection and a sense of shared enjoyment.’ • The Oberlin Trio play on Vol. 7 on 8.574385: ‘ Felicity, finesse, and good cheer are hallmarks of these performances, and I, for one, would not be unhappy to have the Oberlin Trio remain onboard to complete the remaining volumes of this survey, however many that may turn out to be’, wrote Fanfare . • Vol. 6 is on 8.574362 played by the Aquinas Piano Trio: ‘I can only say that the Aquinas Piano Trio could not have been a happier choice to take up the reins. … Strongly recommended’ ( Fanfare ). Charles GOUNOD (1818–1893) Romantic Piano, Vol. 3 Piano Works Méditation sur le premier Prélude de J.S. Bach Marche funèbre d’une marionnette Six Romances sans paroles Warren Lee, Piano During his time in Italy and later in Leipzig, Charles Gounod was drawn by the balance of sonic beauty and proportion to be found in the music of Palestrina and J.S. Bach. He developed an innate desire for simple directness as can be heard in the excerpt from the Messe solennelle de Sainte Cécile and the Méditation sur le premier Prélude de J.S. Bach , now better known as Ave Maria . Steinway Artist and award-winning composer and pianist, Warren Lee’s solo recordings for Naxos include Le Bal by Anton Rubinstein (8.574216), considered a ‘praiseworthy performance of such rarely encountered repertoire’ by MusicWeb International , and regarded as being ‘played with wonderful skill filled with rich expression’ in audiotechnique . • Of Lee’s recording of Liszt’s Ungarischer Romanzero (8.573805, Vol. 50 of the Naxos complete edition) Ritmo admired his ‘excellent articulation technique, impeccable control and great musicality creating beautiful stories’, and Lee has also recorded the piano version of Beethoven’s The Creatures of Prometheus on 8.573974. Cristian CARRARA (b. 1977) Voci da Hebron (‘Voices from Hebron’) Opera in one act (2024) Libretto by Sandro Cappelletto (b. 1952) Maria Bagalà, Soprano • Shakèd Bar, Mezzo-soprano David Tricou, Tenor • Jean-Luc Ballestra, Baritone Ensemble della Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Modena Arthur Fagen Cristian Carrara is one of the most original Italian composers of his generation. The opera Voci da Hebron (‘Voices from Hebron’) is set during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Carrara’s expressive depiction of this scenario is one in which fear, anger and incomprehension sit side-by-side with the need for communication, at a time when dialogue is difficult and peace is, at times, a mirage. This land that is home to grief and misunderstanding is also a place in which love can survive and ultimately flourish. This production of Voci da Hebron was staged at the Opéra- Théâtre Metz Métropole and in the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti- Freni Modena in February 2024. • Key features: • ‘In a reduced formation, the Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est, under the baton of conductor Arthur Fagen, knows how to bring out the clear and mysterious sounds of a rich and delicate score, which it would be desirable to hear again in the near future. The audience… gives a warm welcome to a rich and inspiring performance.’ ( Olyrix.com ) • This release follows on from Cristian Carrara ’s The Devil’s Bridge on Naxos 8.579167, an album welcomed in MusicWeb International : ‘Listening to this album has been a real delight. I had not heard any of Carrara’s works before but I sincerely hope that this won’t be the last [disc] of his music that is released.’

Musica Ficta with Bo Holten © Per Morten Abrahamsen

The Treasury Of Danish Song Musica Ficta Bo Holten

This encyclopaedic survey represents Bo Holten and Musica Ficta’s 25-year odyssey to collate and record the magnificent wealth of Danish part-songs. The project began in 1996 to much acclaim – Gramophone wrote: ‘Musica Ficta cannot put a foot wrong’ – and since then they have continued to earn admiration as one of the finest vocal ensembles in Europe. Stretching back to the glories of the Middle Ages and forwards to today’s leading Danish composers, these recordings encompass the Romantic era as well as traditional songs, motets, folk songs, Christmas hymns and carols, children’s songs and the great contributions of Carl Nielsen and Thomas Laub, to form a cornerstone collection of Danish song. Bo Holten established his reputation as a conductor of early music vocal groups, first with Ars Nova which he formed in 1979 and later with Musica Ficta . He has composed over 100 works including symphonies, solo concertos, and works for chorus and orchestra, operas and musicals. • Key features: • On its initial release in 1999 Gramophone wrote of A Danish Christmas (8 554627), ‘This is a lovely disc, of music largely unknown outside of Scandinavia yet which ought to have the broadest possible appeal, especially when performed with such style’. • Musica Ficta and Bo Holten have also recorded much else for Naxos including the Early Music discs by Ockeghem which are ‘rich-textured, and beautifully balanced… superbly sung’ ( Penguin Guide on 8.554260).

7 47313 46867 6

No one redefined the limits of contemporary keyboard writing in the 18th century more radically than Domenico Scarlatti, whose formal innovation, harmonic daring and virtuosic brilliance set him apart from his contemporaries. In this selection of sonatas Martin Cousin presents a multifaceted portrait of Scarlatti’s full creative range. Along with scalic runs, extended trills, dramatic dynamics and playful syncopations, we also meet the impish, quasi-improvisational and introspective composer capable of great nobility and lyrical beauty, one who bridged Baroque traditions with the new Classical style. William Shield rose from relatively humble beginnings to become the ‘house’ composer to Covent Garden, for which he wrote stage works full of panache and tunefulness. He met and befriended Haydn who was to prove a lasting influence. In 1782 Shield published his Six String Quartets, Op. 3 , some of the most richly rewarding works of their type in 18th-century England. The transparency of parts, use of imitation, infusion of Sturm und Drang elements as well as the bucolic and folkloric writing, all demonstrate Shield’s art, as does the progressive writing of the last of the six, in C minor. Friedrich Kiel enjoyed great prestige as a professor of composition in Berlin where his many students included Stanford and Paderewski. As a teacher he remained broadminded and undogmatic. These elegantly poised works show a rather conservative craftsman but one who absorbed the influences of the best of his contemporaries – Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Liszt. The Suite is Beethovenian in style, while his approach in the Six Fugues is largely lyrical. A digital EP of the Six Impromptus is available to stream and download (9.70385).
