Colbert Packaging Certified As A Woman-Owned Business BY SUSAN RILEY Few women were in the packaging business in 1959 when Nancy Col- bert MacDougall’s father founded Colbert Packaging in Kenosha, Wis- consin. But that didn’t make any difference to the late Charles Colbert. He brought Nancy into the independent, family-owned business as soon as she had graduated, and unlike many women who faced barri- ers in their careers in those days, her father embraced her as a leader.

Cascades To Close Niagara Falls Corrugated Operations Kingsey Falls, Quebec base Cascades Inc. announced that its corrugated medium man- ufacturing facility in Niagara Falls, New York will be permanently closed as part of the “op- timization” of their packaging production plat- form. Production will end by September 3. The company said the announcement aligns with its commitment to support stra- tegic growth by focusing on profitability and customer service levels. The Niagara Falls production site has an annual production ca- pacity of 200,000 short tons. A second machine at this facility was closed in 2023. Closure costs are estimated at approximately $5 million. “This is a difficult decision, but one that is an essential part of our focus on optimizing the performance of our Packaging sector,” said Jean-David Tardif, Executive Vice-Pres- ident, Packaging. “The future growth mo- mentum for Cascades and our customers is very promising, and we are well positioned to capitalize on opportunities for strategic and sustainable growth. We know what we need to do to get there — simplify, optimize and fo- cus,” he added.

“He never made me feel as if I was unique in that sense. I was just part of the group,” said Nancy, the company CEO and owner. “He did make me go to the conferences,” she said, noting that she would be one of the only women in attendance. Today, her dedication and forward-thinking has helped Colbert Packaging thrive for decades, and now they have another reason to stand out. Recently, they were certified as a Women’s Business Enter- prise (WBE) through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation’s leading third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women. This certification reinforces the company’s position as an independent, woman-owned, small business as it has been for more than 20 of its 66 years in existence. Nancy said the recognition is a great honor. “We at Colbert Packag- ing are excited about this certification and the meaningful impact it will CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 Nancy Colbert MacDougall, CEO and Owner of Colbert Packaging, at the control panel of their latest investment, a 10-color RMGT printing press.

John Kelley Joins Kento North America As Managing Director

As Managing Director, John’s priorities are clear: “I’m building a North American sales plan that aligns with the needs of converters ready to take their printing capability to the next level. My approach is consultative — I come from the floor, and I understand the challenges our cus- tomers face.” CEO Javier Quesada said that North America is one of Kento’s most strategic markets. “Demand for high-quali- ty printing continues to grow while production batch siz- es shrink,” he said. “The US has more single-pass digital printers than any other country. Converters here are very open to innovation and they’re ready for the hybrid trans- formation.” Javier says Kento already has two machines installed in the US and two more in production, including models featuring the newly developed 66-inch rotary die cutter, designed for the North American standard. “But adoption isn’t just about technology,” he said. “It’s about understanding. That’s why appointing an experi- enced, respected leader like John Kelley is so important. John knows the market, the trends, and, most importantly, the people. “John has not only deep industry knowledge, but also strong values and a global mindset. He understands what’s happening in Europe and how it connects to North Ameri- can trends. That makes him the ideal person to represent Kento and help us grow.” Visit kentodigitalprinting.com .

Kento Hybrid, headquartered in Valencia, Spain, has wel- comed industry veteran John Kelley as its new Managing Director in North America. With more than 45 years of ex- perience in corrugated packaging and a lifelong passion for high-graphics printing and converting, John brings

both strategic insight and deep op- erational knowledge to support its customers, the company said. “I’ve been involved in the cor- rugated industry for ove 45 years,” said John. “I was fortunate to par- ticipate in major innovations like the first chambered doctor blade system and the first vacuum trans- fer system in rotary die cutting de-

cades ago. Since then, I’ve been fully committed to ad- vancing the science of putting ink on corrugated board.” John recalls printing a process image of a Florida or- ange directly on corrugated for the gift fruit industry some 35 years ago. “Even then, I saw high-graphics packaging as a differentiator,” he said. “What attracted me to Kento is the genius of combining the best of analog and digital into one press. This is going to be one of the greatest innova- tions we’ve seen in our industry.”

Manufacturing PMI Contracts In June At 49 Percent

down of manufacturing inventories have eased. Of the six biggest manufacturing industries, four (Petroleum & Coal Products; Computer & Electronic Products; Machinery; and Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products) registered growth,” says Spence. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing sector is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting. “A Manufacturing PMI above 42.3 percent, over a peri- od of time, generally indicates an expansion of the overall economy. As such, the June Manufacturing PMI indicates the overall economy grew for the 62nd straight month af- ter contracting in April 2020. “The past relationship between the Manufacturing PMI and the overall economy indicates that the June reading (49 percent) corresponds to a change of plus-1.9 percent in real gross domestic product (GDP) on an annualized basis,” says Susan Spence, MBA, Chair of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee.

The US manufacturing sector contracted in June for the fourth consecutive month after two months of expansion preceded by 26 months of contraction, according to the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business. “The Manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) registered 49 percent, 0.5 percentage point higher com- pared to the 48.5 percent reported in May. Of the five sub- indexes that directly factor into the Manufacturing PMI, two (Production and Supplier Deliveries) were in expansion ter- ritory, up from one in May. The slowing of supplier deliver- ies eased month over month, with a 1.9-percentage point improvement, indicating that port congestion and a draw-

“ISM’s New Orders Index contracted in June for the fifth consecutive month after three consecutive months of expansion, registering 46.4 percent, a decrease of 1.2 percentage points compared to May’s figure of 47.6 percent. This reading is be- low the 12-month moving average (48.4 percent) for the New Orders Index, which hasn’t indicated consistent growth since a 24-month streak of expansion ended in May 2022. Panelists noted continued weak demand, with a 1-to-1.7 ratio of pos- itive comments to those expressing con- cern about near-term demand. Overall, new orders continue to slow, as which par- ty will pay for potential tariff costs is still the prime issue in negotiations between buyers and sellers,” said Spence. “The seven manufacturing industries reporting growth in new orders in June are: apparel, leather and allied products; petroleum and coal products; furniture and related products; nonmetallic mineral products; miscellaneous manufacturing; food, beverage and tobacco products; and computer and electronic products. The seven industries reporting a decline in new orders in May, in order, are: Pa- per Products; Textile Mills; Transportation Equipment; Chemical Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Machinery; and Fabricated Metal Products. “The Production Index entered ex- pansion territory for the first time in four months in June, registering 50.3 percent, 4.9 percentage points higher than the May reading of 45.4 percent. ings of expansion in January and February, the index was in contraction territory for eight months, with the previous reading above 50 percent in April 2024 (50.7 percent). “Production levels in June, while improved, are still frag- ile as order books remain weak and new orders continue to decline. Panelists noted reduced output in production due to business-climate uncertainty, with a 1-to-1.5 ratio of positive to negative comments,” said Spence. An index above 52.1 percent, over time, is generally consistent with an increase in the Federal Reserve Board’s Industrial Pro- duction figures. “The six industries reporting a decrease in production in June, in order, are: textile mills; paper products; wood products; nonmetallic mineral products; chemical prod- ucts; and food, beverage and tobacco products. “Delivery performance of suppliers to manufacturing or- ganizations was slower for the seventh consecutive month in June, with the Supplier Deliveries Index registering 54.2 percent, a 1.9-percentage point decrease compared to the reading of 56.1 percent reported in May. This index read- ing, which indicates slower but slightly improved delivery performance, indicates the easing of port congestion once the pull-forward demand was largely completed in May. “The findings in June suggest the deliveries continued to be strained because suppliers and panelists’ compa- nies were haggling over who pays for applied tariffs,” said Spence. “A reading below 50 percent indicates faster de- liveries, while a reading above 50 percent indicates slow- er deliveries. The only industry reporting faster supplier deliveries in June is Paper Products. “ISM’s Customers’ Inventories Index registered a read- ing of 46.7 percent in June, an increase of 2.2 percentage points compared to the reading of 44.5 percent in May. “Customers’ inventory levels in June continued to con- tract but moved closer to ‘about right’ territory. Panelists reported that the amounts of their companies’ products in their customers’ inventories continue to suggest a de- mand level that remains positive for future production,” says Spence. “The four industries reporting customers’ inventories as too high in June are: textile mills; paper products; comput- er and electronic products; and transportation equipment. “No industries reported paying decreased prices for raw materials in June. ISM’s Backlog of Orders Index reg- istered 44.3 percent, a decrease of 2.8 percentage points compared to the May reading of 47.1 percent, indicating order backlogs contracted for the 33rd consecutive month after a 27-month period of expansion. “The 12 industries reporting lower backlogs in June are: paper products; nonmetallic mineral products; textile mills; plastics and rubber products; wood products; fabri- cated metal products; primary metals; chemical products; electrical equipment, appliances and components; ma- chinery; transportation equipment; and food, beverage and tobacco products.

ery is expected in later years. Key Findings include: • Depending on the scenario, US packaging consump- tion in 2030 could range from $255.4 billion to $279.6 billion, a swing of over $24 billion driven by tariff-relat- ed uncertainty; • Segments such as rigid plastics and flexible packag- ing, which are heavily reliant on imports, are expected to face the sharpest cost increases, although demand remains resilient due to their essential role in food and healthcare; • Despite economic pressures, healthcare packaging is forecast to grow at 3.1 percent CAGR in the US, while cosmetics packaging benefits from the ‘lipstick effect,’ with consumers maintaining spending on small luxuries • Brands and converters are increasingly adopting a ‘Plus One’ strategy, diversifying their sourcing beyond China to mitigate future trade risks, with Southeast Asia and Latin America emerging as key alternatives. Smithers built three robust scenarios (baseline, pessi- mistic and optimistic) to assess the impact of tariffs on key packaging materials, end-use markets and geographies. Primary and secondary research was built on top of the Smithers in-house database to develop the data for each key scenario. Every step was assessed by the Smithers team of packaging subject matter experts. The core eco- nomic assumptions utilised IMF and USITC data. The paper projects global packaging demand will reach $1.52 trillion by 2030, but warns that growth could slow by up to 0.5 percent un- der pessimistic scenarios. Global packaging demand is set to hit $1.52 tn by 2030, with growth rates of 3.8 percent in the Smithers baseline scenario; it may rise to 3.9 percent in the optimistic scenar- io or drop to 3.3 percent in the pessimistic scenario.
