Judges’ comments The quilts seen at judging were very diverse and of a very high standard. There is a style of quilt here to suit everyone’s taste. There are some fine examples of traditional quilts; pieced, appliqued and embroidered; alongside more contemporary quilts. Quilters who have moved away from the norm have added to the success of this quilt show. Most contemporary techniques were demonstrated, including surface design elements. The quilting overall was of a very high standard with great examples of hand quilting, domestic machine quilting and long arm quilting. We appreciated the humour in some of the pieces and others covered social issues including care of endangered species and International Women’s Day. The Juniors were well represented in number and of a high standard. With the aim of making future shows even better, the judges offer these notes on ways to enhance your quilts. • Make sure bindings are straight, even in width, and full with 90 degree mitred corners. • Judges look for straight and even width sashing. To achieve this, blocks needed squaring up accurately before they are sewn together and care taken not to overdo the machine quilting which may also distort the quilt top. • Match the thread colour to the fabric for both piecing and applique. Similarly, using the same thread colour front and back when machine quilting will help to hide any minor tension issues. • Care can be taken with using dark fabrics next to light fabrics to avoid shadowing (when the dark fabric is seen underneath the light fabric). • Make sure quilts are clean with no loose threads (and pins). Although we have listed suggestions to encourage improvement, we congratulate all the entrants for the high quality and the creativity on display. Our congratulations to the organising committee and their volunteers on a well conducted judging day. Judges Deb Laurie & Karen Mersiades (28/07/2024)
