Tavo Packaging: Taking Risks, Reaping Rewards BY LEN PRAZYCH

Granite Creek Capital Partners Invest In Salem One Chicago, Illinois based Granite Creek Capital Partners LLC, a private investment firm based in Chicago, Illinois announced it has made a new platform investment in Salem One, a leading provider of corporate communication solutions, including direct marketing, packag- ing, and logistics services. Granite Creek partnered with Phil Kelley, Jr., CEO and President of Salem One, and Scott Mahoney, a long-time shareholder and previous Chairman of the company. Addition- ally, Baltimore, Maryland based Patriot Capi- tal co-invested alongside Granite Creek and management. In conjunction with Granite Creek’s invest- ment in Salem One, Granite Creek Partner Bri- an Boorstein and Director Jordan Liss joined its Board of Directors. “Through its broad communication, data, and technology capabilities, Salem One has cultivated long-standing relationships with its customers as their strategic corporate com- munications partner,” said Liss. “The strong skills and forward-looking mindset that Salem One’s management team brings to the printing and packaging indus-

Intense pressure can wreak untold havoc and destroy individuals and companies alike. But it can also forge diamonds. During the Covid ep- idemic when many companies understandably dialed back plans for new equipment expenditures, Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania based Tavo Packaging, installed a new press and two new die cutters — an undeni- able risk that has paid enormous dividends.

“They were delivered sight unseen,” says David Taylor, CEO. “We had trips set up, of course, but those had to be canceled. We were left with the option of standing in place or moving forward. Even with the risk involved, we knew what the right decision was for us.” Growing The Business Tavo is not a company built on maintaining the status quo. The company was founded by Hal Taylor, the father of David and Jeff, Vice President of Operations, in 1978, in Southampton, Pennsylvania. In 1982, Hal purchased the company from his partner and moved into a 13,000-square-foot building in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. As the company expanded with a seven-color gravure printing press on the floor, another 12,000-square-feet was added. Jeff joined the company in 1987 and David joined in 1994, two years before the company moved to its current location in Fairless Hills. In 1997, Tavo opted to move exclusively to the use of flexographic printing, ultimately CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 The Tavo Packaging team, from left, David Taylor, Tom Chwieroth, Stuart Taylor, Jim Gondorecci, Chuck Bauman, David Acosta, and Jeff Taylor.

Victoria started Victorialand in a quest to solve her own personal skincare needs that weren’t being met by the market, but those concerns quickly took a backseat when her son Cyrus was born with a rare hereditary disorder that affects the retina with symptoms that can include vision loss or blindness. Since then, Victoria became determined to offer the visually impaired the same ability to experience and enjoy beauty as her sighted friends. She started to experience the world through her son and realized this world could be a more in- clusive place for the visually impaired. People who are visually impaired crave independence just like everyone else, and with today’s technology and resources, it should be a standard practice that products are packaged in a way that makes them ac- cessible for all. Fred Harrison, Formerly Of Hycorr Machine, Passes Away At 86 In Sarasota, Florida Fred Harrison passed away peacefully on August 6, 2023, at his home in Sarasota, Florida. He entered hospice at the beginning of July and was well cared for and loved until the end. We remember Fred as an adventurer and dreamer who lived life to the fullest. He was a devoted family member and friend and had a positive influence on everyone he knew.

His family is planning a Celebration of Life service on October 7, 2023 in Michigan and will communicate via email more details about that event. If you add your name and email address to this website at forevermissed. com , you'll be included in event detail updates. Fred was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, to Ward and Martha Harrison on July 9, 1937. He graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown in 1956, then went on to get a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the Univer- sity of Tennessee followed by a Master’s at the Institute of Paper Chemistry and later an MBA at the University of Chicago. He married Nan Higdon in 1965 and was married to her for 53 years until she passed in 2019. After graduating from paper chemistry school in 1962, he started work- ing in the paper industry in various management roles. While he was in the paper industry he worked on mechanical inventions as side projects. This led him to pivoting his career toward corrugated packaging in 1980 where he had some ideas of how to make box plants operate more efficiently. He started experimenting with these ideas in the back shop of Arvco Contain- ers in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and deployed his creations in their operations. Soon, his ideas and ambitions grew beyond the scale of the box plant, and he spun this idea factory into its own business that he named Hycorr Machine. Over 30 years, he developed Hycorr into a successful business that supplied rotary die cutters and flexographic printers to the corrugated box industry. He and his wife, Nan, were inducted into the AICC/Paperboard Packag- ing Hall of Fame in 2007 for their work in the industry. Fred’s love of mechanical things also drove his passions in his personal life. At an early age, he was taking things apart to see how they worked. When he was 13, his father bought him an old car to take apart and Fred instead got it running. He started racing cars in his early 20s and continued into his late 30s. After that, he always had cars to restore or work on including many BMWs CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

The press features sidelay-free infeed DriveTron- ic SIS; simultaneous plate changing with SPC; pre-regis- tration and plate identification; simultaneous coating form changes with DriveTronic SFC; and fast anilox roller chang- ing with AniSleeve. Increasing Automation The press also fits into Tavo’s mission of increasing its automation to reduce makereadies and increase produc- tivity. Wherever possible, individual makeready steps on the Rapida are integrated into the automated simultane- ous job changeover process. Washing, for example, runs parallel to the plate and coating form change. CleanTron- ic Synchro possesses two separate washing beams, en- abling impression cylinders and blankets to be washed simultaneously. Alternatively, the washing time can be re- duced by 50 percent if both washing beams are applied to the blanket. With SPC, the time required for plate chang- es is reduced; DriveTronic PlateIdent detects the plates mounted for a new job, takes care of pre-registration, and checks whether the plate is positioned correctly on the press. With the AniSleeve system, anilox roller replace- CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

adding sheetfed capabilities in 2009 and forming capa- bilities in 2015. Tavo runs three shifts, five days a week. The recent addition of the press, a Koenig & Bauer Rapida 145, and two Bobst Mastercut 145 die cutters, increased productivity dramatically and necessitated a recent 78,000-square-foot expansion, which now provides a total of 256,000-square-feet.

Koenig & Bauer first came onto Tavo’s radar from fre- quent interactions at Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) meetings. “We’d interact with the salespeople and the managers of the business. They’re very professional

ment can be handled by a single person and simultane- ously with other processes. “Automation is paramount to growing a company,” said Jeff. “New technology can provide huge boosts to produc- tivity in and of itself. When combined with how difficult it is to find operators, even those with little to no experience, it’s an absolute necessity.

“We have a full-time recruiter on our payroll because we’ve had to become much more aggressive with building our workforce. There’s a new sense of urgency when it comes to hiring as there is with strengthening our current workforce. We want to give every opportunity for our em- ployees to move up in the company from within.” “It’s also more incumbent on us to increasingly strive to improve our communication with employees,” David add- ed. “It’s not enough to tell workers to get things done; you need to be able to explain why you are asking things to be done in a certain way. The work environment needs to be collaborative, a free exchange of ideas.” The Mastercut die cutters also play into the company’s dedication to automation. The fully automated machines handle sheets up to 1,450 x 1,050 mm at speeds up to 9,500 sheets per hour and offer cutting, stripping, blank- ing in one go. The die cutters also feature cut-to-print reg- ister for precise die-cutting that the manufacturer says will perfectly cut, strip and blank even delicate or light mate- rials. Scrap Collection The facility expansion at Tavo Packaging required the relocation and modernization of the scrap collection system. Nearby Souderton, Pennsylvania based AES – Advanced Equipment Sales – provided a cutting-edge, turnkey solution by implementing a state-of-the-art scrap collection, baling and dust handling system, which was de- signed to work in sync with Tavo’s optimized production workflows and meet their goals for efficiency, safety, and compliance. One of the early project milestones was to clear exist-

ing floor space for installation of the new high-speed pro- duction equipment. This necessitated the relocation of the scrap collection and baling system to a newly constructed baling room near the facility's loading docks, which mini- mized transportation of finished bales. AES worked close- ly with Tavo and their construction management team to seamlessly transition from the old scrap system to the new system with no loss of production time. A key objective of the facility expansion was to replace

the unsightly, outdated roof-top cyclones with below-roof material sep- arators. The new system incorporated three AES AirSharkTM material sep- arators to deliver scrap to the balers. The high air and mate- rial handling capacity of the AirShark separators effectively managed the increased scrap volume

The system is controlled via a large color touch screen operator interface. Proprietary SMART electrical controls, PLC programming, and effective use of VFD motor con- trols were integrated to manage large motor energy con- sumption and eliminate negative air conditions inside of the facility. Overall, the implementation of the new scrap collection, baling, and dust handling system brought about signifi- cant improvements in capacity, energy efficiency, safety, CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

while significantly improving the cleanliness and overall appearance of the building. To maximize the value of the baled scrap paper, several diverter valves were installed to facilitate paper grade segregation. AES added a new

and cleanliness, while meeting TAVO’s goals for increased production and NFPA compliance. Being Intentional Both David and Jeff Taylor stress the importance of in- tentionality in business, particularly when analyzing mar- kets to pursue. “We are very strong in the quick-serve restaurant space and you don’t get into that segment of the food service industry unless you’re very intentional about it,” said David. “If you try to do everything for everyone, no one is going to be happy. We are not going to compete with a company that’s brilliant with cosmetic and pharmaceutical packaging, and by the same token, if that company tried to compete with us in the quick-serve space, they’d be mis- erable. They’re not built for it. To meet the requirements of the quick-serve market you need the capacity to carry a lot of inventory, which is a big commitment. The reason we were able to grow the way in which we have is by focus- ing on a particular segment and putting all our weight and effort behind it. It’s very difficult to be a jack of all trades.”

Just before Covid hit, Tavo had also committed to ex- panding its warehouse to accommodate its increased in- ventory. The Taylors are grateful they made the decision to move forward when they did; they pre-purchased the steel right before the pandemic disrupted so much of the supply chain. “We were probably the only construction site in the United States with material,” said Jeff. David said they are so glad they were able to pay this tribute to their father before he passed away only months later.
