This month, our nation celebrates the innumerable accomplishments, contributions, and innovations made by women throughout history. From pioneers like Sandra Day O’Connor to every brave soul that dared to march for the right to vote, women have helped shape this nation and its laws. They did this despite — or often in spite of — discrimination, inequality, and outright hostility. That’s why this Women’s HistoryMonth, I’d like to recognize someone who’s helped move the needle one step closer to gender equality here in our own community: Criminal District Attorney Sharen Wilson. the end of the day, defenders and prosecutors are both there to ensure the letter of the law is upheld. This perspective means that in many cases, there’s plenty of room for the two to work together to do a lot of good. In a past edition of this newsletter, we mentioned how a long- time client of mine was finally released from prison after a wrongful conviction in 1999. This release simply would not have been possible without DA Wilson’s initiative to investigate wrongful convictions and ensure that innocent people weren’t serving time. In a world of conviction-happy prosecutors, it is refreshing that Wilson takes the full scope of her job into account. Watching my client walk free, I knew our DA was truly committed to the constitution. So, as we recognize the accomplishments and contributions of women this month, let’s remember to not only celebrate well- known historical figures, but also members of our own community. Sharen Wilson has made an incredibly positive impact on this county far beyond the

In 2014, Wilson became the first woman to ever be elected DA in Tarrant County. While it’s unfortunate that it took so long for this important milestone to be reached, Wilson has more than proved the naysayers wrong. Having begun her second term in office, it’s clear that she’s more than capable of meeting the demands of the position. Of course, I’m not surprised. Wilson and I met back in law school, and even then I could tell she was destined for great things. At a time when there wasn’t as even
accomplishment of being the first woman to hold the office. Her integrity, intelligence, and dedication should be an inspiration to anyone who aspires to work in the law.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR DIGITAL HOME ASSISTANT
What you can do, however, is make use of what you already have. Here are some ways to put your digital assistants to work without committing to a connected home. Both the Echo and the Home make excellent communication hubs. In the home, they can be used as a local intercom system. Do you have a few Echo Dots or Google Home Minis? If you do, you’re set. You can communicate in any room where another device is present. Your digital assistant can also make outgoing calls. As long as the device has access to your contacts (or the person you’re trying to contact has an Echo or Home), you can easily make the connection. Want to send a text message? No problem! You can dictate a text to anyone in your smartphone’s contact list and send it without ever touching your phone. Aside from communications, the assistants can handle calendars, appointments, emails, and more. You can ask for information relevant to you, like “When is my flight again?” Google Home can recognize your voice, or the voice of anyone in the house, and respond accordingly. There’s no worry that anyone’s calendar or appointments will be mixed up with yours.
More and more people are welcoming in the Amazon Echo or the Google Home into their spaces. Everyone knows they make great Bluetooth speakers and can tell you the weather forecast, but they’re also capable of so much more. Digital assistants can do a variety of tasks depending on how much you want them to do for you. For example, if you want your digital assistant to be heavily involved in your daily life, you can use the Echo or the Home as the core of your “connected home.” You can connect numerous compatible devices to these assistants, including other Bluetooth or networked speakers, lights, thermostats, coffee makers, refrigerators, and even microwaves. Of course, therein lies the challenge — you must have compatible devices to make a connected home efficient. And let’s be honest: Many of us aren’t going to buy a connected fridge or Wi-Fi enabled lightbulbs just to get the most out of our digital assistants. At the Medlin Law Firm, we believe in results. Beet, Mint, and Ricotta HUMMUS

Ingredients

1 6-ounce beet (about the size of an adult fist), scrubbed 1 15 1/2-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed and drained

1 teaspoon kosher salt, or more to taste 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
•

1/3 cup tahini, well-mixed
•
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
•
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
•
1/4 cup ricotta cheese
•
1 garlic clove, grated
•
Mint leaves, poppy seeds, and olive oil, for garnish
Directions
4. Once beet is cool enough to handle, use a paper towel to remove beet skin. Trim root end and cut into small pieces. Add to blender or food processor, and blend until entire mixture is smooth. Add additional salt if desired. 5. Transfer to a shallow bowl, top with garnishes, and serve.
