THE KING’S BUSINESS

O f these, some were forced to become Mohammedans. Those who refused, were all killed, and pretty women and pretty girls were taken as captives. About 15,000 people took shelter at our Presbyterian Mission station, and about 5,000 more at the Catholic Mission. All this multitude was fed for six months by our Mission, at the rate o f one loaf o f bread for a person, for a whole day. All the rooms and yards at the Mission were crowded, 100 or more per sons in one room—there was no place for a perspn to stretch his feet. On account o f the people being so crowded, sickness started among them, the main sickness being typhoid- fever and dysentery. Many, people died—an average o f 30 died each day. About 12,000 persons died from sick ness, and 3,000 were killecl and butchered. About 95%, o f our women from seven years and up, were betrayed. At one time there were 300. patients under my care; I took care o f them for 25 days, and then I took sick with typhoid myself, ind was laid up in bed for 45 days. No one thought.I would live, but God was merciful to me and spared my life, m order that I may serve Him better in the future. Glory be to H is holy name. I f it were not for our missionaries, there would not be one Chris tian left alive. The good they did for our nation cannot be described with the mortal tongue. God Himself may reward

them according to His great pleasure. During these six months that we were shut in the Mission station, our lives were in danger. . One day the Turks took out 100 men by force from the Catholic Mis sion. Forty o f them escaped, and the other 60 were taken out in the field and shot, and their skulls crushed. They did the same thing a few days later, with 70 other men at another village. When, the Russians came back, the people cried with joy and rushed into the streets. They gave orders for all to return to their villages. The streets and the yards and the roofs o f the houses, had ibecome like jungles, and not a door nor a window was left, having been all carried away with their frames. We found that everything was gone from the houses, even to the broom, and heavy, arti cles, like jugs, were broken to pieces on the floor. W e are. now sitting on the earthen floor with nothing to put under us or over us. Everything I had is gone; I feel worse about my library, and the beau tiful Bible you sent me. They had even looted our churches and destroyed all our sacred books. Great numbers o f people are dying from want o f bread. Money is very scarce in the whole country. America is now the only safe place to live in the whole world. I wish I was there at this very moment, where everything is plentiful.
