THE KING’S BUSINESS THE WAR AND THE JEW AN INTERESTING WORK

404

O NE OF the most interesting questions to the Bible student, and to all inter ested in the Jew in connection with the present war is, what part is the Jew playing in the war, and what will be the result upon the Jews as a people? Much has been written on this subject in both religious and secular periodicals. The most inter esting thing that we have seen upon the whole matter is a book o f ninety-eight pages by Rev. S. B. Rohold, F. R. G. S., published by The Macmillan Company o f Canada, Limited, Toronto, Can., at 30 .cents net. W e give below a few excerpts from its pages. When it reached us we sat down and read it through at a single sitting. This will indicate the interest that we took in the book: GREAT* BR ITAIN “W e find that when the German Chan cellor lost his temper and declared that treaties were mere scraps o f paper, he was speaking to Sir E.' Goshen, G. C. B., Brit ish Ambassador to Germany. His father was a poor Polish Jew, who came over to London, England, and 'who tells us that he wanted to become a clerk in a bank, but they would not take him because his hand writing was bad. He sought to become a partner in the bank, but he had no money, so he opened a bank himself. He became Viscount Goshen, member o f the Privy Council, and at one time- First Lord of the Admiralty, and his son as the repre sentative o f the’ Great British Empire at the German Court, had to stand up for the honor o f Great Britain, and he did it to the utmost satisfaction o f his sovereign and country. “The number o f Jews in the British Isles, according to the Jewish World o f Septem ber 29, 1915, is 245,000, and the Jewish sen ior Chaplain tells us that 16,000 Jews have joined the ranks and have amazed every one by their valour, resourcefulness, and heroism, while hundreds have secured'med als, three o f them having secured the most

coveted honor, that o f the Victoria Cross. W e find that five o f them are holding posi tions in the British Cabinet. One has become Lord Chief Justice, five are in the House o f Lords, six are Privy Councillors, sixteen are Baronets, fourteen are Knights, and there are eighteen members o f Parlia ment. To keep Ireland in order they had to put a Jew, Sir Matthew Nathan, in as secretary. A handful of Jews—yet monop olize such .important governmental posi tions! Is this the Jew who is not wanted? Evidently the leading authorities in Great Britain delight to praise and flatter him. FRANCE. |“The total Jewish population o f France is a little over 100,000. Before the war, in the regular army there were eight gen erals, fourteen colonels, twenty-one lieu tenants, sixty-eight majors, and 107 cap tains ; but now over 10,000 are in thé ranks, and are doing gallant work on land, sea, and air. General Heymans is in charge o f one Army Corps. Five Jews are holding important positions in the Cabinet. The Rothschilds of France, feeling that their country has been outraged, and tq record their patriotism, have returned to the Aus trian Emperor the title o f nobility which his ancestor, a century ago, had bestowed upon them. BELGIUM “This heroic little nation that has suf fered, and is suffering, so much from the ravages o f this war, shelters 15,000 Jews, where they were emancipated in 1815. The relation o f Belgium to Great Britain at this time is o f utmost importance; in fact, it means life and death to her. The future o f Belgium depends on the allies, and she needs at this time the best possible man to represent her in Great Britain—a man who is not only loyal and has an absolute love for his country, but a strong man with brains and character. And the man the King o f the Belgians chose as his Ambas sador to the Court o f St. James, London,
