THE KING’S BUSINESS

tion o f confidence, trust and honor bestowed upon a Jew, has been galling to the anti-semites. But this Jew, who is not wanted, is most desirable now. Iron crosses have been lavished galore on the German Jewish soldiers. The latest record brings it up to ,3,167 Iron Crosses........ RUSSIA “ It is here that the burning-bush is blaz ing with the utmost intensity o f pain, and apparently without the slightest hope o f deliverance. Since 1881, when the new May Laws came into force, with the endeavor - o f the Russian authorities to interpret rigidly their meaning and carry them out to the very letter, they expelled the poor Jews from all villages and holy cities, thus over-crowding the already over crowded Jewish Ghettos within the Pale Settlement. When all the universities and schools for higher education were closed to the Jew; when shame and degredation were imposed on the Jewish manhood and womanhood o f dark Russia, the Jew real ized the hopelessness o f his existence and thought that he could have himself by tak-' ing hold ,of a straw. The large-hearted millionaire, Baron de Hirsh, laid on ’the altar his'whole fortune o f 15,000,000 pounds to transplant the Jewish people from Rus sia to a place o f safety, and other Jewish philanthropists united with him in this newly-found hope. Their efforts were so successful that in twelve years (1899-1913) they stimulated an emigration to America alone o f 1,347,599 Jews; and at least 500,- 000 settled in Great Britain, Palestine, and many parts o f Europe.. . . “ The Russian Jew has proved that there is a loyalty and a love for a native country which surpasses all other considerations, and no personal barrier, however dark it may be, can come between them and their native home. , Not only have the Jews who live in Russia shown their undoubted, loy alty, but Russian Jews living in England, America, and other parts o f the Continent,

went back to fight for Russia. This was a thing that even Jewish leaders did not expect, and none o f the Jewish thinkers could give a reason for this loyalty. The- only thing they told us was this, that patrio tism and loyalty know no bounds. “ Now what do we see? The 350,000 Russian Jewish soldiers are not only girded and warring, but their heroism, unselfish ness, resourcefulness, and actual leadership when emergencies occurred on the very bat tlefield, called out the praises o f the Grand Duke, the Commanderrin-Chief o f the Rus sian armies, who tells us, that they do not stand a whit behind the best o f the Rus sian veteran regiments. Literally hundreds secured the highest award for bravery, viz., that o f the St. George’s Cross. So many have bravely laid down their lives, that some o f the leading Jew-haters have pro fessed conversion. And the agitation went so high in their favor, that we read in The Globe o f October 1, 1915, that a Jew has been actually elected a state councillor o f the Russian Empire, in the person o f M. W einstein.. .. NET RE SU LT S - “This is a brief, conservative restrospect o f the Jewish position, the role he is play ing in this fiercest o f all struggles in the world’s history. What will the Jew get in return for all his services, for his loy alty, and for his noble sacrifices? What compensation will be made to the Jew for all his losses o f lives and properties? Brit ain and her allies pledged their honor, to make good to poor Belgium all her losses, as far as compensation could be made to a nation which suffered so much! But what about the Jews? Three millions have actually become beggars. The forty Jewish colonies have been devastated. Five hundred thousand have been slain. In addi tion hundreds o f thousands have lost busi ness, properties, etc. Have any o f the nations promised redress? Not a word about it !”
